Despite our best efforts there's a bug and an error or two in one of our scenario files. That means there will be another update for Desert War down the line. So! To make amends, we will include a hypothetical scenario in the next update. What would YOU like to see? Convince yourselves of what is best--so we can know how to best proceed.

Thanks for your continued support of Desert War.

If it has to be hypothetical then it HAS to be the invasion of Malta!!

Malta...not what I had in mind--but I like the idea. I didn't want the chore of creating a new map but...an island? Not a big deal. I've got an OB somewhere for the 1942 plan to invade Malta. Interesting...will think about it further.

What's your hypothetical?

I was thinking Anzio. I know its not a hypothetical scenario, but what if you put in some hypothetical options. When you compare Anzio to Salerno, it seems the Allies were very under powered at Anzio, which prevented a breakout. The Axis forces response seemed more on par with Salerno. I know the reasons for the small Allied force had to do with resources being diverted for D-Day, but what if things were different. What if the Allies received two more divisions? Another infantry division, and part of a armored division? What if the player had some choices of allied divisions received? This could mean a initial breakout by the Allies toward perhaps Rome, or cutting off the north to south road nets. Then we could see a very determined Axis counter attack. There could be some options for the Axis forces too. I think the 1ss division was in Italy at the time, and what if it was available to take part in a counter attack? My favorite type of wargame is when both sides have opportunities to both attack and defend, and I dont think this type of scenario would disappoint.

Like Malta idea. Or say Rommel defeats EL Alamein and do a scenario him attacking Cairo or say the Suez Canal. Or finally a scenario where Rommel is totally backed by Hitler who decides Africa will be the main battlefield with Arabia as end goal. SO give him some great reinforcements, an army worthy of Rommel you could have it near the start of the Campaign or Say Russia has collapsed so here come the Tigers....just in time to repel Monty El Alamein attack..and then push forwards

Let's imagine the Germany won a strategic victory in Summer 42:

Stalingrad and the Caucasus have been secured, releasing not many troops, but fuel, some tanks and a lot air support for the Afrika Korps.

As a result the Axis won an operational victory at El Alamein and Malta has been neutralized (if not taken
altogether).

It's now December 1942. After regrouping and while all is quiet on the Ostfront Rommel rides East
towards Cairo, with plenty of ammo, fuel and air cover and the ultimate goal of pushing into Iraq.

Here is the part that makes it fun: while the Brits lick their wounds and dig a defensive line with what's left of their forces... the US 2nd armored division is hastily transferred to Egypt under a new commander (we know whom!) with the order of meeting the Huns head on the plains just West of Cairo and stop them at all costs.

Yes?

Rule One on this hypothetical...it has to use the current map--Nofilia to Alexandria.

A what if scenario Germany never entered the Desert War but Italy won the 1st few battles and didn't stop on the Egypt border so maybe up the Italian units strength.

sigh. :)

How about paratroopers? Can the engine handle them? What if the German paratroopers had been used in Africa rather than Crete? Could they have been used to cut off the Allies frontline? The Italians also had a paratrooper battalion that was considered for Malta's invasion.

The main hypothetical is that the Germans somehow have air control for a week or so. Again maybe Malta has been taken?

I like the paratroopers idea. Could have a Long Range Desert Group Scenario go and attack airfields etc.

I'm in the midst of a deep-dive back into Stalingrad. I'll emerge briefly for a Desert War hypothetical using existing maps and OBs. Currently, I'm leaning toward an extended version of Tough Old Gut (Salerno). Give me a better idea.

Airborne operations can only be portrayed in Desert War on the margins. Salerno--no problem. The paradrops there were behind friendly lines. Sicily? Maybe. Opposed drops like Crete, Normandy, Holland--not so much. The paradrop player needs the capability to select drop zones for airborne and glider units (1st, 2nd, and 3rd waves, etc.) and airheads for re-supply of all. Day vs night drop...scatter--Desert War does not support these requirements. Yet. Monty's Front will get after these necessities.

On Opposed Airborne Drops...though we did not design it to be so...it appears the game engine can handle this situation quite handily. I recently played the Salerno scenario where the Axis overran the 82nd Airborne Division's "behind-the-lines" drop zone. What happened? The 82nd dropped in, battles were fought, and the game went on. Airhead/supply--not so much.

So yeah...Desert War can do airborne operations; Stalingrad does it better. Monty's Front will be designed with airborne operations as the central theme.
