BIG Battle!
funkiwi's Soviets vs Mangudai's Americans in the Ukraine Fog. It's 11,000pts each. So far Soviet 150mm battery has fallen heavily on the US start line. That will teach them to mill about on the only road in the area! US recon has now engaged SO recon.

Alright men its time to attack those commie bastards. The Germans took this area fairly quickly so I expect even better from you. We'll use this fog to our advantage and get in close where our superior infantry will make the difference.

We sent out a platoon of Mech Engineers to lay some mines with a greyhound an M20 scout and a .50 cal Jeep for support and recon. But, the Russian cavalry discovered them and a platoon of T-44s rolled up to destroy our armored cars. Pull back engineers!

In the south we are taking casualties from artillery. 150mm's are not nice, but 203s and 160mm mortars are even worse. Keep your heads down. When it comes to direct fire we're doing good. The enemy has lost a few ATcars, halftracks, two or three infantry squads, some leg infantry, some with motorcycles, and an AT gun. Those dumb Ruskies are retreating toward our lines where we can pick 'em off in detail. Now you men remember which way is which, don't retreat toward the enemy. I hope you remember that.

I understand how unfair it feels to miss so many shots like that, it's happened to me plenty. You're not gonna be happy this turn. I've siezed the initiative on the north and south flanks, destroying a number of your units. A couple of sneaky Rangers infiltrated and sneak attacked an AA gun and a FO on a hilltop.

In the center you're winning slightly. I've lost three tanks there, and you only lost two. My infantry is losing morale and falling back, fortunatelly in the proper direction. Those OT-34 Flametanks are too alert, and they hit me hard with opfire. We'll see if some artillery can change that. Allow me to introduce USMC F* come into the fog and play.

Except there's a technical hitch and the game isn't starting at this end.

Other than that, I can't believe how inaccurate my tanks are! And can somebody tell me why my idiots keep 'pulling forward' rather than 'back'??

How can a commander plan for such incompetence?

I had to replay the turn because of a technical problem. My last post is mostly still accurate, but disregard what I said about the OT-34 flametanks. They went down in flames this time

I just got back from my two week camping trip in colorado. Man it was great!

Your fire doesn't look so inaccurate from the recieving end. But, it's true my units are sharper shooters.

Your main attack in the south has developed into a well defined salient. My guys along the front of the salient are hurting but holding, at least for now. After the massive artillery barage of the previous turn, my infantry charged the north flank of the salient inflicting heavy casualties. Your picket line in the middle has plenty of gaps, and besides there is nothing there that my units can't brush aside. I advance across the entire north half of the map. The highlights this turn were an ISU-172 knocked out by an 81mm mortar that hit the bottom! It must have had a precarious position on that slope and been flipped over. The other highlight was a squad of marines who had a halftrack shot from under them by a 90mm shell at point blank range and they still had the balls to hit the ground fighting. Gotta love that corps! Medals all around my dear boys.

Don't talk about finishing yet. Most of the special ops guys haven't even arrived yet.

In funkiwi's backfield my rangers are knocking out a few AT guns, but having difficulty with his MG's. He also has armored reserves which are making my rangers pay dearly. Where are the Russian special ops? Don't they want to discover the surprises waiting in my backfield? It's still early, I bet they're coming.

There is so much more I would like to say, that would interest third parties reading this, but I can't because it would affect the game. I've figured out many important things about funkiwi's strategy, but I can't let him know what I know. What I can say is this, he appears to have decided to commit his full force on the southern half of the map before the game even began. In the north he arranged a diversion which prevented me from knowing this for about a turn or two but not long enough. His main force followed right on the heels of his recon, before they really knew what they were getting into. My gambit was much more flexible. Since we are playing with enourmous recources (10,000 pts) and the map is very foggy, I decided to cover the entire front with infantry and advance slowly with plenty of manuverable reserves. That is part of my strategy anyway, you'll have to guess the rest.

hi guys, if ur troops are retreating forward it's a map issue with retreat hexes being on the wrong side of the map, this can also mean reinforcement hexes being on the wrong side also. This is a bugbear I don't know how to fix, but I'm sure someone must do... somewhere!

Yeah, it can be fixed in the scenario editor. But that will not help us now. I think Wild Bill made this map Ukraine Fog. When you play it Germany vs. Russia, the Russians are on the right side. funkiwi's Ruskies deployed on the left vs my USA. No explaining why.
