I had all parameters on 110 until turn 65 or so. I was advancing in Caucasus area. Then I noticed how computer teleported fresh fully supplied divisions in areas where supply would realistically be impossible. I had a working railnet and yet I had supply problems. Soviets didn't have even a mountain trail and they could teleport fullstregth tank corps over the mountains. How could you supply 200000 man army over Caucasus mountains? The immersion of a realistic wargame was gone. It was so unrealistic and frustrating, I almost quit playing.

I rarely get that far as I usually change my strategy or an update comes in that I want to use...

With the losses you are inflicting did you try to pocket more or push your way through?

Turn 107
July 4th, 1943

XXXXVII PzK was assaulting Voronezh. We took heavy losses, over 3000 men. Luftwaffe shot down about 240 enemy aircrafts during the battle.

There have been more enemy fighters over the frontline in the last weeks. Our air combat losses were 61 planes this week. The enemy air combat losses were 602 planes.

It's kind of mix I think. I try to pocket if I can. I also attack weak formations with force to make them rout or shatter. I try to keep the loss ratio as high as possible, so I can win the attrition war. It's slowly working, Soviets are not getting as much replacements in 1943.

I try to follow historical route in my game. My objectives were Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov in 1941. Casucaus and Baku in 1942. I didn't want to win sudden victory in June 1943, because I think Stalin would not have surrendered in similar situation.

Turn 109
July 18th, 1943

Northern part of Stalingrad was captured. We managed to make a hole to the front line and drive through to the weakly defended city.

More enemy formations were surrounded this week.

Some of our infantry divisions have only 5000 men left. We are going to sent them to Axis Reserves to refit.

Voronezh was captured.

The enemy is attacking near Lev Tolstoy. XXIV PzK was sent to the area for possible counter attack.

Another major enemy attack is going on in the south. Chertkovo is in danger.

I have rail lines to oilfields. There was a million ton storage of drilled oil. Oil was sent back to Germany by train, it's now in Axis pool.

My oil production capacity is now 380 or 380.000 tons per week. My refinery capacity is 507, it equals 126750 tons of fuel per week. My refineries can use only 253.000 tons oil per week. So, I'm drilling too much oil every week. Each week my oil pool grows by 127.000 tons.

Synthetic fuel production is 97.000 tons. Combined fuel production is about 220.000 tons. All produced fuel is used every week. There is no surplus.

I had to use superdepots to get supply moving. I moved superdepot east when I captured more towns with large railyards. Rostov -> Maikop -> Ordzhonikidze -> Grozny -> Makhathkala -> Baku.

There is no continuous railroad in the Black Sea coast. I used Sukhumi port as a supply source. Supply was air transported over the Caucasus Mountains as well.

The superdepot is now in Astrakhan.

XXIV PzK destroyed sevaral supply dumps, airfields and rail yards this week. We are not going to advance. Infantry divisions are going to stay in fortified positions. We are expecting enemy counter attack soon.

2nd Panzer Army HQ was sent to Balkans! Some idiot at OKW thought it would be a good idea to send Model away. I had to attach all 2nd PzA korps to 3rd PzA.

Interesting, so you basically get all of the benefit from just Maikop and Grozny.

The enemy is counter attacking near Bezhetsk. VIII Korps withdraws back to fortified positions. It is difficult to advance with light forces. German infantry divisions can't hold ground without trenches.

Enemy offensive continues near Volkhov. We are sending reinforcements.

Well The leader should be happy he wanted those oil fields and his Panzer's wont run out of fuel now.

Partisan activity must be hell down there tho, hope the Romanians can handle it.

cheers

Thanks a lot for this AAR!
It sets a very nice benchmark for my campaigns! I like how you do the pockets so well. Punch a hole, drive tanks to it, kill them all off. You make it look easy, but I know it's not, lol.

I do have two questions, if you don't mind.

1/ I see in your save-game that you build several depots along the railroads, like we all do. But you set several of them at priority 4, not just the one next to the front. Why is that?

I only set the one next to the front on 4, the next on 3, the next on 2 and all the others at 0.
So, with me, it would be something like 0 > 0 > 0 > 0 > 0 > 0 > 2 > 3 > 4
With you, it's more like 0 > 1 > 2 > 3 > 3 > 3 > 4 > 4 > 4 > 4

2/ You do not seem to move units around in your command structure. Why is that?

- For example, there are several units with non-matching types & command points.
Take the XIII corps, led by Freissner. He has an Infantry rating of 8, but he doesn't commands any regular infantry, only Mechanised for which he only has a rating of 6.
On the other hand, the XXXVII has several infantry divisions and is led by Lemelsen. He who also has a mechanised of 6 but an infantry of 6.
So, if both troops are switched and Freissner leads the mechanised and Lemelsen leads the infantry, the infantry units would have the same command quality (6), but the mechanised units would now have a command quality of 8 instead of 6. That means that they would lose only half the rolls that they now lose (20% instead of 40%) on corps level.

- Another example are the infantry divisions that report directly to the OKH, instead of following the typical division > corps > army > army group > OKH structure. They will lose about 30% of their rolls (Kluge has an infantry rating of 70%), which is a lot more than in a typical setup.

- There are also a lot of unspent APs (241 in turn 98) that are not used to replace bad leaders with better ones (such as Konrad or Stemmerman, who both have an infantry rating of 7 or even Rommel which has a mechanised of 8 and an infantry rating of 8).

You are doing very well against the AI, so maybe it doesn't matter as much as I thought, but you seem to lose a lot of command quality overall and I wondered why you do it like that.
