The R+R starts to pay off. Both Terauchi and Itaguchi push forward, inflicting some losses on a number of units as well as destroying one.

In the south, Okamura's forces can't take Nanning but the defenders are emptied from the city.

In the northern USSR Riga falls, as does Vitebsk. Smolensk will be a tougher nut to crack - requiring the defended Bryansk and Orel (out of picture) to be captured first.

In the south, von Leeb pushes east in order to try and destroy whatever is west of the great Don bend.

A better turn for the Japanese. Despite aircraft being grounded, Terauchi's forces have pushed into the Chinese defensive line.

Meanwhile to the south, Itaguchi's troops destroyed a Chinese corps and III Corps was ordered into the junction between the two Chinese army groups.

In the Soviet Union I guess I will end up behind real life thanks to the awful start I got in the north, where I never had anywhere near enough units. Probably won't get quite as near to Moscow either - although I have taken Sevastopol.

It's all kicking off Pru!!

The Japanese declare war on the USA and co (not the British).

I take a chance and split my forces. The Kido Butai heads for Hawaii, where they destroy two battle squadrons and damage the third. The heavy cruisers are left untouched. My big concern are the remaining ships and the sub at Midway. But hopefully I've blocked off the exit to the naval base with my sub and cruiser picket. I hope the US subs run into my destroyers too.

That leaves the remainder of the fleet to invade the PI. The carriers prove useful, destroying the USN light cruisers and causing casualties to the defenders of Manilla.

The other target was Wake Island.

Meanwhile in China I feel like a head of steam is being worked up at last.

The Japanese have managed to increase the size of the wedge between the Chinese armies.

In the south, Nanning has opened up some possibilities. I don't know how heavily he's defended Kweichow but its nice to at least be on the move.

The Soviet Union was something of a mini disaster. Rain everywhere (seriously?). I took a couple of important hexes - but by that I mean I cleared them but could not enter them. Rostov was particularly painful but so was clearing the Dvina only to find I can't form a bridgehead....

So as we near the end of the year, Pskov, Bryansk, Orel, Voronezh and Rostov are all enemy owned....

Better news in the far, far north where a British destroyers hung around for far too long and my Maritime Bombers saw off the little ships. I stupidly lost the heavy cruiser squadron I managed to get all the way back from the South Atlantic.

So as we come to the end of 1941, the US are in the war and we have a truly world war at hand, lets see what has happened so far.

Losses

Axis losses have been relatively light as to be expected. The Japanese losses have been limited to two garrisons in China, while the Italians I believe lost a garrison in East Africa.

German losses have come from poor play. The tactical bomber I believe was lost because the Germans allowed the Soviets to attack first. The destroyer flotilla (Baltic) and one of the heavy cruiser squadrons (Norwegian Sea) was just careless. The only other losses have been a sub and a second heavy cruiser.

I don't have much to compare to as I haven't kept a track in other games, but the Allies losses at least seem reasonably large.

The Pearl attack was sub standard and only two battleship squadrons were sunk, but the bomber unit and light cruiser squadron in the PI were destroyed.

The Soviets have lost 30 land units of all types (plus 1 partisan) but not a single aircraft unit so far which again is a knock-on effect of having the Soviets declare war. The navy in the Black Sea has been destroyed (2 light cruiser squadrons) and the battleship squadron and light cruiser squadron in the Baltic were destroyed, leaving at least 1 sub and possibly a destroyer flotilla.

The Chinese have lost 24 land units (no aircraft) and this is probably very light given the mess I made of the campaign initially.

The British losses seem higher than I remembered. The British in France were not that numerous, but somewhere along the way the British have lost 2 armies, 8 Corps a garrison and an HQ. Strange I can't recall where. Only 1 bomber has been destroyed, and perhaps more worryingly, just two cruiser squadrons (1 heavy and 1 light).

China Campaign

Five army groups in the field. With the war having been expanded, these units can't expect any further assistance in the near future and will need to make what gains they can before the Allied superiority kicks in.

I believe unit losses for majors include minor units under that major's control. So could be Greek, Malaysian, possibly Dutch.

Well that would explain a lot. The Greeks probably account for the two armies and a corps. Thanks

The Italians needed to strike quickly. But once the allies landed in force there was only one outcome. Its a case of hanging on for as long as possible.

USSR

The grandly, and optimistically, entitled 'Army Group' Messe. With two infantry corps and a tank unit, it has barely enough troops for an Army. And the Italians appear to be making a poor job of being security forces....

Here's another fine Messe you've gotten' me into Stanley
