Really enjoying the game so far, I've just been looking at the map and planning routes of advance. A few questions have come up, and I know more will as I go, so I thought I'd start a thread to compile clarifications of the deeper mechanics for those who already have some wargaming experience. Others are welcome to post similar questions in this thread. I invite the devs and playtesters to help us learn your game even better!

Initial Questions:

Peiper:

- I would love to be able to emulate Peiper and put a battalion of the neighboring 3rd Fallschirmjager infantry on the backs of my KG Peiper panzers - late war FJs fighting alongside heavier panzers is such a great aesthetic and fairly unusual. When I actually start moving counters in my playthrough, can I do this? Do tanks in DCAO have any carry capacity, or would I have to try to add them in with transports and hope the receiving unit stays tracked? To clarify, I would be trying to add around 300 Fallschirmjager infantry to one, or split between two, of the KG Peiper tank units and have the receiving unit retain tracked movement.

- Confusion over tracked versus foot movement, again in Peiper's sector. In their unmoved jump off states, I notice KG Sandig is a heavily mechanized Panzergrenadier type formation, and has tracked movement as expected. However, nearby KGs Knittel and Hansen from 1st SS Panzer have nearly identical unit compositions and plenty of halftracks, yet they report as leg movement. Seems like an awful waste, and senseless if the difference of 1 panzerschreck or something was too big for tracked movement. Is this intended, a bug, or just a starting status and they'll mount up as they get rolling? Again I haven't moved any counters yet in my scenario.

Captured Supply Bases

- I believe in the manual there is a note that German players will generally want to set American supply bases to deplete upon capture, so they push out their fuel stocks to thirsty panzers nearby. This surprised me, as I would have thought they just augmented your organic supply network and pushed it forward. Can someone elaborate on this? Should you always deplete if you want the fuel, or could there be a situation where retaining the base is advantageous? Is this suggestion because it isn't your nation's supplies, so you just want to loot what you can use ASAP rather than adding it to your network?

Thank You, and I look forward to a great exchange between the devs and the players as we begin to understand this very rich game on a deeper level!

Very good questions, but unfortunately am currently the last one able to answer them.

Without question, the editor (troop types and models) can certainly simulate loading infantry on tanks. But one must be careful using the editor and modding files, until everything is better understood.

So the positive of it is that almost all things seem possible as the design moves forward! And that's what I am loving about the game so far.

Thanks for checking in! Yeah, I'm not interested in fussing with the editor myself, I generally want to enjoy the scenarios as envisioned by the designers.

Here's my take about captured supply bases. Warning: I did not play the campaign yet where it should be the most important. Only from smaller scenarios and the manual, so I could be wrong.

There may be two reasons why you have supply problems :

1) You just don't have enough stuff in your stockpiles

2) You need a better logistical network to push those supplies to your units

I guess allied are mainly concerned by 2) while axis has problem with both.

A supply base in regular mode will only help with 2). A depleted mode one will only help with 1). So if the axis has a global fuel stockpile problem in the campaign, using the captured fuel from a supply base in depleted mode might be the better thing to conserve your fuel stockpile or help your panzers going a little bit further.

Logistics, LOS/LOC are the key. It's also vital to take your time in having a look at the terrain. Avoid bottlenecks as Germans and push forward. Once I got access to my more powerful PC after the exer, I'll try my best to create a few tutorial slides about various aspects of the game, just like my famous TOAW IV Tutorial slides.

Hello all, Thank You for the great replies! I was busy preparing and traveling for Thanksgiving so just getting back to respond now.

quote:

Here's my take about captured supply bases. Warning: I did not play the campaign yet where it should be the most important. Only from smaller scenarios and the manual, so I could be wrong.
- Thanks Nico, I see this and was able to basically come to that conclusion by rereading the manual.

- Thank You for the guide, Davide! One consideration for future OOB/Scenario tweaks could be to either have some Fallschirmjager infantry already mixed in with KG Peiper for ease of play, or to furnish a surplus of extra trucks to haul the FJs for players in the know - I'm still concerned in the examples you give that these will slow to foot units which sort of ruins my 'ride forward on the decks of the panzers image' Would you ever consider adding a carry capacity for tanks of a certain size to facilitate this type of thing? It seems to me that both sides rode infantry on tanks in the Ardennes.

I'll try my best to create a few tutorial slides about various aspects of the game, just like my famous TOAW IV Tutorial slides.
- Thank You, Herr Oberst! It would be wonderful to see in depth tutorial documents like you and other players have made for games like WitE, Command Ops 2, and TOAW.

I wanted to draw attention to this question again:

quote:

Confusion over tracked versus foot movement, again in Peiper's sector. Is this intended, a bug, or just a starting status and they'll mount up as they get rolling? Again I haven't moved any counters yet in my scenario.

Why are these units behaving as foot with so much transport versus very similar counterparts that are tracked?

Thank You again, Gentleman, I have finally begun turn 1 and will continue to post good questions I come up with!

It's an easy and doable fix. Most units are based on a universal model TO&E. So, how to fix it? Simple. One creates individual unit compositions for the various KG and a separate model for it. Here's an example for a German Straßensperre (Road Block)

And here's the composition of the model.
