Welcome back

I'd say you want to visit www.wargamer.com and their Steel Panthers section.

Yeah, SP:MBT is your best bet. Very easy to get going (playwise) if you have any Steel Panthers background, and many improvements over the original sp2/3. As for Matrix dropping it, it is a shame. However, a modern set of Combat Leader following the East front module is ample compensation (more like many times better), at least for me.

It works fine on XP

The only know hardware issue is that if you have a Geforce 2 or 3 MX video card your **** out of luck.
The game refuses to run on those cards.
Of course you will find the odd setup which will cause problems for the game. Bit overall to be a DOS program it runs well.

I have it installed on two machines with XP and I didnt even follow the set up instuctions. I have a third install on a Windows 98 machine and I had to use a few tweaks but it works now.

Both SPMBT and SPWW2 are good games.

But one thing is a fact, no matter if you can or can't get them to run on XP (I can by the way), they are really quite similar to their roots in how they play along with a host of other qualities that make Steel Panthers World at War actually a different enough experience.

It is better to call SPWW2, Steel Panthers 1b and SPMBT, Steel Panthers 2b.

Steel Panthers World at War would be better referred to as Steel Panthers 4. Because it is the game completely re invented.

That's not a knock on SPWW2 or SPMBT. Just giving SPWaW its due for it's achievement.

It would be nice if it had a modern variant, but it was just never within the range of the software to do it right.

I was able to play SP MBT on windows 98,but on XP,it all works except the mouse just draaaagggsss across the screen. Can't figure out how to correct it..I have a high end Dell and have tried to emulate Windows 95 and 98,no luck..Somebody suggested changing the "scroll speed",but I cannot find that option on that game.I know it is on SPWAW,but I can't find it on SP MBT,nor SP WW2..
(I like SP WW2 just for the OOB differences.)

The mouse fix is in the game ini file.

And like as with ini files, its a string of numbers that won't mean a great lot to a clod like me hehe.

But it is possible to find it.

The problem, is the "fix" is only really a partial one.

There is simply no substitute for running a game in a proper environment sometimes.

SPMBT and SPWW2 "can" run in XP, but they most certainly don't care for it.

Anyone serious wanting to play those two, should basically do what I have decided to do, get yourself a piece of garbage computer to run it on. Yeah I said garbage. Odds are the system you are looking for, will be found at a flea market and be worth next to nothing.

All this case will need is a crummy motherboard, almost no ram, almost no hard drive, a cd rom drive that will suck, and 98SE loaded on it.
Then you connect your mouse monitor and keyboard to it.

Remember, you are only getting it to run a couple of old wargames eh. So don't fret over whether it's a waste of space paperweight.

I plan to have mine sit on the floor under the desk, and serve as a foot rest too.

That was exactly the approach I used, Les. Just pick up a KVM switch for around $40.00 and you can run both PC's off of the same keyboard, mouse and monitor.

This is the one I use.

The game worked better for me on my two High End systems and I had to use alot of fixes to get it to work on my POS windows 98 machine.
Weird

Dont waste your time and buy a gaint paper weight. Get a simple program like partition magic. or acronis partition etc.

Partition a small 1 Gz as a drive, eg d , install win98se on with every thing min.

Now you can boot both win xp and win98se. Simple?

That what I do for my computer .

I've said this every time this issue comes up. I'm running XP on a HP XT931 computer, and have had no trouble WHATSOEVER running ANY variant of Steel Panthers. In fact we had to get an overhaul to some of the guts of the computer, and even after that I had nothing out of the ordinary with SP. I can even play AOR with no problems.

Thanks,
Matt.

My probem running Spmbt and SpwwII isn't really XP, but the fact that my new Dell PC's video card doesn't recognize Vesa graphics. No workaround for that except a different video card

My older Win98se PC has no problems with it as long as I configure the shortcut correctly.

IIRC, isn't there a workaround about the vesa graphics?

I don't think my card supports it either....

Try looking for a vesa graphics emulator

It pays to get a nice graphics card with all the bells and whistels
Mine runs eveything from old EGA graphics to whatever you find in the latest 3-d FPS

Make sure you follow the instructions step by step. They seemed simple enough to me so I just read through them and then went to work doing it without ever referring back to them. Well after repeated atempts and it still not working I basically said "screw this crap" and gave up.

Then about 2 months later I decided to give it another try. So after printing out the directions and following them step by step, what do you know, it worked just fine.

There's a program called MOUSECTL.COM which (use google to find it) which accelerates the mouse in DOS programs. IIRC you run the program from a prompt like this:

mousectl 1 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 spmbt.exe

MOUSECTL.COM must be in the spmbt directory. The numbers denote acceleration, try a couple of different values. I don't think you have to write them all.

Next, just run SPMBT from the same prompt.

Thanks Jim, going to see if my tech smart buddy can help me round that thingy up maybe.

As for the partition notion, been there done that.

Fact one, even with partitioning, it still uses up space.
Fact two 98SE is garbage, and basically no longer welcome on "the good computer" hehe

When you consider that an old clunker is often worth next to nothing, it's not such a bad option.
In my case I am lucky, as my friend is basically giving me something like a low calibre P2 system on "extended loan", or in other words, he retains the right to say its his, but odds are he could care less as long as I don't throw it away hehe.

Currently I just don't have the space on the "good computer". I use it to much for video processing.

There are new versions of both SPWW2 and SPMBT coming soon. I have a particular interest in map making, and the new terrain etc that come with the new versions are seriously cool stuff.

I can assure that Wulfir makes some cool maps. Hey Wulfir, do you remember the Groznij map? ;). Do you still have your maps on the Yahoo group?

Hiya Artur, yeah I remember I got my ass kicked.

The maps are gone from the yahoo group to make room for other stuff. A few might show up in the coming versions though... Btw, drop me a mail if you want more, I have 50-60 (mostly unpublished) maps, mainly 80x100. The majority comes from a 34 scenario SPWW2 campaign, stretching from Omaha beach to Magdeburg (i.e. bocage maps of various locations in Normandy, summer maps of France, autumn-winter maps of Belgium (Ardennes) and spring maps of Germany.

Playing on custom maps is more fun!

Wulfir,

Maybe you could put them up on SPCammoFiles group.
Keep on making the beauties

Artur.

If you need a place for those maps, just let me know.

Question. Are these maps usable with SPMBT?

As far as I know maps are interchangable between SPWW2 and SPMBT.

Hi!

Yes, these maps work with SPMBT. I have been told a few will be included in the coming versions of MBT, most of the others will be with SPWW2. Some will probably not make it, as of now I don't know exactly which ones.

Hei there!

Got both Steel Panthers II and Steel Panthers MBT today. It IS techincally running rather well on XP here... but only for a little while. After having spent like half a minute in the buying screen or, if I'm fast enough, in the map deploying, the game just freezes. Repeating the process only produces the same results. I have already read through the install guide and the problem solving solutions offered above, to no result...

Is there anyone who can shed some light on this here? (Somehow it'd seem that Steel Panthers products have an antipathy for me... LV refuses to go further than Surprise at Dubno stubbornly now...)
