The codebreaking group at HYPO is dissolved due to political infighting. Code breaking and signals analysis is centralized at OP-20-G in Washington DC. Despite the posturing, results are obtained, and the Japanese code is further compromised.

It appears my earlier assumption is incorrect – breaking a code does not change hex intelligence directly; it seems to provide a greater chance to return a higher result when using intelligence units, but I still don’t know for sure.

Construction of an airfield along the Koshi River is complete and the P38s of the US India fighter group relocate to their new home. The Burma Corps replace the understrength Waziristan Corps on the Dacca line. No attacks are made due to weather.

The Japanese CV strike force has disappeared. Shutting down the Indian convoy lane stopped the attacks on shipping but has also eliminated any chance of a surprise allied air strike on enemy carriers. The US CV group moves towards the last know location of the enemy. I hope to draw them into combat.

The 114th garrison division arrives in Diego Garcia. The port is supplied – I was happy to learn transporting supplies is separate from production.

I have no way to stop the Japanese 11th army’s push. The decision is made to retreat to the Jinsha River. Supply will be better which should help the recovery of effectiveness. Due to the constant pressure, I found it hard to cut off replacements for a turn so I can build a supply truck. However now is the time as I just traded space for time. If I don’t open the road to Ledo soon, I will be in trouble in China.

Escorts supported by patrolling destroyers sink an enemy submarine SP. I bring other destroyers closer in, anticipating the enemy’s movement.

UK: No replacements while convoys are off.
India: Replacements remain at 51-PP. I will keep an eye on oil usage.
China: No replacements to build stockpile for two supply units.
US: Transport and a Fighter bomber

India
Japanese bombers continue to pound the positions of the 4th Indian Corps. The 25th and Indian National armies attack the line but are repulsed. Losses are heavy on both sides, especially air units, but the Dacca line remains unbroken.

The Southern Air Fleet refuels at sea and steams southeast along the convoy lanes. It's clear they have been shut down, but for how long? The enemy fleet has been spotted by scout planes as the two combatants cross within 100 miles of each other. While there is no intel on the enemy, the Japanese fleet remains in the area to engage their foe. Leaving Rabaul, the Kido Butai steams full speed to join in the hunt. This leaves the South Pacific unprotected.

No combat this turn. Air units are rebuilding effectiveness and ground forces cross the Yuan attempting to maintain contact with the enemy. There are holes in the line however with the rain, and the head long retreat of the Chinese army, the threat of counterattack is small. The 64th division ships in from the Japanese mainland to help with partisan control in southeast China.

Submarines in the South Pacific attacking enemy shipping remain hunting convoys. The took a SP loss last turn and have yet to sink a merchant marine. The group will stay on station a bit longer.

South Pacific
No change in the Coral Sea or South Pacific Ocean.

The Indian 17th division arrives in Bombay and combines with the 14th division creating the 5th Indian Corps. The Waziristan Corp follows the rail line marching to the Koshi River. No attacks this turn as the allies remain on the defensive. We need to build up more units and stockpile before moving to the offense. The waiting is killing me.

With one enemy CV group close by and another large 11 ship group spotted off the west coast of Australia, the US fleet withdraws from the area. But it is just too tempting not to take one last swat at the tiger along the way. I move the fleet three hexes past the enemy CV fleet with my first move to cause an interdiction.

Moving at flank speed the US carrier force moves to run down the Japanese carriers. However, they are spotted and soon attacked by "Kates" and "Vals" from the Japanese carriers. Heavy ack-ack fills the air and F4F Wildcats flying CAP pounce on the escorting Zeros. Unable to penetrate the screen, the enemy is forced to target the battleships providing cover. The Maryland is hit, and both the North Carolina and South Dakota are sunk!

Although surprised, the US carriers were able to put their dive-bomber and torpedo planes into the air following a course to the recently located enemy fleet. The flattops are spotted! TBF Avengers target the Ryujo hitting her with multiple torpedoes, punching holes in her hull below the water line. Listing to one side, it is obvious the ship cannot last. Close by, SBD dive-bombers pound the Hiyo setting her ablaze. The SS-193 Swordfish attempts to engage the burning carrier but fails to break through the screening destroyers.

With their position known and a second CV force closing in, the US carriers move full speed ahead along the southern coast of Australia (second move). The 1st RAAF relocates to Albany to provide additional air support if needed. The BB USS Washington steams to join the retreating fleet.

I am not sure who won this engagement. The US lost 2 newer model battleships while the enemy lost one light carrier. The Japanese can claim a strategic victory as they remain on station attacking my convoys at will. This was a gamble, and I am not sure it was worth the risk at this point in the war. In four months, I will receive four carriers with many more to come during the rest of 1943-44. A little patience might be a smart thing.

