What does an asterisk after the individual's name signify when looking at possible air unit leaders?

That means he is on the pilot list also. He will be a pilot. If you use one, you should set him to group reserve so he does not fly and get shot down.

They are pilots who can also command the air unit. It is not a good idea to be used as such except for a training unit.
