I was told that CMO plans to expand the database to WW2. Is there already a (rough) ETA when this might happen?

When it's ready .

So far I think it's at idea stage. But i'd be willing to pay decent amount for that expnasion. Just that making sort of new dogfight logic might be a beast.

ETA? There's been no news since the devs said they were considering it.

WW II expansion was mentioned some time ago, but I think they consider MP first.

JUst want to point out that is a fan video. Not an official dev-built video. That will avoid the next question.

This is understandable in the video .. how it is understandable that written SOMEDAY at the end.

JUst want to point out that all my videos are checked, judged and finally approved for publication by the Command Modern Operations CEO devs,Slitherine Group and Matrix Games

Also, I thought that it was not simply a matter of expanding the DB to include WWII, but they need to do a certain amount of programming to account for WWII technology (although I forget what exactly...)?

I think some of the main issues were around gunnery control, armor, and a few other things. Thats all from a foggy memory of a few posts.

There are ways to simulate WW2 combat within Command as the Database exists. It's going to be late war or very early Cold War. But I am not sure the sim is meant for that right now. I would suggest players create some personal scenarios to try out WW2 era systems. I have, and found out that while it can be done, it's really not that interesting. The range of weapons and sensors are so short that air and naval combat resembles Command land combat. I think the map system would have to be far less global and converted to a scenario based regional projection of the battlefield. I grew up on WW2 wargaming, so I understand the desire for it within Command. But I also understand how the developers might consider WW2 an entirely new game.

Not sure I understand this. Why would you need any map conversion? CMO has dozens of smaller limited scale and scope scenarios with relatively small battle spaces. Why is WW2 any different than something like First Contact in 1957 that is already a pretty limited scenario?

Hi some of the issues needed to be considered would be visual signaling, ship formations, dive and skip bombing, armour ratings the list goes on :)

Sub behavior would also be an issue. If memory serves, all diesel subs are currently assumed to have snorkels, when only the last of the German U-boats did in WWII.

Regardless of what the current status might be, I think it would be nice to get some kind of statement about future plans, if not timing. I don't recall seeing any mention of WWII on this forum since this game was initially announced. If the plans have been dropped, so be it, but would be nice to know.

Don't get me wrong, the current map works for WW2. I was just thinking there might be room to optimize the map system for the shorter engagement ranges of that era since WW2 is very very popular. If it would take a lot of development time, it's probably not worth it. Just floating the idea since the map is an important part of gameplay experience. The WW2 scenarios I created just didn't feel right on the global map. But again, suggest players create WW2 battles to get a sense for the gameplay and provide feedback.

It would be great to see this particular aspect fixed in the short term, as I think many WW2 ASW scenarios would be practical after that change. The type VII and IX U-boats are already in the Cold War DB, as well as many Allied destroyer types. (Not sure about the aircraft.)

I am curious about this..."It would be great to see this particular aspect fixed in the short term". I don't think there is anything to fix. I can't, off the top of my head, think of a post-WW2 sub that didn't have a snorkel. Maybe some of the mini-subs from NK.

Here is part of the official response as to what would still need to be modeled for WW2.

In my opinion, CMO in WWII does not make any sense with the present WVR air combat or ground warfare mechanics. It would be a loss of develpment time. I would prefer MP (even Wego would work for me) and a mission editor instead.

No offense intended by the use of the word 'fix,' of course. But damaged or inoperable snorkels were sometimes a factor in post-WW2 submarine operations (I think one or two incidents briefly mentioned in "Blind Man's Bluff"). If snorkel damage/inoperability were modeled in CMO-- with corresponding behavior changes--it wouldn't be such a stretch to have a sub with no snorkel at all, right? (At least compared to the systems modelling required for some of the other WW2 features on the wishlist.) But perhaps there are some complexities I'm missing.

Right now I'm not sure if snorkel damage is modeled at all-- I don't think it's possible to damage the snorkel from Lua, anyway (or if so, I wasn't able to find the corresponding component for it).

Understand what you're saying and don't know what kind of fidelity there is for snorkels.

But this part of you statement made me think you were specifically referencing WW2..."I think many WW2 ASW scenarios"

To be honest, personally I'm more interested about that rumored Vietnam-themed DLC.

Of course, if WWII-related changes to the game engine will benefit the modern ops as well (*), why not, but I'm not seeing the WWII being too fitting into CMO's scope. But that's just my opinion.

(*) In particular, I'd expect some benefits to simulation of very asymmetric scenarios, with outdated tech utilized in more or less today's environment.

You make some good videos and scenarios.

Already excited for Command WW2.
