Try to keep the speeds in your CV TFs uniform so not too many ships are slowed down, especially way down.

Ok I'll explain some of the Japanese OOB changes in RA for those who dont know, since its relevant to the future of my campaigns.

Land OOB

IJA OOB is essentially unchanged from vanilla with some small adjustments made to troops in china. The main changes are in regards to IJN ground, Naval and air units of which Land will be discussed first. The Japanese get around 12-15 (I would need to check the exact number) of coastal defense Batteries which are largely similar to the one posted above with some minor variations. These units are essentially upgrades SNLF guard units with beefed up fire power and some engineers. Second major change is the addition of Naval assualt Divisions which are essentially 3 SNLF units combined with added engineers, arty and light tanks. These units make taking places like Ambon and Tarkan much easier and usually only require a single Assault Division to be taken. third major change is the addition of Naval Pioneer Regiments which have around 30 engineers and 4 tractors along with 10 AV for base defense. These added engineer regiments make building bases in the SW pacific and elsewhere much easier.

Naval OOB changes

This is where the meat of the changes are so ill start from destroyers and move up the food chain.

Destroyers

4 Akizuki class DDs start with the Kido Butai on day one, 8 additional Akizuki class ships are scheduled, and 10 Yugomo class DDs are swapped for Akizuki Class in the build queue.

The later tachibana and Matsu Class get an upgrade gaining 2x2 10cm DP guns, better light AA and improved Torpedo armament.

all DDs start with depth charges (fubuuki and better start with type 95 mod-2).

25 old Mutsuki and Miomi class DDs are converted to long range escorts (5k endurance, type 95 mod2)at the expense of speed and primary armament. I'm using these ships to escort my tankers and they have done a fantastic job.

Cruisers

The Agano class light cruiser sees a major upgrade gaining three 155mm guns for a total of nine, gaining twelve 10cm AA guns, its 4x2 torpedo launchers are made center line, and gaining radar right out of the docks. I believe it also gained some durability.
furthermore deployment is significantly sped up with the first 2 already serving with the Kido butai as of this date.

the Oyoodo is simply an Agano in this scenario making the total Light cruisers of this class six.

In terms of Heavy cruisers japan gets four more Tone Class with the first two in late 42 and the second pair in mid 44. the durability of the Tone is slightly buffed as well.

2 Kawachi Class command cruisers are added to the OOB arriving in early 43. They are similar to the Kongo Class with nine 14" guns and identical armour to the Kongos, 33 knot speed, with the addition of radar and better AA.

Carriers

The construction of six Shokaku Kai (basically improved Shokaku class) are authorized with Taiho and Shinano cut. Deployment of the carriers is much faster than the historical Unryu class with the first one coming online in August of 42 and the last one arriving in mid 44. the Shokau kai have 75 deckspace, and better AA as their main advantages, along with radar.

In terms of light carriers the japanese standardize on the Aso class CVL with 36 deck space, 36 torpedoes and 29 knot speed. I get around 4 of these throughout the game along with a unique CVL the Ryhou (26 knot speed 36 deck space perfect companion with Junyo and Hiyo) and CVL Nishin (a converted floatplane cruiser) that arrives 20 ish days after Pearl Harbour with radar.
in Addition CVL Shoho is already finished by the start of the scenario and participates in the Pearl Harbour attacks.
several APs are convertable to CVEs which are 23 knot 26 deckspace carriers.

Also all starting carriers are filled to full capacity by their air wings.

The deckspace of a few carriers are modified with Hiryu losing 2 deckspace (71-69), Akagi gaining 3 deckspace (72-75), and ryujo losing 9 deckspace.

Air OOB changes

Addition of the 9th air army at game start with 2 groups of A5M, G3M,H6k1, Alf. The float planes are in groups of 12 and the land based planes in groups of 36. in addition all frontline Navy units start equipped with modern planes (eg zeros, B5N2, ect)
Another group of L3Y2 Navy transports was also added and starts at Pelieu along with Paratroopers.

The largest single change is to pilot training, IJN replacement pilots start at 50 EXP average compared to 30..... training of pilots will thus be pretty quick by vanilla standards. This is at the cost of reduced EXP in existing and future reinforcement units.

Ok in terms of Naval acceleration, right now I have halted the Musashi which I might end up building later, and used the resulting change to accelerate Two carriers. My choice of carriers was the Hiyo and the Taikaku, as this should ensure that Hiyo arrives around April 9th (its date of commission is already sped up in this mod) and the taikaku which is the second Shokaku Kai will arrive around the same time the Kaimon does. Thus I should Have 2 Shokaku kai class carriers arriving in mid August. With a total of 10 fleet carriers by August I expect to have carrier superiority into 44 assuming I don't make any big mistakes. The hornet arrived yesterday So from now on I will operate my Carrier divisions together to ensure that I will always have a numbers advantage and not be defeated in detail. I had a very lucky carrier encounter early in the campaign around the Aleutians where my 2 Shokaku class carriers launched an attack on the Saratoga outside American range and landed 4 bomb hits which caused a Fuel main explosion. The resulting fireball consumed the Saratoga and she was lost with most of her air craft. However I was forced to retire and not hunt her companion ship the yorktown due to being low on fuel and Ammo.

You mention the naval changes for your forces but do the opposing forces stand pat or does he get some enhancements to counter your additions?

Yes the allies get enhanced reinforcements of both air craft and ships to counter balance some of the Japanese buffs , however they do not gain any additional fleet carriers, nor do the essex carriers arrive any earlier. Ill do another post detailing allied changes.

Im having a really hard time killing these encirlced chinese troops in the forest rough terrain up north. I am wondering if i should just bypass them and ignore them and go siege Sian instead.

