Today a sweep of Madras didn't go well for me. I'll hold off sweeping for the time being.

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 37 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes

Allied aircraft

F4F-3 Wildcat x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 7 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-39D Airacobra: 2 destroyed
P-400 Airacobra: 1 destroyed

In the SW pacific 11 bombers located the Hornet and put a final torpedo in her, sinking her outright. Enterprise is heavily damaged and will be out of action for at least 4 months, and formidable was hit by 2 torpedos two weeks ago.Yorktown was hit by a torpedo during dean's last sortie into the Rabual area but is probably fixed by now. Right now the only operational carriers that dean has left is the Hermes, possibly yorktown and the CVL Charlotte.... After this debacle I doubt dean is gonna try and raid here again, and I doubt hes gonna try and launch any large amphibious operations any time soon. Some LCUs I had headed to the area will be diverted to India.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Cooktown at 94,137

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

No Allied losses

Allied Ships
CV Hornet, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Mugford
DD Ralph Talbot

In south India Dean is on the attack despite only having similar force ratios to what I have. He hasn't concentrated his forces either so I wonder how he intends to make any progress. The vanguard of his attack is a armoured Brigade that got smashed today.

Enterprise has escaped with her life but wont be coming back anytime soon. Since I don't have much to fear regarding the allied carrier force I am going to raid the Karachi area with Carrier Division 1 and 4 while Hiryu and her sister and the two Shokaku sisters Upgrade in Singapore and Hiroshima respectively. I'm aware that I dont need to send the Shokaku class sisters back to japan, but I want to resize some training air groups, and upgrades are a good excuse to return to japan. In India Dean continues to infringe on my rightful liberation of southern India and is attempting unsuccessfully to encircle me but today he got a bloody noes while attempting a river crossing with the 40th Division.

So 2 Carriers sunk and rest are crippled , congratz . Did you get confirmation on any other carriers with air losses and such ?
And since they are crippled i imagine they cant go far , bring all of your carriers together and raid Sydney and Melbourne

As far as I can tell only enterprise, illustrious and hornet were part of the TF and No additional ground loses of carrier planes was spotted in the air casualties. In regard to your suggestion to raid Melbourne, me and my opponent know each other pretty well as we have been opponents of each other since we both started playing the game around christmas this year. This not the first time I've killed most or all of Dean's carriers and I know that dean is prone to conceding after experiencing sudden carrier loss syndrome and I would rather continue the game. I've never played a game past turn 180 ish and I would like to take this game at least into 43. So I'm not keen to just end the game by raiding Melbourne and Sydney. Hence I'm going to show an odd degree of mercy in this regard.

Well, he needs to learn that the Allies can come back after losing the carriers. Either that, or not have them go into Harm's Way.

May 24th

not a ton happened the past few days in between posting but today was an auspicious day in Northern India. Dean had largely abandoned Jamshedpur the day before which was taken with little opposition and today Howra capitulated as well. Deans 3 Divisions which retreated east of Jamshedpur now have no where to run, other than southwest which will shortly be cut off by my tanks, as well as the 18th, 5, and 33rd Divisions. They are in effect dead meat. The loss of 3 Divisions should allow me to take Calcutta fairly easily. Combined with the debacle for dean in the south and the allies are having a bad day in India for sure.

Ground combat at Howrah (52,36)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 28062 troops, 239 guns, 56 vehicles, Assault Value = 886

Defending force 4656 troops, 40 guns, 51 vehicles, Assault Value = 25

Japanese adjusted assault: 635

In southern India today I launched sweeps against Madras and traded evenly. Dean must have put high quality pilots into these units as I'm having a hard time for once.

Dean has a problem with sending carriers where they should not be. Hes lost his carriers in largely the same spot, off the coast of Australia in previous games without learning his lesson.

Normal milk runs in China and Northern India are unopposed, and Dean has ceased air operations for a turn in southern India. Hes been trying to bombing my troops in southern India for not much effect using a squadron of 14 wellingtons. A few days ago I jumped them with zeros and shot half of them down and since then dean has ceased any offensive air operations in the south. On the ground Dean is pulling back in southern India, but appears to have given up on the cut off Indian and British troops in Northern India. I plan to combine my troops in northern India and get rid of the encircled troops before taking the under defended Calcutta. With only around 15k troops in Calcutta It shouldn't be too hard even with a 4x bonus. south of Jamshedpur I route some survivors Who escaped the fall of the base.
Ground combat at 50,35 (near Jamshedpur)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Carrier Division 1 and 4 are passing south of Ceylon right now so should be up by Karachi in around a week. In terms of R&D in six days the A6M5 goes into production, and A6m5b will be accelerated to 1/43 in three days. I expect to get the A6m5b around August of 42. I currently have 6 groups of 30 factories accelerating the zero line with the engine bonus, so I accelerate the air frame every 9 days.....