The Chinese continue to pull back toward Kweiyang. Supply is still weak, but it is time to dig in and hold. Retreating seems like a waste of perfectly bad weather.

The 8th Naval Air dive-bombers continue on to India. The USS Washington steams out to meet up with the US carrier fleet south of Australia.

Central Pacific
The US BBs Nevada and Colorado leave Pearl Harbor heading to Australia to join the US CV task force.

West Coast
The US 2nd Infantry Corps boards transports and heads to Australia.

Communist China: 1 Supply unit.
India: Infantry division
UK: No builds. Replacements set at zero to continue to build stockpile. They are out of oil.
US: A-20 Havoc - twin engine land-based naval bomber.

Convoys
The Indian convoy route remains closed for business as there are too many Japanese CVs in the area. I believe I can still use transports without oil but will find out for sure next turn.

Policy Change
Based on recent events policy has shifted to the IJAs favor. With another failure to destroy the US carriers a decision is made to end the offensives in the South and Central Pacific.

The IJN is relegated to defense and convoy attacks. The island chains in the center of the Japanese defense perimeter are lightly defended. The Kido Butai will be charged with defending this large sea area from US incursion. The Southern Air Fleet will continue to harass supply in the Indian Ocean and protect the DEI oil supply.

Resources will move toward operations in the CBI theater. China is weakening and with Japanese occupation of Burma, allied forces can provide little support. Capturing Kunming and Chungking would be of immense value and becomes the primary objective.

The plan to capture Calcutta is dropped in favor of opening a second front with China. The 1st and the recently created 21st army will cross the Yom River and push towards Kunming. Indochina forces will be supplemented with additional troops to apply pressure from the south. General Tanaka, initially slated to lead the push towards Fiji and New Zealand, will receive overall command of the Southwest China operational area. General Yamashita will retain a separate command on the Dacca front.

The Japanese 10th division crosses the Yom River marching unopposed towards Lijiang. Making use of dry weather the 1st army moves to Myitkyina and will continue along the Lijiang Road. Air support will be provided by G3M “Nell” bombers.

General Tanaka takes command of his new Southwest China army group in Hong Kong. He will head to the front soon. Preparations are made to locate additional troops for the Indochina area. There is a need for both the offensive push and a solution to the supply problems caused by partisans.

The objective is to capture Chungking and Kweiyang. The 12th and 13th armies attack the Chinese cavalry unit catching it in the mud. After taking a 3/SP hit the cavalry retreats across the Jinsha River. Advancing across a large front the South China army group reaches the river. To the south, Japanese troops are within 50 miles of the key agricultural storage facilities along the Hongshui River.

US subs continue to attack our convoy routes but are not sinking material tonnage. Destroyers are rotating patrols but are unable to target the enemy. The Southern Air Fleet arrives in Singapore for repair and resupply. It will take at least a month for the Hiyo to be returned to fighting form.

The Kido Butai heads for Truk where they will be joined by the Hyuga BB squadron. Upon receiving orders to defend vast areas of the Pacific, Admiral Nagumo plans to draw the US CV fleet into a decisive battle by employing hit and run tactics on US shipping.

No change on the Dacca line. The Japanese head east in force with the 10th infantry division crossing the Yom River. Followed by a heavy Corps and an unknown air unit. Intelligence is unable to determine if this is a feint or a full-scale push towards Kunming.

The Japanese fleets leave the area opening my supply lines. The UK sends the 18th division to Madras and the 22nd Naval Air dive-bombers to Diego Garcia. The US 8th Naval Air - Scout Bomber Douglas (SBD) arrive at Colombo air base in Ceylon. SS-193 Swordfish slips through the Banda Sea, past Celebes heading to the South China Sea.

Rain continues while defensive positions on the west side of the Jinsha River are improved. Japanese forces are moving eastward from Burma which could be a real problem. General Chiang Kai-shek takes command of the defense in Kunming. Local troops are scattered and understrength. A line will be set up along the Hong River basin, but this will take some time. If the Japanese attack in force our biggest ally will be their lack of supply. It will force an attack along the Lijiang Kunming Road.

The US CV strike force arrives in Sydney, joined by the battleships Washington, Colorado and Nevada. General MacArthur moves his HQ to the northeast coast of Australia. The 2nd Corps arrives in port at Mackay. The 1st RAAF relocates to Townsville. A buildup in this area could force the Japanese to increase defensive forces in New Guinea, taking some pressure off China. If not, then we may be able to retake Port Moresby. Or see an opening to retake New Caledonia.

The 27th division heads to the Marquesas Islands on their way to Aitutak in the Cook Islands. I doubt the Japanese will come out this far, but I want to take the option off the table. My South Pacific convoy needs to be more secure.
