I have read several threads on QoL and Bureaucratic building and Barracks certainly help. I see mixed things on the rest. I am sure it depends of some events, but it seems a no brainer universities will help your research. However when I Google it, I get mixed results.

Not building QoL buildings has certainly help my cash flow. However my research is a bit lagging. I am looking for confirmation. It seems not having entertainment, hospitals, etc has not hurt me as the zones have ridiculous numbers and build their own. First game I don't have to worry about money and the people seem happy with me doing very little.

I wouldn't pour resources into a university that adds a research bonus that gets the square root malus when I can build/upgrade bureaucratic offices in every zone that benefit me more on an universal level.

Universities have an explicit research bonus listed as part of their production. However, it's pooled with research bonuses from hex perks (and maybe the cult(s) that give them?) and is subject to diminishing returns. If you don't have any access to other research bonuses, building a few university levels can definitely help, but stacking more on top of an existing bonus is much less of a return on investment.

University may get more usefulness in late game where with a large empire your throwing more BPs at research is itself subject to diminishing returns, plus a high rank university needs much less workers than a high rank Boffice.

Only if you haven't managed to get many research bonus sites. Extra research is never useless, mind you, but the the research bonus point they provide are even more subject to diminishing returns than BP.
