This is where I lack game understanding, I thought the soviet armies did not suffer from winter as the Axis and would be able to attack during winter months with less penalties.

It is possible to do winter offensives with the Sovs, but you have to save up advancements and drop winterization on some choice units and mass them on a sector of the front. Most people don't do this. (I don't do it.)

Yes I dont think it can be done properly. The axis units are just not weak enough. If the big drop in readiness came on turn 1 of the bad weather and then slow recovery upwards then maybe but as it is in March there may be a few weak units. Best chance might be if the axis units havent recovered so much and you get cold/clear weather in April/May.

But just one example in this game from last turn 2 Soviet armies 12 attack each vs 1 german div 4 or 5 strength in normal forest I think def value 1.1 manage a 1:1 attack in snow. You dont have the manpower to risk such an attack so they wont happen.

November 6 1942

Finally peace and quiet all over the front. Inf armies filling up nicely, I have managed to take out mech units from the frontline and put inf there instead so there is a 2nd line in some places at least. 6 mech/arm units in the pipeline so thats nice. But of course German army has never been stronger either or the airforce but at least allied airforce in total is bigger than the axis airforce now.

In Spain nothing goes on. Both I and the Axis move away air units from the front.

I have been thinking of options. In my game vs Flaviusx I tried an invasion around Taranto. It basically failed and I got Taranto only because I had troops coming up the boot of Italy and help the invading units out. That is not very likely this time. And the cost of a failed invasion will be like 200+ landing ships and 2-3 mech units and 1-2 inf corps. Could easily be a new Gallipoli. Especially since I dont even have air superiority over the area. Will be an risky proposition at best. So I came up with another idea. Churchill would be happy . It would kind of try to punish the Axis for not taking Greece. The idea is to take Greece for myself. Together perhaps with an airborne assault on Sofia to take Bulgaria too and suddenly we would have a front just a few hexes from the Rumanian oil. Crazy or not, anyone have any opinion? You are welcome to share your thoughts. And hopefully no spies to send this information to Berlin .

If it was against me, I would not invade Greece. I'd have Sofia garrisoned, as well as Bucharest. But Battlevonwar's garrisons in the east are a bit sketchy. He has let some partisans pop up in his rear in Russia and also hasn't covered his Baltic ports.

Personally, I'd go all in on France. This should help unlock the Spanish frontier. He can hardly ignore a drive to the big ports in the Low Countries.

Thanks for input it will be France for sure and maybe something else :). Regarding Sofia since he didnt invade Greece Bulgaria is neutral. I will start with France and after seeing the response and what reserves I can detect Ill see if I might do something else.

Yes I have spotted garrison in the Baltic is not there considering doing something but with only one port to work from it is not easy.

November 20 1942

November comes too an end. No Stalingrad encirclement unfortunately but a bit of a scruffle near Ivanov and Gorki because of cold weather. The Germans attacked and this time I tried to patch together some kind of counterattack since December and January is snow/Blizzard for certain. Overall losses 2:1 in German favour. Not good but Ill take it.

I managed to maintain hold of the marsh line outside Leningrad and looking at German units outside Leningrad this looks like an tempting area to try and do something later in 43. Unless I get totally slaughtered .

In the Mediterranean nothing going on. I invaded Rhodes just because I could.

Are these big pictures better than the old ones or too big?

For me the new pictures are too big. I have to scroll back and forth to read your text. But, this is a great AAR. Thanks!

I have to admit, I do like the big pics. They are a lot clearer and you can see the units a lot more clearer. I'm following both AAR from both sides so I feel I shouldn't say anything. I agree with John B., this is a great AAR. I especially like the though process both of you are sharing at strategic moments in the game. Thanks.

How do you upload such big pics? There is a size limit I believe.

So funny. Of two people so far answering one like and one does not . Ill see if I can do some kind of compromise.

Thanks, I have never done AARs before Warplan but it is fun to do. Takes a bit of time though. Need some practice before WitE 2 . Need to experiment a bit more how to make clearer pictures and so on.

Yes I know old screenshots can be hard to see anything. It has been a little bit on purpose for security reasons since I post in realtime no turn lagging most of the time. But I think one have to trust ones opponent so that shouldnt be a reason not to post more detailed screen shots. So now I try to do that but now they are very big instead Ill try and see if I can find some compromise.

I use paint net a free program. Just save as an JPG and save the picture at under 200 kb (you get to decide how big you want it). On the older screenshots I first reduced the size to 60% and then saved it as an JPG.

Thanks about the AAR: Its fun to make especially when it is close and exciting like this game and the one I played vs Flaviusx.

20 December 1942

The year comes to an end. Just to show the Soviets are still kicking I launch a modest offensive around Rostov. Kicking a couple of Rumanian divisions backwards. But even with these attacks I lost like 2-1 so yea winter and combat .

