T126 9/2/42 Meanwhile preparations continue to be ready for a massive 42-43 winter offensive along the entire front. This view is the last railhead constructed delivering the goods to the fronts.

As indicated, some 1941 fortified hexes are relevant again.

It's worth noting in this situation that the facing of fortress hexes is purely graphical. A fortress hex facing e.g. southwest will do perfectly well at defending against an attack from the northeast. This is very relevant for an Axis player retreating back over the western Soviet Union.

T131 9/20/42 Here is a view of the Baltic front. In a few more turns the mud will begin. At that point the Axis will lose their shock advantage on the ground and in the air. Then the grand Soviet offensive will begin on the entire length of the front. The Red Air Force will deploy early and start clearing out the Luftwaffe in preparation of the ground offensive.

T131 9/20/42 Here is a view from space showing the entire front. There are enough forces along the entire front to attack when the mud arrives and then pick up speed when the snow arrives. My recon attacks earlier showed the Axis defenses are too strong right now with 120 percent shock effects on the ground and in the air.

For most of the war the Red Air Force has avoided combat. In a few turns they will come out in full force to smother all Axis units on the ground and in the air.

URAH!

T136 10/7/42 The grand offensive has begun. The Axis defense line is very strong and was only broken in 3 small sections. The first is in East Prussia as shown.

T136 10/7/42 The second is further south near Pruznany. It is a slightly larger opening in the Axis front.

T136 10/4/42 The third area is in Bessarabia. There were over 400 attacks in turn 136. I suspect the number of attacks per turn will increase greatly in the next few turns. The Red Air Force is in battle for the first time in the war to stay this time. While it is only late 42, the Axis forces have a shock value of 100 on the ground and in the air. The Soviets have a shock value of 100 on the ground and 90 in the air. On the previous turn the Axis was at 120. Attacks did not work on a large scale at 120 for the Soviets.

Later in the coming winter the Soviets will receive a shock advantage which I hope will bring Berlin within reach before summer.

T136 10/7/42 Most of the Axis casualties were caused by land attacks, however the combat phase was finished with 228 bombardments of artillery all along the front. The last few results are shown here. I am sure there are many Axis units in the rear that are not visible including panzers. If the panzers lash out and cause serious damage I can always pause the offensive during the mud turns which start on turn 139.

T137 10/11/42 Here is the second turn of the grand offensive. The Axis line has been ripped open in several locations as follows. The first one shown is the Bialystok front.

T137 10/11/42 Here is the Rumanian front. One large opening in their line.

There is only one turn left before the mud begins. The offensive will slow but will not stop. Once the snow turns begin the offensive will go forward with reckless abandon, heedless of loss, all the way to Berlin.

T138 10/14/42 Here is the Hungarian front. It appears the entire force of Hungarians are nearly surrounded. The next turn is full mud effects so it looks grim for the Hungarians.

T138 10/14/42 Here is the Italian front. They are holding better than either the Hungarians or the Rumanians. However even their front is starting to show signs of stress.

Looks like the Axis needed to pull back the whole southern flank, but now it's already too late. A line along the Carpathians might have been possible before everyone got enveloped. Offhand, it looks like too much Axis strength was forward with not enough depth and reserves for counterattack. Given the potency of Soviet artillery, this was bound to lead to this outcome.

Really at this point the Axis player can't be having any fun, I would expect him to concede.

T138 10 14 42 This is my first try at FITE2. I did not know what to expect, and still don't going forward. I suspect there is much more fighting to do before I can get close to Berlin. As the front gets shorter the Axis can form ever more effective defense lines. Supply alone will hold me back as I found out earlier. I had to retreat back to my railhead with no Axis defenders in front of me. The mud will start on the next turn, so any rapid advance by the Red Army will have to wait.

I have had heavy losses and I do not know if that will matter yet.

Not if you keep chopping up their front and wiping out big chunks of the Axis OOB like this.

It is possible to advance if you're on "Overextended". What you can't do is engage in any serious fighting in that condition. You'll want to have the units in green health ready for the pursuit and then shove them as far forward as they will go. In particular, if you're on "overextended" but the other guy is on "unsupplied", you're going to have the upper hand.

As long as there's open road ahead, you can keep moving on red all the way from Vladivostok to Berlin... and in some instances, depending on the unit type and initial strenght, you can still fight any ant units on the way. One of the most... intriguing decisions by Norm.

Well we're post-Norm now. A lot of scenarios now use the "overextended" setting, which means that below a certain supply level units no longer draw replacements. If you combine this with a lot of attrition through movement and especially if there's a pestilence effect, you can find that such units rapidly lose their fighting strength. However, if there's no opposition (or if the opposition is easily bamboozled into encirclements) you can carry on regardless.

T145 11/8/42 After four turns of mud there is not much change. The Germans are holding. The Romanians and Italians in the south seem on their own. The Hungarian pocket is getting smaller. The winter offensive will start on turn 147 so things should change then.
