Not sure its a bug or I'm not understanding what I'm seeing, I'm using a S-72A with sensors added, (AN/APG-81 AESA), and when trying to identify targets on Woody Island during Air Sea Battle, in editor mode, I can see that there's something there but I cannot get any detection Information beside "Detected by Automatic detection on unknown"

I cannot target these Items either?

Am I tripping?

I believe I've attached a save

ps I still can't figure how to post a screen shot?

Hi BrianinMinnie

To attach a picture to your post is very simple.
1. Click "post reply", not fast reply.
2. Check the "Embed picture in post" check box.
3. Click "Click here to upload!"
4. Select the picture.
And your done

Just remember to use a jpg or gif file and you can only attach one file to every post, so if you attach a save game you can´t also attach a picture.

Hope this helped.

Søren

Not sure what your expectation is on this one. The units that make up the airbase are autodetected and the APG-81 only detects moving ground units accurately. The "?" units are the same way, as far as I can see. They aren't auto-detected because they are mobile. The 81 only sees that something is there, not what. It might ID it on a closer bass.

I'm going to play around with the space plane proximity and ID capabilities.

So played with it. As I suspected, with the 81, its only getting "a unit is exactly there", but not what the unit it is. If you move the SR-72 a little so the FOV of the ASARS-2 hits the island, you get an immediate exact unit ID. The 81 gives you 360 degree coverage, but only a detection. The ASARS gives a detailed radar photo-like coverage with an exact ID, or close enough. Again, if its auto-detected, I think thats all you'll ever get and can target it with that.

Thanks 75 & Wood

So I moved the SR72 closer, pointed it at the island but no joy?

It does pick the airfield individual units, but only gives detection attribute info on the SAMs & the SSM. It doesn't give Detection info on the radars either?

Maybe this a setting or a variable that the scenario creator designed? to prevent targeting of the runway or Radar assets? it doesn't seem so

Although in another test, I see by switching sides, the no-detectable items have taken damage from hits from ordnance, there no way to receive post attack damage status intel since the objects are not info detectable?

No matter what platform I use on the blue side or how close i move it, the islands radars give no detection attribute data.

weird.

Thanks

Ultimately I was able to both target and destroy or damage all the non attributed detected items but I guess my original question still is why no detection sensor data about those units?

Thanks

So lets take a different tact.

If a unit is auto-detected, unless it moves, that will be the only detection you get and its all you need. It is targetable without any other unit seeing. It is set up be the designer of the scenario for a specific reason. My experience is fixed ground installations, especially air facilities, are known IRL and set for auto-detectable so long range strikes can hit them without risking recon assets.

The mobile units were not set as auto-detectable. So an APG-81 will detect that a unit is there, but not anything about the unit. The ASARS has a more limited FOV, but if you move it in the editor so that the base falls into its FOV it will get a solid ID every unit on the island. But the air base units will still say auto-detected because you don't need any detection.

The other thing to consider is that to assess damage or housed air units, you most likely need visual ID on all the units. The SR-72 is not going to do that from 90,000 with fog and a cloud layer between it and the observed units. It has an accurate ground radar, but don't think it has the accuracy to detect damage through the clouds. You would have to test if its accurate enough to detect damage through it.

You can easily change a few things in the editor if you are obsessed with having the air base units detected through the SR-72. Just go into the editor and change those units to not being auto-detectable. Its kind of unrealistic, but no more than putting the apg-81 radar on an SR-72.

btw, not sure why you needed to put the 81 on the SR-72. The ASARS-2 is a much better ground mapping radar. You just need to fly towards the island for bit.

Hi BrianinMinnie,
thewood1 gets it right here.

Auto-detectable is a special tag that makes the contact provide permanent best quality intel along with accurate location, heading, speed and altitude.
This state bypass other detection logics AFAIK.
So the unit could bury itself under a layer of 1000m of lead, it will remain the brightest thing on your radar.

Do you suggest another type of auto-detection? One that would "ping" a single time at scenario start, giving initial intel with different ambiguity / intel level.
This way an auto-detectable unit will no longer be impossible to hide thereafter.

Geoffroy.
