Hello,

I have been playing CS since the 90's and of course I have the 2.02 Matrix version. The last install I did on my system was 4 or 5 years ago and all games have been running fine. Suddenly now when I load a scenario in RS I see the map, I can click on buttons, I can minimize, maximize and close the game. If I click on a unit or hex on the map nothing happens. Its like the map is just frozen and this has never happened in the past. I do NOT have this issue in WF or EF so its just RS.

Any thoughts or idea's?

When was the last time before this that you opened an RS scenario successfully?

Maybe it's just one or two "bad eggs"? Maybe you will have better luck trying other RS scenarios?

Is there a Logs/error.log file? What does the tail end (last ten or so lines) of Logs/engine.log say?

I am sure I played maybe 3 months ago roughly.

I tried 3 different scenarios. All of the ones I tried I have played in the past.

There is no info in the error log that is recent. Most recent entry is 2019

In File Explorer, you make a copy of Logs/engine.log while the RS executable is locked up in the manner you describe. Then post the entire file here, as a .zip file. Else just copy-paste the last 10 or so lines here in text form.

Logs/error.log is cumulative, and doesn't empty unless you do that manually. By contrast, Logs/engine.log starts over afresh every time you launch the game engine EXE. It is important to capture Logs/engine.log precisely when the issues are happening. (Don't somehow exit the game first before capturing and posting.)

I should add I have an Nvidia 980TI with I believe 12 gigs of RAM. I have 32 gigs of memory and a hexcore 3.5GHz and plenty of drive space. I am running Windows 10 64 bit OS. I do not use any mods.

Again, for an engine.log captured while the slowdown/lock-up issues are ongoing, still in progress, zip up that engine.log file and please post here.

Here it is from Burma Railway. I wasn't able to upload a zip so I added a .txt extension at the end to get around that. Just remove the .txt from the file and you should be able to unzip it then.

Your engine.log is essentially identical with what I generate here.

All I can suggest at this point:

  • Make a copy of your entire JTCS installation, whether on some other drive (if you have one), or in your current game install drive, but where the copy folder is "John Tiller's Campaign Series - Copy" or somesuch.
  • Reinstall and patch the game.

    You should be able to run the game from either installation. Reinstalling will not muck with your current installation. If things don't work out, you can blow away the new install, and rename the earlier install back to ""John Tiller's Campaign Series".

    All I can guess now is that somehow your RS install is corrupted. Reinstalling might do the trick.

    I reinstalled base game and all patches. Same results with Rising Sun not working. Could this be an Nvidia driver issue? If so I would expect issues with all 3 games so I don't get it.

    What we know (among other things):

  • You could run RS successfully in the not too distant past.
  • I can run RS successfully now and in the past.
  • Failure to run RS is not, and has not been, widely reported.
  • (You can even now still run EF & WF successfully.)

    (And also: Attempting to launch the same scenario, Burma Railway, we get essentially identical engine.log outputs, with no clue as to what the issues might be on your end.)

    Apart from possible file corruption on your end (which we can maybe rule out, due to your reinstallation), what could have changed that might cause this new failure?

  • Recent Windows update(s). And/or...
  • Recent driver update(s) (maybe the mouse driver).

    I have an older laptop that, in the course of CS Middle East's development, suddenly ceased running all CS games (mouse click slowness, and other general sluggishness). No amount of diagnosis, deep debugging, and fiddling with the system and hardware could fix the issues. (There were other non CS issues. Eventually, I paved the system and slapped Linux on it.)

    All I can suggest you try now:

  • Maybe try changing your mouse.
  • Hope to get lucky with some future Windows/driver update(s).
  • JTCS was released in 2014, when around that time (a) we were using Windows 7 to develop the game, and (b) we were still supporting Windows XP, so some extra bits of Windows XP are still in the game executable. You might try fiddling with some of the compatibility settings. For rs.exe only, in File Explorer, right click on rs.exe, then try experimenting with any of the options given. In particular, the "Run this program in compatibility mode for ..." You might also try "Run compatibility troubleshooter."

    My best guess is that something in your OS has changed. Since we are no longer set up here to deep debug rs.exe (a game released over six years ago), there is effectively nothing more we can do to help you.

    But try the latest suggestions. Good luck.

    Did you happen to add any scenarios from the Blitz or something else?

    Sometimes this will cause the game to stop working if there are data errors in the files.

    A reinstall won't work in this case if you didn't go in after the uninstall and delete any remaining files.

    I haven't added anything. It's a standard install using the step by step instructions I found on this forum.

    I discovered that it was an NVIDIA service causing my issue. Here's what I did to fix it.


    1. Type MSCONFIG in the start bar and hit Enter.
    2. Go to the Services tab and find NVIDIA LocalSystem Container. Uncheck it and hit apply.
    3. Restart PC.


    That's all it was for me. Until I find a way to resolve the issue, I have to disable the service when I want to play Rising Sun (East Front and West front don't have this issue) and reenable it after.



    If this isn't the conflicting file you have, you can try this to find it instead:

    1. Disable all background programs. You can do this by running MSCONFIG and disabling all non-windows start-up programs and services.
    2. While in the Services tab, make sure you click 'Hide all Microsoft services' so you don't accidentally disable any.
    3. After you disable all non-windows services, run the game. If the problem goes away, then there's a conflict.
    4. Reopen MSCONFIG and enable the services one by one until you find the conflicting service. You will need to restart your pc after each enable and see if the game runs. Keep going until you find the conflict.
