I was digging around trying to find information about Southern Storm. I found a video by The Strategy Wargamer from December 2020. The video showed several interesting things about the game. Below is a screenshot from the video that shows an engineer unit. The video the screenshot was taken from is a year old so things may have changed but I thought it was interesting.

From the same December 2020 video by The Strategy Wargamer it seems Southern Storm may have:
Decoy units & civilians.
Short & long bridge teams. Mine clearing and mine laying teams. General engineers.
SOP overrides for orders.
Stance for units. Example - Standoff range (3), Local initiative (slight), Risk acceptance (bold),
Mission overlay, Friendly units overlay, Threat overlay, user created map overlay
The H for HQ is now in top right of counter. The type of movement T, W or L is top left of counter.
Default Role for a unit: Main effort, Overwatch, etc.
More than three movement waypoints (at least five).

Below is a screenshot of an Engineer Report. (The video is a year old so things may have changed)

Below is a December 2020 SOUTHERN STORM REVEAL INTERVIEW with Rob Crandall. IIRC this same interview is posted somewhere else in this forum. Lots of interesting stuff. Some things I noted in the video occurred at the below times.

11:02 Added East Germans, Canadians, Czechoslovakia and French.
11:12 Maps are typically 50x20km = 1000km square. (I think Red Storm maps are typically 20x15km?)
14:46 Information organized correctly as reports from staff officer, S3, S2 etc.
18:03 Engineers are separate units on the map.
20:37 A campaign for each nationality.

Below are some bits and pieces of information I found in various threads on this forum. I paraphrased some of it. Also some of the below information is old so may not be accurate. I compiled information for this thread in order to have the Intel in one place.

FROM MATRIX FORUM:
For Southern Storm, we have added some better control over the use of vehicles post dismount.

1. Bridges - We are stepping out of the gate with what we call short-span bridges, AVLBs that can cross minor water obstacles. As for road/rail bridges, we assume all bridges are capable of supporting vehicles.
2. We have a number of new features and tweaks that will allow you as a player to better control the "style" of movement and engagements for units. Some units will have their own special abilities that will enhance movement modes. Also, there has been a ton of work on unit AI movement, orders delays, and command cycles.
3. We have several overlays and other means to "see" terrain, units, and markers. It's a whole new game in that aspect as to the depth of spotting and information.
4. Engineering has moved to have (or not) discreet units for those AVLBs and general engineers. That will fix the Red Storm issue of anyone can bridge, blow, or remove obstacles. Plus a couple of other options we can't talk about right now.
5. Each unit and its subunits have various sensors and means of seeing terrain, obstacles, and enemy units based on the various sensors each subunit has the weather and the LOS to those targets. While we do cover night (with illumination based on the moon and weather), dawn, dusk, and day settings in a scenario, all of those factors have various levels of impact on the sensors in play. Recon units are better at spotting and identification given the same kit and conditions versus and normal unit.
6. There is a Lost Contact report that can be viewed during the orders phase.

Southern Storm will be the foundation of our Cold War game engine (1950ish-1991ish).

Southern Storm is the first installment of our new Cold War game engine. Basically a ground up rebuild of the Red Storm system. The new game engine is not compatible with Red Storm as too much has changed with data, maps and models to work. We will be going back after release of Southern Storm and working a DLC called Central Storm that will be a rebuild of the Red Storm and Germany Reforged content to the new Cold War game engine standard.

GSRs are now working in the code.

In Red Storm, special ammo runs out on a random chance. That has all been changed in the new game engine that has a much deeper ammo model and round tracking.

For Southern Storm, we are considering what level of support to include in order for players to create maps easily, with a similar look to the game's default graphics. We will continue the current set-up where any bitmap can be turned into a game map through manual setting of values in the Map Value editor.

Red Storm and Southern Front both use hex-based movement. Game maps in Southern Storm are terrain hex bases but have the 1km grid overlay.

Matrix/Slitherine is doing HOW21 on December 14th starting at 9am EST and we will be featured with more gameplay and some Q&A with our Lead Programmer Rob Crandall. Not sure on when our stuff will be shown.

This is excellent news. The one bad thing about sequels is how the original game loses its value quickly. I am glad to hear that they are going to "reforge" Red Storm and Germany Reforged after the release. They can count on me getting those updates as I hate to leave behind content I like.

Thanks for the info!

Below are some bits and pieces of information I found in various threads on the STEAM forum. I paraphrased some of it. Also some of the below information is old so may not be accurate.

Southern Storm will make the UI/UX a lot more flexible for all sorts of screen configurations.

Some of Southern Storm features will be multi-national force scenarios, 4 additional national military forces, Alpine terrain, a much-expanded scenario/campaign editor, new weather model.

Southern Storm will improve the AI on the defense with several overall improvements to make the AI react better to its local situation.

Southern Storm sound and animations have not seen any real changes from Red Storm for a number of reasons. Biggest is our graphics engine. It is not that powerful, and we were breaking it with large scenarios in Red Storm. We have made some changes to our codebase to reduce those issues. We are never going to have 3D units.

Southern Storm will have a way to use just NATO symbols instead of a mix of NATO symbols and silhouettes.

Southern Storm has several LOS fixes and the ability to see into the higher concealment terrain has been reduced. Cover and concealment are going to be independent in Southern Storm.

Southern Storm can split troop carriers into IFVs or APCs. Brads versus M113s. This allows us to have the APCs take a more defensive drop and run/hide instead of a support with fire platform. We may also add in some SOP stuff as to how the IFVs act.

We are planning to factor in types of movement and various modes of breaching in Southern Storm.

We are planning to add a more flexible command delay structure in Southern Storm. If units are given small displacements within the command range of their local HQ, they will move out in a few minutes. This will better reflect a local commander making adjustments within his sphere of influence.