May 29th The Battle of Luganville

A few days ago I spotted a convoy unloading at Luganville and vectored a cruiser TF to engage.
The TF consisted of the cruisers Atago Tako Naka and Sendai as well as six DDs. Recon indicated that Dean only had some DDs present protecting the convoy but boi were they wrong. The BC Repulse was present and I figured that my cruisers were in for a bad time. To my surprise however my TF did remarkably well considering that they were out gunned, and were able to seriously cripple, if not Sink a CL and outright sink 2 DDs. In return I lost a DD (my first DD lost thusfar) and a cruiser and DD damaged. All ships still alive are able to make reasonable speed with the slowest being Yuzuki making 20 knots after a collison with Naka.

Most AFB's would consider this a win and take this trade every day, all day. The allies get 100's of DD's in replacements, the IJ gets only about 40 real new DD's and then about 40 more glorified DD's that are closer to an E late game.

When trading ships think you need to trade at least one class lower (CA for a BB, E for a DD, PB for a DE/SC/KV) to be even close to even. Its not so much about ship value as it is replacement cost; the allies get tons and the IJN gets pounds ...

Don't you mean one class higher?

And yes, the Allies can afford this trade although it may not feel right. You will run out of ships and they will be even stronger. Especially with those little Fletchers . . .

whether it should be considered a IJN or USN victory is ultimately a matter of semantics, I'm just happy that I didnt lose anything too important. When I saw Repulse was part of the allied TF I assumed I would lose a lot more than a DD. If the Nashville does indeed go down I think it was worth it.

Yes, a Cl for a DD is the exchange rate that the IJN needs at a minimum ...

June 2nd.

R&D news:

The A6M5 went into production this month, so I'll be upgrading my carrier air wings shortly, 2 Tojo R&D factories have fully repaired with another two with a single factory left to repair. It looks like I'm going to get the Tojo IIa a month early. My Ruffe factory converted to A6M5 accidentally so I guess I wont be building anymore of those. On the bright side I'll be able to upgrade my air wing a bit faster. I suspect that by the time I fully upgrade my Air wings to A6M5 that the A6M8 will arrive. I'll probably leave a bunch of my land based air wings as A6M5 for a while for the extra range. carrier borne air wings will all upgrade directly to A6M8, skipping the A6M5b.

The main news today was my raid on Karachi which achieved complete suprise. Most of Deans fighters were on the ground training and the attack took place in two waves. The first strike targeted a TF that had just left port, and the second targeted a TF still in port unloading.
Losses were minimal with 2 zeros shot down and 4 bombers shot down. An additional 3 zeros were lost to OPs and 4 more bombers to OPs. In return 9 allied fighters were shot down.

I think that you have two days to revert the Rufe factory if you want to. Otherwise, convert a small factory that is not producing.

With school finally getting going my frequency of posts is going to decrease as I am sure you guys have already noticed. I wont be posting every day as I have in the past but will try to give you guys an update at least every in game week (or every 2-3 IRL days) and ideally every 2-3 in game days.

Yesterday my G4ms in China got jumped by the flying tigers due to poor fighter coordination and my sweeps going in after the my air strike. Lost around 20 bombers .

Carrier division 1 and 4 continue to blockade Karachi, I'm somewhat reluctant to try and attack the ships in port while dean is aware I'm here since he has a good 80 fighters protecting the port. I'm gonna wait outside of air search range between Karachi and the Aden off map exit for around a week and then try and raid Karachi again. If I'm lucky dean assumes the coast is clear and I can net some transports/tankers or even a reinforcement tf. If nothing shows up during that time I'll move back into range and raid the port after extensive sweeps.

Today the second attack on the encircled troops west of Calcutta occurred. I'm gonna wait a few days for disruption and fatigue to go down before attacking again. I also have 2 more divisions on the way to help.

reinforcements: CV Kaimon. The first of the Shokaku Kai class carriers. Until her sister arrives in August she will join shokaku and zuikaku in carrier division 3. I'm thinking about conducting a joint carrier fleet operation in the SW pacific in around 2 months once all my ships are done upgrading. I really feel that I should be pressing my advantage in carrier air power, I'm just not sure how I want to do so. I'm considering taking efate or some other unoccupied island near luganville and using it to isolate the 30k strong garrison on the island. Depriving luganville and noumea of resupply will threaten Dean's line of communications in the area, while also preventing him for using redeploying the garrison or using it in offensive operations. I'll probably bring yamato, and the nagato sisters over to wscort the initial invasion convoy, and to bombard luganville. The kontos can also help out with bombardment. I've been stockpiling fuel at truck since I the SRA so fuel should be a concern at least for a while.

