Tom "Reb" Hammond, known around SP sites for a long time passed away Tuesday Night in Chattanooga Tennessee. Tom was a good friend to me. A robust happy man with a big charming smile, he and David "Soundman" Turner visited me at my home a couple of years ago. We had a great time together. Tom was a hard worker and tester on both MCNA and MC-Watchtower. I believe he helped Brent with MCLV also. This year I had the pleasure to drive up to his home and play my first miniatures battle in years. Tom was referee and I took on the Sound Man. It was a Civil War battle and great fun. Tom died from cancer, which had spread to his bones. It all happened way too fast. Maybe for Tom that was the best. I feel his loss more than I can say. Two good friends and my Son--in-Law have fallen victim to this insidious beast in this year of 2001. Tom will be missed. He was a guy who laughed a lot. He was a great gamer, military historian and a very good friend. Let us remember his two Sons and all those who loved him. They are hurting right now. Wild Bill

Tom worked on my team as we developed the Operation Watchtower Mega Campaign. He was a real gamer, testing scenarios between chemo treatments. He believed the cancer was responding to treatment. Unfortunately, the disease had other plans. Tom will be missed.

My condolences, this beast took my Father too, I hope that one day the riddle of it will be solved, it takes far too many good people....

Dear Wild Bill,
I've been away for a while but still playing with earnest. I wanted to post a message saying how cool it was to read about Matrix Games in PCGamer. Yours was the first thread to be read and I want to tell you how sorry I am.
My Mom's fighting the beast too and my thoughts every day are filled with hope that a cure will be found. One thing I learned very early in life is never to give up hope so I won't. Right now, my hopes are for your comfort and that the memories of a dear friend will bring you just that.
God bless you,
Mike PS: Whether I'm away for a day or a year, one thing I'll always remember is the kindness, consideration, help, and encouragement I and others have received within this forum, especially from you. Again: God bless you.

StukaDawg, good to have you with us again. You've been missed. I want to thank you very much for your kind thoughts...and for the encouragement. It makes it all worthwhile. And I'm sure they feel that hug, AmmoSarge! I still believe compassion and caring reach beyond the physical and touch lives that may be distant and unknown to us. And to the rest of my comrades in arms who have posted here with words of condolence and sympathy, I thank you on behalf of the bereaved ones. We too are bereaved by the loss of such a good friend and supporter of the hobby. I'll pass all your sentiments to the family. Thank you all. WB [ November 16, 2001: Message edited by: Wild Bill ]

I like to believe into a fable...
He is now up there , high in the sky..he is very very busy because now God is showing him all the secrets of the world...what happened in the past..what there will be in the future..he is now realizing the incredible that stands after this life on Earth..it's something he could never
suppose before..and now he is enjoying that
place...it's Paradise..and he knows he can't tell
us how much he is happy now..
He now has the power to travel across time and space..he can see our faces and thoughts although
he can't speak to us...
He would say "do not be sad for me cause I am very happy now.." but we would not hear his voice... I don't know if my fable is true..one day me too
I will understand better...as for now I find
this can be the best thing to believe at.. Next to you WB !

...my sincere sympathies... all away all away all away all
draggin 'em all away
down into down with
a scream or a sigh
a smile and a nod,
quiet or in full cry
here comes Death
draggin 'em all away sneak around corners
up out of grates
eagles and the ants,
spiders and the cormorants,
draggin 'em all away Damn you Death,
I piss on your shoes,
Father of Blues
get offa my land
or I'll run you through! And who'll be there to
get you when I do? Never could say goodbye
like it had any kind
of final rectitude,
any essential rightness.
Whatever's right, yeah?
Whatever's true -
later, not farewell.
As in, see you around. Death is senseless
unless we just pop over
into some other place,
along with the eagles and ants,
the spiders and cormorants,
the destitute and shameless,
the brightest and best -
born to be banished
banished to be born. One stood in the moonlight
One stood out in the crowd
One stood under star blue sky
his daydream turned up loud. How did this come to pass?
Don't gimme no don't gimme no . . .
this tractor don't run on horseshit,
Deboree, just natural gas. Some folk come
to stir it up
and when it's stirred
they split - simple as that. Robert Hunter

Although I didn´t know the man, I´m sorry for his family and you, Wild Bill, if you´ve lost so much because of this one disease...Two of my grandparents passed away to it last year...
It´s such a killer, but I hope and know that there will be more effective cures for it in the future, like there will be even better cures for cardiological and circulatory diseases... Ruxien, while it´s ok to fantasize, that´s some heavy.... Ahem, I´d better leave it at that before I rouse up the religious folks in a totally inappropriate board and thread. Anyone can believe in anything they want, even if it´s the Great Cheese Grater of Peace, but if only people would stop fighting over who´s right... Ahem, sorry again and my condolences.... Sami

"I am diminished by the death of any man ...." - particularly one who meant a great deal to the gaming community and was friend to many of us, though I did not know him personally I certainly did know OF him. He hs gone to that great boardgame in the sky and may all his die rolls be "D-Elim", what could be better for a real gamer? Condolences to the family. Bing

Bill, What can I say? Condolences to family and friends. It's always sad to lose our close ones, and even more so when it's too soon (isn't it always?). By coincidence, Gabrielle's 'Out of Reach' started playing on my list just as I started reading this post. How appropriate. Regards,
Belisarius

My sincerest condolences to family & friends of Mr. Hammond. I never had the pleasure of making his acquaintence, but the loss of any one who was a member of the gaming community is a loss for all of us, whether directly or indirectly. To those of you who knew him, you do him honor by your high regards, so perhaps the legacy of Mr. Hammond's contributions will still touch those of us who didn't have the privelege of knowing him personally. Glenn.

I lost my Dad to cancer and have been in remission myself for 2 years now> As a survivor of this horrible affliction I can only offer my heartfelt sympathy to Tom's family and continue to support the American Cancer Society.
