June 23rd

Night bombing in the SW pacific continues, not sure there's any point in me trying to contest it until my Nick squadron arrives.

Night Air attack on Port Moresby , at 98,130

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 33 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 3

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 1 damaged

Off Australia A sub spots a BB TF on the move. I get the feeling they are gonna try Bombard Port Moresby or one of my other air fields. I'm gonna try and drop some mine at Port Moresby which is the only Major Air field without defensive mines.

Sub attack near Newcastle at 93,167

Japanese Ships
SS I-27, hits 2

Allied Ships
DD Balch
BB Warspite
BB Nevada
BC Repulse
CL Dragon
CL Danae
DD Mustin
DD Hammann
DD Hughes
DD Pope

I think you misunderstood what I meant by keeping them there long enough to "mop up enemy resistance." They will not participate in the destruction of already encircled units, nor do I intend to keep them in India while I could be using them in China or Aussi for more important operations. The Tank Divs in India will spear head my advance towards Delhi and will play a key role in forcing dean to retreat or be cut off. Once dean is forced back to north western India, the Tanks will be withdrawn and possibly used in an invasion of western Australia, or used in China to help push towards Chungking. When the 3rd tank Div spawns I'll use it exclusively in China along with the tank regiments already there. In around a month I get 2 more Tank regiments which will probably be transferred to China.

Then I did misunderstand. You are going to use them as the hammer in the more open terrain.

june 25th

reinforcements: Fumizuki (Akikizuki class DD)

Today began with an unfortunate sub attack near Japan

Submarine attack near Tokara Retto at 100,63

Japanese Ships
xAP Teiritsu Maru, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 4, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Triton

Not much else happened today other than the Tojo IIa accelerated to 7/42 meaning it will go into production in 6 days. I currently have 5 R&D factories on it with plans to put 90 of the 150 factories into production. Not sure if I want to put more factories on tojo R&D.

Heres a question for you guys, Should I seriously attempt to accelerate the later Tojo variants or just leave 60 factories on it. The later variants dont seem like much of an improvement other than the addition of armour around 1944...

I havent posted many pictures lately so this should help aleviate the situation and give a better understanding of the situation in China right now. My main objective is pushing towards Chungking, but given the terrain its not going to be easy.

Battle of the Arabian Sea June 28th,

A week ago I dispatched a force to blockade Karachi while carrier Division 1 and 4 retire to Singapore for upgrades. The Battleship force passed Bombay on the way to Karachi and spotted a force of allied cruisers in harbour, which immediately sortied to engage my TF. I'm not sure why dean was willing to engage me outside the range of his LBA, perhaps he was trying to bait me into range. Regardless of his motive a surface engagement ensued. Initial contacts were spotted at only 7k yards so the first engagement occurred at almost point blank range. It appears that Japanese Night fighting capabilities are still superb. The allied force did not have any surface search radar, and I imagine that played a key part in my victory.

At the end of the day the Sumatra is the only allied cruiser to escape, and a further 2 destroyers are confirmed to be sunk. No Japanese ships are in danger of sinking, but 2 dds and a CL are moderately damaged but still able to make 23 knots at worst.

Total allied losses are at least 1 CA, 3 CL, 2 DDs, with several DDs left burning and heavily damaged.

Total Japanese losses: 1 Cl moderately damaged, 2 DDs moderately damaged, 2 DDs lightly damaged, 1 CA lightly damaged.

I'm glad that boise is finally dead, she took 6 bomb hits from Pilots from Hiryu and Soryu earlier in the campaign.

BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

I notice in my game, I am the Japanese and it is now late Nov 43, that in my night surface actions I have had little luck with my long lances. Historically that was the Japanese main tactic, to get close enough to launch them then open up with guns when they believed the long lances should be on target. I can count on one hand the number of long lances that actually hit during an engagement, even at 2,000 yards, with an enemy that was surprised. This is really my first game that the long lances have performed so poorly, I have been playing PBEM with WITP and WITP-AE for over 10 years. In your first round you had no hits with your long lances though the battle started at only 7,000 yards. You have a few hits later against crippled opponents in later engagements.

DD Reid was hit by a long lance and sunk during the first engagement, I think I landed 2 more long lances after that. Over all I agree that torpedo hits seem very rare in this game, and ive never seen more than 1 long lance hit in a single salvo.

