There are lots of "Zulu", "Kelly's Heroes", "Tora Tora Tora", "Stalingrad" and "Battle of Britain", which I love.

I want to add three films I did not see mentioned, the first two with the great George C. Scott:

- Patton.
- Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

And one italian film:

- The Profession of Arms (Imdb)

About condottieri in the Renaissance, I have yet to watch it again, but for what I remember it was stunning.

Excellent movie, but for me no cigar as best ever. More of a CIA intel movie. I actually liked Lincoln better.

DUH! Cross of Iron(starring me) should be everyone's favorite war movie. It should be required watching, with a test, for new Matrix forum members.

Since my original 2004 posting, I've gotta add a fourth choice, which is the HBO miniseries "The Pacific". The USMC of WWII gets the attention it deserves (nothwithstanding the classic "Sands of Iwo Jima"). This series has garnered mixed reviews from the wargaming community, but this is mostly due to intrinsic interest in the campaign it portrays. To this USMC fan, it serves as a perfect complement to "Band of Brothers". Granted, it covers a whole division rather than a single company, so the time period is expanded from Dec 1941 to late 1945. The DVD set is a frequently revisited part of my video collection.

I love Cross of Iron, but would be in the bottom half of my top 10 - Best bit about the film is the music at the start

36 Hours. That is a movie I had forgotten about. Time to watch it again. Thanks for the reminder.

Windtalkers was the most accurate war film ever. Guys, I'm kidding. It was a joke. Steiner, put down that rock! OUCH!!!

Hell is for Heroes, not a bad one. Ole Steve at his best. Davy Crockett was his Platoon Sgt(Fess Parker).

I thought Pearl Harbor was a pretty decent film, and Ben Affleck was brilliant in it!

At this point I must make a decision about you and that post. You are either A. Insane or B. Insane.

I will let you know my diagnosis later.

I can't resist putting my votes in:

1) Wings. In 1927, they didn't have CGI. Those are real planes, with cameras mounted on them flown by real stunt pilots! Also, if you think product placement is new, watch Gary Cooper's scene.
2) Glory. The other mentions say it all about this one.
3) In Harm's Way. Yeah, a bit corny some ways, but still one of my favorites for viewing around December 7th.

I guess you guys just don't recognise historical accuracy when you see it - oh and not to mention great scriptwriting and even greater acting.....oh well....