Rest of the map not that much going on.

Are you using air to support your attacks? I don't see any around Rostov. Thanks again for the AAR, it is very much appreciated and I know it takes time away from gameplay. I'd even go as far to say, many read but simply don't comment.

No the Soviet airforce doesnt exist and you are right the Rumanians had defensive air support that of course made a big difference. So I shouldnt moan too much :). I am firstly going for an army if there is anything left I will try to build a modest airforce at least.

January 43

We play at a pretty furious speed. I play 4 games at the moment feels like I just sit whole days and send back turns :).

Which is basically what I do but it is fun so why not .

January comes to an end. I kick some very weak German corps around and manage a 2-1 return but 4 losses vs 7 so not much but it all counts.

Manpower down to 50% that is not good. Anyway new units come online and not much more units to fill up so might recover a little bit in February and March. I plan to make Ivanov-Gorki-Moscow triangle the main battleground if I get a choice. Open terrian and no rivers. Goal Moscow obviously only 5-6 hexes away.

Excellent AAR - The battle between you two is epic. It showcases each player's skill and the quality of WarPlan. Well done.

- I do like the larger pictures, but am happy either way.

February 1943

Again I attack a couple of really weak units they retreated and losses were like 2-2 so not much going on .

But spring is approaching and the world holds its breath.

Stage is set in the east but bad weather not even cold weather continues.

Spotted some units behind the lines. I see only 7 arm/mech on the frontline so I suspect the worst

The situation in France. A bit interesting could be the Garrisons in Marseilles and Nice, southern France held by axis minors if they are divisions it could be something.

North of Velikie Luki it's interesting that the line is being held by garrison troops. Good use of the landscape as with rugged terrain it's hard to dislodge troops. If those troops you've circled turn out to be Armor then I'd assume you are expecting a break through and forced retreat again? I see you've countered with your own armor and mech. Maybe you might be pushing back. Gonna be interesting for sure.

Yes battle of Kursk in the North . Didnt happen but could have.

Battlevonwar reinforced a little around Leningrad and removed garrison status from them. I will still try and attack there a little bit.

May 7 1943

Maybe the deciding summer is about to begin. My goal is to try and overload the railcap and make it a little harder to respond to all the threats I hoped too create this turn.

In the east I managed 3 small breakthroughs. I shattered 3 corps including 1 arm and I overran 1 ground support unit. Since there is only 5 axis air units in the east that was a large part of it so that was nice. Losses about 1:1 like 110 points each. Many Soviet units already tired even after using a fair amount of supplytrucks the first the Soviets have had in the whole war so far.

I also took a readers advice and invaded Riga. If Konigsberg is not garrisoned I might do the Soviet version of Coast hoping in the Baltic.

To try to manage manpower all inf are at replacements off. Only mech units get any. If an inf army gets decimated too much it will be disbanded. Manpower at turn end like 54% but with over 100 points lost in 1 turn it will soon be under 50 if I dont manage to balance this correctly.

I have built a small airforce but I built the Mech first and then the airforce so it will not show up much before summer ends ah well. I know I was hesitant to build any air at all but I think that was a mistake should have built a few in october/november.

My goal with the invasion of France is not necessarily to stay in France it depends on how it all plays out. Main objective is to help the Soviets.

In France it was all scary I had almost no idea what I was invading into. Luckily you do get intelligence on Calais since the UK unit in Dover can see over the straits. I invaded there and it was a fairly weak italian corps who got destroyed.

In Brest I was afraid there would be a full strength 30 corps. There wasnt only a 20 one. Still the Americans could not get Brest so that was a setback. But I dont see so many strong units nearby so I hope/think it will fall next turn.

The American para is probably lost but he cut the railroad and might be able to supply by air and still the Axis will need a couple of units too deal with him.

Finally the invasion of Southern France. I got hold of Nice occupied by a division. I intend to reinforce it a bit and see if I can get Marseilles too.

I still have like 450 landing ships so 1 big or 2 small invasion still possible this year.

Very impressive and bold moves. Well done. Resources will now need to be shifted from an alternate location. Italy???Russia???? The plot thickens. The ball is now in Battlevonwar's court.

Just notice, the reports and stats must simply be estimates because I see in your first report 207 MM and 34 escorts casualties and then in the second report it went down to 135 MM and 10 escorts, while USSR casualties went from 2237 up to 3175??????

Fairly big retreat in the east Soviets run to catch up. Moscow in sight a bit earlier than I expected. Invaded Finland might be useful but I think sending it to Riga and raid a bit behind the line might have been better but those moves feel a bit gamey and I dont like them so I hesitate to use them sometimes.