Air strikes by b-17s on the Aleutians and port Moresby continued. I'm moving some Nicks here to help.

Morning Air attack on Port Moresby , at 98,130

Today the b-17s in the aleutians got some payback. Around 12 Nick's were on station when the allies attacked, and they shot down 2 beasties, with another lost to operations! In other news next turn a bombardment TF of most of my battleships will bombard madras where dean has the majority of his fighters in india. The bombardment will be followed up by sweeps by around 100 Oscar's and zeros.

If this wasn't bad enough the last of the encircled troops at Howrah surrender today. Yesterday the two other divisions surrendered so after a few days resting Ill move onto Calcutta. Considering he only has 15k troops in the city I doubt it will take very long. After Calcutta I intend to cut across central India to force the troops in the south to either retreat, or be cut off. Based on the losses screen dean lost around 1k ground devices today.... So I suspect that I killed at least a Division if not two.

Yesterday Strikes on the convoy near karachi Continued but I forgot to save to combat report, and I'm too lazy to reload the save XD. To sum it up I sunk a half dozen more cargo/ transport ships with the rest left damaged and burning. Today I finished off a few more from the convoy but there are still some survivors that have to be hunted down.

Also today I attempted to use my tanks to help soften up Chinese defensive positions. The results were mixed. Ill probably wait a few turns and attack again. I'm concentrating all of my heavy artillery in support of the tanks. I've bought out most of the heavy arty from manchuria with only a few more needing to be bought out. I've been saving PP for around a month to buy out the components of the 1st and 2nd Tank Divisions which arrive in 6 days.

In other news my Helen IIa factory repaired so I will get the Hellen at least 1 month early. All 5 of my Tojo factories have repaired as well so I'll likely get it around 7/42. Deployment of the A6m5 began at the start of the month, and the first shipments are going to my carriers. After my carriers are upgraded I'll start upgrading land based air wings. The first of my 4 Judy factories also repaired so I will be getting the Judy at least 1 month early. 3 of the Judy factories will stay on as R&D factories.

June 21st

Calcutta fell in a single attack 2 days ago. The troops at Calcutta will move towards central India to force dean to retreat from the south. I dont expect to cut off large Allied forces I just want them out of the south. In the SW Pacific area Dean's is still launching periodic raids on shipping and stepping up air attacks via B-17s. He got unlucky a few days ago and the Strasbourg was hit by 2 torpedos by I-24 just outside Townsville. The ships then decided to retire north for some reason and were attack by G4Ms from Woodlark.

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Cook town at 92,137

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid detected at 77 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 26 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 25
G4M1 Betty x 27

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 17 damaged
G4M1 Betty: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied Ships
BC Strasbourg, Torpedo hits 1
DD Helm
CA Vincennes

Aircraft Attacking:
18 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 45cm Type 91 Torp
9 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 45cm Type 91 Torp

CAP engaged:
VMF-211 with F4F-3 Wildcat (0 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling)
Group patrol altitude is 10000
Raid is overhead (not sure where these came from, must be based at Townsville)

Another attack was launched but failed to score any hits. I plan to attack again tomorrow.

Dean was apparently heading north to bombard Port Moresby but the damage really wasnt that bad.

Night Naval bombardment of Port Moresby at 98,130

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 5 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 1 destroyed on ground
E13A1 Jake: 1 damaged
C5M2 Babs: 6 damaged
A6M3b Zero: 8 damaged
A6M3b Zero: 1 destroyed on ground

Allied Ships
CA Algerie
CA Vincennes
CA Indianapolis
CL Helena
CL St. Louis

Around Perth we spot some nasty Cruisers. not sure if they are coming from Cape town or escorting a convoy to Karachi. I feel like they are escorting a convoy. I might be tempted to stay west of Karachi for a bit longer and delay the upgrades a few weeks.I'll probably just dispatch the 4 Myoko class Cruisers and maybe the Fusos to blockade Karachi from a safe distance.

ASW attack near Perth at 48,147

Japanese Ships
SS RO-63, hits 4

Allied Ships
CA New Orleans
CL Achilles
DD Blue
DD Ellet
DD Benham

In other news the components of the 1st and 2nd Tank Divisions have Arrived and will be transported to India shorty. I dont think I'm gonna keep them there long term but just use them to mop up allied resistance in India before I find a better home for them. Might try Invading western Australia around October-December since I get the feeling that most of Dean's unrestricted units have moved to India by now. A late Invasion of western Australia could really throw dean off Balance.
