Hi Everyone:

I am not sure if this was “tactically correct” but in the early opening moves I had the Lex and Yorktown Group near PM when the IJN hit Gili Gili. After a couple of rounds of pounding the poor base by the IJN TF planes (never intended to stop them; just wanted them to not get it for free), I quickly moved my TF near the base, set my fighters to 30% CAP and covered the TF with fighters from PM.

What happened really surprised me. The IJN air groups must have been tired but when I hit them, I sank one CV and a CVL while damaging another CV. When their air strike arrived over my task force, they were met with a wall of fighters from the CAP and PM. I took heavy aircraft losses but escaped to the south without any serious damage! I was amazed considering the experience of my pilots and poor AA ratings of the ships!

Conclusion: Either dumb luck of a beginner or I just discovered the secret to life. Don’t know if this will work again but it sure was fun to get in my hits and not take any in return. Before I went to bed I kissed the AI and thanked her. Of course, she will be hard to live with tomorrow! :)

the use of the CAP from a neighboring base is a very good tactic and in effect adds a carrier to your TF. Luckily the GG CAP was significant because 30% cap over the carriers is rather low but it did give you the escort power you needed to overcome their CAP. There was some risk in it as in all operations but it paid off.
