ORIGINAL: "Gunny" Erwin Given my moderator status at Matrix, I can't give my general impressions on the status of 8.2 changes. Here, I'm just Gunny, so here's what I'm seeing: the team is doing a hell of a job in getting these OOBs fit for what will be the final official Matrix patch. One overriding concern is that the current mech.exe forces certain values in the game to run counter to what one would expect in an absolute historically valued database. Sure you can. Further if you can't give your opinion at Matrix it is because of either an implicit or implied non-disclosure policy and voicing your opinion here is a violation. You are very good at saying "game engine", but if it is a mech.exe issue the "it just feels right" things should be applied across the board formulaicaly and if not it is just a smokescreen for fanboyhood. quote:
ORIGINAL: "Gunny" Erwin This is why we have the FC5/RF4 LMGs. The limitations of the game forced this to be as it is, and still give historically accurate representation in gameplay. This is just one example of the across-the-board changes that were made. Another example is 4.5 rockets--these actually only had a range of 1100 yards, so they were adjusted for on-board rocket-armed boats. We also retained a long-ranged 4.5 rocket for off-board use. Furthermore, I requested that we quote sources for our changes in weapons data. These will be provided with the patch. What we've done isn't based on fantasy or pulled-out-of-a-hat data. This is based on hard research, and it has made me furious that my teammates' work has been denigrated and ridiculed sight unseen. Let's work through a logic conundrum. Previous scrubs were done in the light of day and vetting changes and sources were openly posted BEFORE changes were made. For some reason the happy little OOB smythes now need us to fall for your smokescreen so the "geniuses" can work in 'peace'. Hey "Gunny" all I want to know and more and more people are joining everyday in wondering is why the 37 mike mike has as many identities and values as Imelda Marcos had shoes when it is the same licensed Bofors gun? Something tells me someone nailed it on the head when they said you are pumping up tech specs to reflect training and morale matters. If the Bofors is one and the Germans rock of course the German Bofors is 1.275 of the baseline. Uh-uh and of course since we are now in candyland the German equipment will be toned down later in the war to reflect their diminishing skills? Oh darn we never make it to THAT point do we? quote:
ORIGINAL: "Gunny" Erwin Forgive me, but I gotta get this off my chest. The 8.2 OOB patch will be the best ever done, but some players' pet peeves will not be addressed. All I can say is, tough sh it. We're gonna give you our best effort, as a result of our research and the information we've gathered from the forums. This is a group effort--the entire community has played a part, and guys like Renaud have rendered invaluable assistance in doing their own independent research. I don't give a damn whether it "feels right" or not. All I want is for it to "be right" within the confines of the game engine. You were there? You have been to boot camp and know what the various ARs, lessons learned sheets, and Unit histories say? Can you show me a source that says a manpack LMG is superior in any way to a tripod mounted one other than mobility? You can find a book to say just about anything, yet another reason for open declaration of sources prior to the OOBs being "official". quote:
ORIGINAL: "Gunny" Erwin Now, when 8.2 is released, I expect some whining, as this won't meet other players' preconceived notions of "what should be". Sorry, can't help you. Our job is to show "how it was", to the best of our ability. This is our mission. Again you were there, been to boot camp or have ever given a lessons learned brief? It seems to a lot of us we are seeing a Bizzaro world rendition of the TV show combat not a realistic simulation of the evolution of combined arms operations in WW2. "Missions" don't meet their goals all the time, and this is known as "failure". "It just feels right" is the dissenters battlecry for what MUST be the primary source in their eyes not any concrete one that would stand muster. Such radical changes are being made that the assertion MUST be that every version of SPWAW prior to 8.0 was a conspiracy to purposely screw things up. Care to run that assertion openly by David Heath or Paul Vebber? quote:
ORIGINAL: "Gunny" Erwin This team is accused of being "Secretive Wizards and Gurus". Well, that's partially true. Some of the team members are not regular forum posters. They work in relative anonymity, but that doesn't take away from their value to SPWaW. Yeah they have the time to come up with tack busting MGs and magic T-34s but not enough time to give briefs on changes or sources..... "Okay".... ;) quote:
ORIGINAL: "Gunny" Erwin I can't say any of this at Matrix, but you guys know me, and I believe in what we are doing. Thanks for letting me rant & rave on this. With best regards to all my friends here, Glenn Hey no problem I have copied and pasted this for future use. Please continue to thump your chest and justify the butchering of the OOBs and the morphing of the game into "what it really really really was" based on the observations of a bunch of people who weren't there. You have obviously proven over time the awesome reasoning behind the "Dead poet's society". Well no you haven't but it is indicative of what happens when light is shed on a cesspool what happens to the vermin nearby. They get pretty enraged then run for cover. People are going to vote with their feet come 8.2 unless I miss my guess. This would not be horrible for matrix if they were voting with their feet for CL/CA, but the majority seem to be heading over to CAMO and their reasonable OOBs. regards, sven http://spwaw.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=943&postdays=0&postorder=asc&&start=0