The Shokaku class carriers just finished refit at Hiroshima, and will sortie up to the Aleutians to engage his carriers if they stick around. A G4M unit training in Japan prior to deployment is being redeployed to the Aleutians to attack the allied TF. based on the amount of attack planes it looks like its the wasp possibly supported by a few CVE.

July 8th,

R&D work will begin tomorrow on the A6M8, which all my carrier air wings will upgrade to. Many of my land based Air wings will continue to use the A6M5 at least until all my carriers are upgraded. Ill likely decide which land based units upgrade to the A6M8 on case by case basis dependent on how important long range is for their combat area. With my current R&D commitment of 6x30 factories and the engine bonus I'm accelerating the Zero air frame by 12% per day, or approximately 360% per month. With my current rate I expect to have the A6M8 within 4 months as its date of arrival in the mod is 8/43.

The Tojo IIa has been in production for a few days now, and I'm increasing production up to 120 from its original 90. might end up increasing it up to around 150. I should be able to upgrade my first unit to the Tojo in around a week. The K-49 IIa will begin production in August with 60 moving to production and another 30 accelerating the later variant. The Helen will replace the sally in all front line roles, and the Sally will be used in secondary roles such as ASW, and China.

last turn a Sub spotted and attacked the Wasp Twice!! but the first attack only hit with a dud, and I-157 missed with her second salvo. Either way I have info from my opponent that Wasp came onto the map needing upgrades, so she appears to be heading back to the west coast to replenish her air groups and upgrade her AA.

Ive been Sweeping Chungking for around 2 weeks now, along with bombing the air field to prevent further fort construction. The Chinese aren't able to put up much of a fight.

Morning Air attack on Chungking , at 76,45

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 18 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 40

Allied aircraft
I-16-III x 1
P-43A-1 Lancer x 1

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
I-16-III: 1 destroyed
P-43A-1 Lancer: 1 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
40 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 15000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Chungking , at 76,45

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 33 NM, estimated altitude 12,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Allied aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
SB-III: 1 damaged

Also forgot to mention that Bangalore fell on the 5th, with significant allied casualties (approx. 500 squads destroyed)

July 12th

reinforcements: 8th fleet at Truk, this will be moved to tarawa to provide engineers and aviation support.

Sweeps are not met with any resistance today and it looks like he has pulled back planes for the air field I bombed earlier. Recon still reports 50 fighters at Indor (NW India) so the Tojo IIa will make its debut in the sweeps tomorrow.

The main event of the day was a deliberate attack in China against some encircled troops along my supply line. Once they are mopped up It will free up more troops to head north.

Ground combat at 77,50 (near Chihkiang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 88243 troops, 1080 guns, 937 vehicles, Assault Value = 2709

Defending force 25341 troops, 115 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 619

Defending units:

The three corps are pretty worn out, It probably will take only 3-4 more attacks to make them surrender. Once they do the artillery and tanks will begin heading north in support of the off road columns heading to the plains of northern China.

The tojo makes an explosive debut in the sweeps in India today. A squadron of Oscars went in first at 15k feet and are decisively defeated, followed up by an one sided follow up sweep at 20k feet by 30 Tojos.

Allied aircraft losses

Losses over all for the day are fairly even with the vast majority of Japanese loses stemming from the Oscar sweep which lost 16 planes. The Tojo sweep nets most of the kills, and only lost a single air frame! After this bloody demonstration the Oscar will halt all further offensive sweeps, and will be relegated to long range escort duty, and low level cap, At least until I can replace most of the air frames in service with the Tojo. I'll still likely keep a few sentai for longer range escort duties/LRCAP but thats about it. 2/3s of the Oscar production has been turned off for now, since I already have 100 in the pool.

In return 11-p39s, 4 warkawks, and 4 p-400s were shot down mostly by the Tojo. The pilots of both air wings were very similar but the timing of the later sweep likely gave the Tojo an added edge over the exhausted defenders.

July 22nd

two attacks have gone in on Bhopal over the intervening days. The first achieved 3:1 but failed to take the base.... The second only got a 2 to 1. I'm gonna move north and around the base with most of the divisions, to cut his line of retreat. Bad weather has grounded most air operations in China and India recently. Once the weather clears I'm gonna start sweeping Bombay with Tojos and A6M5s.

