Status: offline 		Hell is for Heroes (1962) starring Steve McQueen. Great film, slightly on the dark side with McQueen playing a bitter loner. Apparently most of the actors hated the film due to poor budgeting and bad props. Apparently McQueen's Grease Gun kept jamming in the film, and it wasn't scripted, but due to badly made blanks.

Did you know that Peter O'Toole was married to his co-star Siân Phillips for 12 years before the film release in 1971? I think I've only seen the O'Toole/Clark version. A very good film - but a bit of a tear-jerker.

It's not the time period of the subject, but the time period the film was created in.

The recent Midway film was neat visually, and a lot different feeling than the older film, but often, it's the age the film was made in that made it memorable.

After watching The Battle of the Coral Sea, I find it hard to like if you watched it for the battle (which was horribly accomplished).
I liked watching The Graf Spee film Battle of the River Plate, but the vessels used in the film were of course not ideal. We kinda sank the German navy. Not much left to use in the film. The Sink the Bismarck film is a better looking film I suppose. I don't recall much in naval film for the Mediterranean. There must be something out there that isn't documentary.

The crew of an Italian sub is trapped in the hull after a collision. Heroism ensues. This movie was made with a real submarine crew instead of professional actor, and as fascist propaganda. The story, however, has nothing especially "fascist" in it and can be labeled as "universal".

Made by Roberto Rossellini, it is the story of an hospital ship during the war. Once again no professional actors were employed, but the real crew of an Italian hospital ship. A naval battle in the movie is re-enacted by splicing together real footage from the Battle of Punta Stilo and the Battle of Cape Teulada (here you can see a rare reconstruction of what happened inside a ship involved in a naval battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krFxUrZsYqw&ab_channel=alex84roma) Once again, the actions shown could belong to any ship from any nation in WWII (and the movie actually shows the battle in a realistic, not "glorious" way).

Thanks for posting. I hadn't realised it was available on YouTube and hadn't seen that in many, many years.

A very good film, well acted - though as with many such films one should take many elements of it with a pinch of salt if looking for historical accuracy.
