Where to start ...

I will kick off with a few ideas for Russia since, in most games, you need to win there.

Start the first turn by stopping all unnecessary research and immediately research inf weapons 1. You also need to have enough MPP in turn 1 to buy an engineer unit. If playing with hard build limits, you cannot get the 3rd engineer but if soft i build that unit as soon as I can. Do not spend anything on building Other units, yet.

Opinions vary as to what else to research. Inf warfare first but remember you can wait on that a bit since you only need it by the start or next turn of Barbarossa. If playing more defensively, anti air tech before armored warfare. If playing more offensively, forget AA and pick advanced tanks next, then armored warfare. Some like AT but am unsure of its value. It wont help much because you are always behind the german panzer tech. Otoh it can burn unwary panzers.

You want inf 2 as soon as you can. Luck with the tech development can ruin the Germans’ game.

I suspect another HQ unit is probably vital but that can depend on how soon you get attacked. HQs are expensive but quick to build. Maybe try to time it so the unit appears in July? I have also heard that buying heavy tanks before medium tanks is better ... something to do w build limits. You need one more before Barbarossa happens.

Hoard your MPP at all times but keep an eye on the clock ... units appearing too late cannot entrench fully.

Depending on China, you need most of your Eastern army back in the motherland. Remember at least one of them is not on a rail line so set that up early. Consider bringing them all west except an army in Vlad. But, mostly, the Jap attack in the east is not much to worry about and the best defence is to be good in China.

Then decide on where to defend. I have lost badly by defending too deep. Based on others’ defence, build a line along the Dnepr and have your best units in Kiev and Dnepropetrovsk. The morale loss of those two is bad. Forts there are good. Stops an armored drive into the Caucasus.

I have seen use of all the garrison units to slow down the drive to Riga, but not sure it works. Those units can also be used to slow south, or hold fins in the north.

One trick is to channel your attacker into poor terrain. So defending the Smolensk / Moscow highway is good, forcing germans either north or south.

Learn how to use army ZOC ... armies in cities and no more than one unit gap. Armies behind others in triangular formations, using cities and towns.

The light cruisers in the black sea go to the ports on the eastern shore just in case there is an amphibious attack.

Finland: if you accept the Winter War decision, consider a very aggressive strategy to kill Finland early. I have seen this done (to me) and it is almost unstoppable if you have armored warfare, tank 1 tech and hit the Finns when they deploy. Use Baltic fleet to block ports so no reinforcements, if you can. Air unit in Tallinn to spot. Personally, I refuse Winter War. Just defend there. Use corps there so more armies Vs Germany.

YMMV ... usually depends on reading the German mind ad to what their plan is!

Hi, thanks for the response

By and large I do all of this stuff, although i find the below interesting. I may well try these out

Possibly i need to raise the priority of Anti-Aircraft defence research for USSR. I'm possibly also guilty of spending too much on research in general.
In comparison should each Allied major spend more, less or the same on research as Germany ?

I find that USSR gets killed by German airpower

and that if they have 3 HQs, 2/3 fighters plus other bombers and 2 tanks in North Africa then they can't be stopped and it doesn't really prevent an early Barbarossa

I love this game but I'm losing the will to play as the Allies

I understand you very well. Around February-March, when was playing 10th or so game as Allies I was just thinking WTF. But in reality, game is pretty well balanced (unless you face top tier, highly optimized openings, but that's another story) and Allies have plenty of opportunities when time comes.

But it s very hard to answer your question directly, because you could probably write a book (!) about an Allied strategy. What exactly do you have problems with? Russia? Early game?

Nevertheless, you can do some things right out of the gate:
1. Check AAR's in appropriate sub-forums. I like those with plenty of screens, because thanks to them you can see what good players do, e.g. positioning their armies, unit composition etc.
2. Ask specific questions in these forums - the more conrete, the more elaborate answer usually is, while general ones are often left alone.
3. Shameless self-promotion - you may check a guide mentioned in my footnote.

Allies are very demanding to play, but when tide turns, it is very satisfying.
