In a PBEM game where I am getting my tail kicked as usual I did have some sunshine the other day. The scenario is “Green Hell” and I am the IJN. I am behind about 300 points and we are about day 15 or so I think. Anyway I had a TG with 4 BB’s and some CA’s and DD’s bombard Port Morseby. Lots of damage, but the most significant was the runway hits listed as 120! :D

My question is how long will PM be shut down? I did not notice the usual air traffic from PM that combat turn. :D How about he next turn? Will/could it still be shut down?

Depends on how many engineers (particularly engineer vehicles) he has. The Americans are disgustingly efficient at repairing things. Amount of supply has an effect, too.

In my games, airbase and port damage are repaired at about a point per turn per active engineer available. There doesn't seem to be an exact link between runway hits and airfield damage but if you hover the mouse over the base, it should give you the current airfield damage (if there has been a recent bombing or bombardment). Above 50 points of airfield damage the planes seem to be grounded. Well before that, a variable number of planes will be damaged or destroyed (by direct hits). How fast these recover depends on the number of aviation support points present (in the base forces).

Specialized Allied engineering units (Sea Bees and EABs) typically have 30 engineers and 20 or 10 vehicles per unit. Since vehicles are worth 5 engineers each, Allied eng units have the equivalent of 80 or 130 engineers each (while Japanese units usually have just 30 engineers). Base forces also have engineers. I regularly have 3 or 4 engineering units at a number of major bases (by late 1942) and take 40-50 runway hits a day from 80 plane Betty/Nell raids. The next morning the damage has all been repaired and airbase damage is shown as zero. Even after bombardment closes a base, it will normally be repaired by the Allies in two to three days unless there is a continual large scale bombing and bombardment. The same applies to port damage.

Long term, continual bombing and regular bommbardment will close a base and keep it closed. This is because port and airbase attacks kill engineers. Through attrition you eliminate the enemies ability to repair. Once the engineer units are gone or depleted the base stays closed. Until you are in a position to accomplish this closing a base has only short term, tactical benefits (such as during an invasion).
