No, I have only done it to myself. I had played a KP game with Thor Eikermann and then we switched sides. The game would not accept the fact that I was now the German player and when I tried loading my turn, the program keep saying the turn had to be played on a registered machine. Had to break through the security just to play my turn. And of course, since the program still considered me to be the Soviet player I could load Thor's turn. He and I agreed to continue the game in a non-secure mode since he did not want to re-start as the Soviets a third time.

Hmmm, seems like using a different name for each game would have been a lot easier.

Carl, I think thats a really irresponsible post mate. You had already reported that bug to me and I told you I was passing it onto SSG. All you have done now - if what you are saying is correct - is told people how to defeat the security provisions. Thanks. If I was a Mod around here I would delete and edit your post.

He didnt say anything derogatory against another person Nickel your own eyes tell you that. And yes free speech is allowed.. Im not a mod on this board I dont decide the rules here.. but if it was posted on Run5 then yes I would edit the post because I dont think its in the spirit of the game. Esp when the bug had already been reported privately.

I am one who doesn't tolerate censorship in any way. I think what Rob is talking about is not censorship, but in using one's head.

If this was reported to him on the QT, and it was going to be forwarded to SSG, then I agree that it wasn't in the best interest to repeat it here. Believe it or not, there are always people out there who will take advantage of a situation. This has nothing to do with free speech, but rather in judgment.

After all, what purpose does it serve to tell the "world", when it is the developers who should and are in the process of being made aware of it? We are not talking about some security hole in a Microsoft product or some other issue that can effect security, which in that case, I would support the spreading of the information.

Let's wait and see what SSG's response is to this first!

This my is rub on this one. I agree that if this matter is being handled on the QT with the designers then perhaps it should not have been posted. I don't play SPWaW, but I have been following some of what's going on over there. This feels like the same kind of stuff to me.

Have no idea about the SPWaW issue but let me explain the real ugliness in this.

It's all about confidence and comraderie. If the game is perceived to have adequate PBEM security then everyone has confidence that their opponent's turn is 100% pure. Just because a good player, like say yourself Nickel, puts together 4 or 5 super turns in a row its not a question... especially for the players who are still learning how to play.

Now that security may be perceived as flawed there will probably be a doubt in some players minds... (i.e. is my opponent really than much better than me? i.e. ...did Nickel peek or is he just really that good?) Destruction of the 100% confidence is the part that sucks in all this. The lack of trust issue took a lot of fun out of playing the original TAO PBEM for me.

Personally I would never have thought thru the process described above; not in 1000 years of playing the game. Doubt that many others would have either. A v1.12 patch for something I wasn't aware of wouldn't have bothered me at all.

They have been locking down threads inSPWaW, because the discussion got rather heated. I am not saying what happened there is right or wrong. The gist of my posts was directed at the perceived threat of censorship.
Regarding the security issue, I am fairly new to PBEM. I find it interesting that so much discussion, particularly in some parts of the KP community, goes towards this issue. I think that the improvements like FOW that can be achieved in PC gaming is great. I guess having played board games for so long, the idea that the opponent knows what my troops are doing just doesn't bother me. I have always thought that best tactics will tell the tale regarding game skill. Apparently for some this is a big issue, which leads to some other thoughts on my part. I suppose I can understand that this could really bother some players. I do play other games and belong to a ladder. The perspective there is that "don't cheat cause you suck if you do." The members there don't seem so preoccupied with this issue.

Couldn't agree with your gaming philosophy more When I spend my time on a game I want to enjoy it!... the winning and losing isn't the main focus.
