Why don't we add a small one at start in Tahiti? We could use a 3500-4000 T French ship for the squadron there and then bring in a BIG AKE to help with the BCs when they arrive. Hadn't really thought about that until Paul brought it to my attention.

The Alternate French story in BTS:

When the fall of France occurred, the French Fleet fled mainland France. INSTEAD of going to North Africa, Martinique, and Dakar, the French move--en masse (that's a FRENCH term!!!)--to Great Britain. There is no Mers-el-Kebir bloodbath or antagonism of the French by the British when they formally surrender. The Fleet defiantly rallies to Great Britain and serves the rest of the war in that capacity.

It is this action that allows for the French to station several cruisers, DD, and SS at or near Tahiti for action starting December 7th. If these ships are present five months later, they join that powerful Surface Squadron built around Strasbourg and Dunkerque where they can truly raise some HELL if so desired.

I would have had the French Fleet move to the Caribbean (Martinique and Guadeloupe) and be supplied with the fuel to do so by the US. But not enough for them to sail from there until after the US entered the war. This would explain the low experience levels. This would also have kept those two areas from going Vichy.

Just curious - the French warship main guns - is the British ammo compatible? Would Britain have to replace the guns?
And torpedoes for the French subs and DD?

You could make ammo for the main guns, just mill them to the correct size and shape. The large gun barrels took a long time to make. The smaller guns were replaced in some instances, I do believe.

I hear you but different ammo types cause royal pains in supply chains. Now if the British shipyards had a few spare main guns that they could move to the larger French warships, all you are talking about is labor and your supply chain is clean. Swapping main guns (if they were available) would lay a warship up for what - a month?

Now torpedoes for French subs - That'd probably take longer to swap out (a WAG on my part there).

*** Note that on page three, Big Red noted the difference in French guns also.

It is not just swapping out the main guns but the hoists and other equipment for moving the ammo plus the ammo storage spaces. Then there is the size and shape of the propellant and the black powder charge setting that off. The smaller guns may come complete with the primer, propellant charge, and the shell in one unit or the shell in one unit with the primer and the powder charge in another unit.

Then the guns were expensive to make and you just did not have a bunch of them laying around. Many times, older naval guns were reused on newer ships:

May 1, 1942

So here is a funny story. I have my CVs roaming around, as is my want, and got a turn from Big Red this morning. I was at the computer when it came in and had high hopes for something to happen. Unfortunately, NOTHING happened...so...SIGH...I sent the new turn to him with the following note:

Hah! Fast turn around this morning.

We have Wreathes Across America this morning and I am home all day after that.

Welcome to May 1942!

Evidently Paul doesn't know too much about the Wreathes Across American program, because he had gone to work and interpreted my note to mean that I had sunk something MAJOR and that wreathes were needed for the brave boys lost at sea! He leaves work early to get home to check out the turn, calls and leaves a message to post anything major here on the thread, then calls again and catches us just back from the Wreathes ceremony at our small prairie cemetery.

We talked about 15 minutes and had a good laugh over his misunderstanding of my message.

After post #95, Roland Smoot was ordered into action with one DD(all the allies have in the area) against a big Jap CVTF. DD was posted at Hiva Oa. Mission was to give the slower ships in the area a chance to escape/evade. The DD Anderson will be awarded a presidential unit citation. Comander Smoot was not reported KIA so he may return later.

A look at the intel gathered from the action and note about the Haguro collision. Also note DD Anderson engaged the CVL at 16000yards. I will ask John if I got the hit(lucky shot). You never know what lurks down in those Islands. I would bet IJN used 25% ammo. Maybe John will come back.

John 3rd has moved one KB to 3 hexes of Tahiti. Defended by a DD flotilla. looks like DD Gwin put every shell into a CV or CVL. All allied DDs later sunk by IJN air. The real story is where did the Jap BCs go? And the Shokaku is along way from a safe home port.

May 1942
CV Operations

There have been two Operations going on involving the Japanese Carriers. The Gulf of Alaska and Tahiti Area have seen a good amount of action.

Gulf of Alaska
Centered around the new CVs Junyo and Hiyo, the Japanese in the north go on the attack for three days and do reasonably well. A total of 4 AK, 1 KV, 1 TK, and an ACM are sunk for NO LOSSES to the aerial contingent. By the 4th of May, the CVs turn about head for home...

Tahiti Area
A Carrier Strike Force (4 CV, 2 CVL, and 2 CAV) goes on the rampage in this region finding a target rich environment. The Raid begins April 28 and wraps on the 3rd of May. The pickings here are much better. We'll do a day by day synopsis:

4-28 DD Benham and AO Neosho are hit and probably sunk.
4-29 Strikes and Surface TFs account for a KV, DD Anderson, and an AE.
4-30 Nothing
5-01 DD's Gwin, Case, and Conyngham plus a PC, TK, and AK are sunk. DD Jervis is damaged.
5-02 DD Cushing is sunk by Surface Action as well as a PC and AKL. Tahiti's Port is hit by 85 Zero and 88 Kate hitting an AP and AGP while downing nearly all of 12 Fighters on CAP.
5-03 STF sinks an ACM

The Raid smashes a nice number of DDs and serves notice that this region is vulnerable. Totals: SUNK--6 DD, 1 AO, 1 KV, an AE, 2 PC, 1 TK, 1 AK, 1 AKL, and an ACM. DAMAGE--1 DD, an AG, and an AGP.

Just read the actual RULEBOOK and it says on Page 26, that PBEM games cannot be shifted in Turn Speed. Is this wrong?? I just wrote on this in the War Room thread...

42-5-19:
Allies were able to slip the 66th corp of the chinese central reserve into Myti before the Guards showed up. In NoPac the japs have isolated Dutch Harbor which is currently under seige. An IJN CVTF with 4CV and 4CVL is actively roaming around the SoPac. IJN recon subs are used in conjuction with these CVTFs to scout Transport TF locations to insure no passage to AUS or into SoPac. Same type of IJN CVTF is used in Indian/Bengal. It appears John3rd has three large CVTFs. One each for NOPac, Sopac, and IO/Bengal. It appears his study of the pre war treaties has given him insight into a better CV defense setup utilizing BTSL.

At Myti currently the allies are having success with CAP traps Based out of India. I expect this to change as John builds up the area.