In the Philippines I've almost completely ignored Clark and Bataan. the 16th Division, 65th Brigade, and all engineer and arty assigned to 14th army were left to ensure the Americans couldn't escape. I'm planning to actually clean up This eye sore finally. Within a week I'll have enough PPs to buyout the 1st Division from Manchuria which will be moved to the Philiphines. The defenders are completely out of supply (I've been bombing their air fields since day one) and have been bombarding them for months. Here is a snapshot of what is in Clark, with more defenders assumed to be at Bataan. The 16th division is currently a tile behind the front resting in preparation for an assault.

Do you guys know if coastal guns still fire if they have 0 supply? Im thinking about sweeping the mines at Battan and bombarding the base, that is if the coastal guns wont be a problem.

July 24th

I was gonna move around Bophal, but given closer inspection of the combat report I realized how close I was to 3 to 1 in the last attack, and the reduction of the fort level to 1. If the damned weather will relent, I'll be able to provide the air support that made the initial 3:1 possible, along with some rest. Bad weather has continued but I'm gonna try again tomorrow despite the weather reports.

Thankfully in China the weather has relented so my Bombing raids have gone in on Chinese troops defending the road north to Chungking. Once the encircled troops finally surrender all the heavy artillery and tanks will move up the road to start grinding, while lighter infantry units infiltrate's off road east and west of Chinese positions. Dean will be forced to either pull back or be cut off.

Japanese air attacks are split up over a few attacks with this being the largest one

Morning Air attack on 55th Chinese Corps, at 78,48 , near Chihkiang

(about 3 corps and a HQ are in the tile with most of deans troops arrayed in a defense in depth leading up the road to Chungking)

IJN Pilot Pools review, and training standards.

My IJN Fighter pilot pool is currently sitting at an uncomfortably low 57, with an additional 70 in the Tracom. I have around 350 fighter aircraft training IJN fighter pilots with an additional 60 or so float planes also training air skill. Ive been drawing down Tracom a bit to replace the 60 exp pilots that arrive with carrier air groups in this mod. My overall minimum quality standards for my fighters are 70 Air and 65 Defense, with 70/70 being the ideal goal. Some of my frontline land based air units have pilots in the low 60s due to the lower state of Exp most Japanese air wings begin at at the start of the game. for the first few months I lived hand to mouth in regards to IJN fighter pilots, so my standards were not always attainable. I try to send my 55-60 exp rookies to quiet sectors where they can gain exp flying CAP but that isn't always possible.

For bombers I have 88 in the pool and 4 in tracom with about an even split between dive bombers pilots and Torpedo Bomber pilots. All my air groups in Japan have been resized since around Jan of 42 so I don't have many more avenues for expansion of the training program without pulling back frontline units. Torpedo Bombers are trained to 70 in torpedo and 70 in Naval bombing, while Dive bombers are trained to 70 in Naval Bombing and 60 in both Ground bombing and Naval search. I try to get at least 65 Defense like any other pilot type.

In terms of Patrol pilots I have 64 pilots trained in Navs 70 and 65 ASW. Demands for new pilots are fairly low and Ive resized quiet a few Air groups up to 24 with around 250 float planes sitting in Nagasaki Training. I plan to keep 2 Cruiser float plane carriers around to ensure I have a back up cruiser so I can keep resizing air wings.

The IJN further have 14 transport pilots and 12 recon pilots. I only have 1 IJN recon unit of 6 planes serving in a training role, but I dont exactly need many pilots for the 2 other recon air wings the IJN possesses. No IJN transport units currently serve in a pure trainer role but most of the air groups are training pilots when not in active service.

IJA Pilot pools

The IJA has 71 Fighter pilots in the pool with 40 more in TRACOM. My standard for fighter pilots is 70 air and 70 defense with 65 defense being an acceptable minimum. I'm not too worried about my IJA pools especially with the Tojo coming online. The Tojo has been almost unbeatable with only 2 combat losses thus far so I don't expect heavy air loses for the IJA for a bit.

IJA bomber pool is currently at 137 and growing so no real concern here. Ive been training my bombers in ground bombing and ASW. Ive swapped a few training wings over to Ground bombing and Naval bombing in preparation for the Lily dive bomber. Most of my Bomber pilots in the pool have ASW training but not all of them.

I am swimming in Transport pilots with currently 100 in the pool. I train up to 70 trans exp and usually call it a day.

My recon pool is fine with 61 in the pool most of which are 70 recon skill