Subs sinks a cargo ship off Coloumbo which is loaded with troops heading towards Columbo, might be reinforcements, good thing I have Kido Butai right off Columbo to intercept.

OK I've been focusing on the india/Burma campaign for the most part while neglecting to talk about what im doing elsewhere. This has been mainly due to a general lack of action in other fronts, but I think its high time I give a better over view of the overall perimeter defense. I'll start with the SW pacific and then move counter clockwise up to the Marshals and then the Aleutians, before ending with my defense of the SRA.

I have 2 groups of 27 Zeros and 1 group of 36 zeros and 72 betties defending the region along with some recon assets. Naval forces consist mainly of the 4 CAs of the Furutaka and Aoba Class, 8 DDs and 2 CLs based out of Truk.

Central pacific

I have a squadron of 27 Betties on naval search and around 18 H6ks providing recon.
I have no real naval TFs in the area. I plan to send the next batch of SNLF guards in 19 days to this area to defend the four forward bases of interest. Extra SNLF units will go the SW Pacific area.

I almost forgot to mention wake island which is defended by 2 SNLF guards and a Construction unit building forts. An AV is also present to fly H8K search planes.

heres the defense of the North pacific which current has a TF of 5 CLs and 4 DDs assigned to protect resupply. Once the air fields are more built up ill send some fighters as well. 5 subs are assigned to patrol near Kodiak and Cold bay.

The southern offensive in China aimed at Cutting off Changsha also begins today with 120k troops marching towards Hengyang. They are backed up by 126 G4Ms, 54 Ki27s, 36 Zeros, over 100 K-43s, and 60 Single engine bombers. This should be enough to seriously hamper Chinese mobility and cause some serious fatigue and disruption to Chinese units. Ill post more on this in a bit.

March 19th

Today the last of the BBs was finished off near Cochin. Its taken around 35 bombs and 4 torpedos to kill her, but she is finally dead. A wreath will be dropped on the site of her demise on the following day commemorating the bravery of her crew and the air men who died bringing her down. By the time she was sunk her AA capabilities had been reduced from 800 ish down to a pitiful 178..... truly a testament to the death by a hundred cuts she recieved.

I'm starting to run out of Ammo, so im going to conduct one final port strike on ships anchored in Goa (likely due to their damage) and then retire south to Sinapore to replenish my air groups and rearm. The Akagi, Kaga, Junyo and Nishin, who were formerly defending landings at islands west of Java will protect landings in South India while Carrier Division 2 and 3 rearm.

I mentioned I would talk more about china and here is a picture. The reason Im going a northern route near Ichang is due to both minimal Chinese troop concentrations, and due to sizable troop concentrations not shown on the map currently that are known to be guarding the good road north of Changsha. All combat in this area is difficult due to bad terrain and stacking limits, so im trying to avoid it as much as possible and out maneuver him hopefully.

I'll give a brief overview of my future carrier divisions for reference when I'm taking about them.

Carrier Division 1: Akagi, Kaga, Ryoujo

Carrier Division 2: Hiryu, Soryu, Zhou

carrier Division 3 Shokaku, Zuikaku, Shoho

Carrier Division 4 Junyo, Hiyo, Nishin (eventually will be replace by Ryhou, also Junyo is currently part of carrier division 1 until Hiyo arrives)

Carrier Division 5 Kaimon, Taikaku, Nishin (these are the new Shokaku kai class carriers that will arrive in August)

each carrier TF has 2 CV, 1 CVL, 2 BB/CA, 1 CL, and 4-8 DDs ideally of the Akizuki class.

The Hosho, and Taiyo are currently in a TF together armed entirely with fighters for invasion protection. It was Hosho and Taiyo's fighters that shot down 20 allied planes yesterday in Ceylon. I have a few APs i can convert to taiyo class carriers along with a single purpose built CVE in the build queue which will get added to this carrier TF.

hmmmm I recently saw a battleship at Perth, but its now gone. I get the feeling that now that Dean knows were my carriers are, that hes gonna try to raid me either in the SW pacific or the Aleutians. considering that I know that his carriers are based out of Melbourne the most likely target is the Pacific SW. Im gonna hold off any ship heading towards there for a bit at least until his carriers show their face. I have pretty good Nav search in the area, along with 90 G4M/G3M and 90 ish Zeros. hopefully thats enough.

He already raided the marshal's about a month ago and got literally nothing, only scoring a single non fatal bomb hit on a sub.... I doubt he will try that again any time soon.

Also Port Eoresby is being reconed every day by several allied planes. In fact its the only place on the entire map where he is using his recon to scout bases, so I get the feeling he wants to strike in that area.

March 22nd

Not a ton to report today, A sub launched at at one of my Cruiser Mine layers heading to Russel Island and missed. I already have mine tenders stationed at Russel and Rabaul to service the mine fields there. Troops are getting ready to land at Cochin, ill send a picture next turn when my transports are almost in position.

Other than that normal air attacks in china plaster retreating Chinese troops.

the most interesting thing that occurring is the spotting of a convoy heading north from Perth containing 4-5 CLs. I suspect that it contains reinforcements from Australia trying to get to India. I have Carrier Division 1 on an intercept course to hopefully nip the problem in the bud.

In india some troops retreating from Dacca got rolled over by tanks

Chittagong reaches Level 2 Aiport, so sweeps will begin tommorow, no ground combat this turn, as troops are chasing after the chinese and Indian troops.
Next turn should be more spicy tho.

I spotted two cargo ships near Ceylon today as well, so im going to go investigate with Carrier division 3 while carrier division 2 continues to head for home.
