I also still find this game really enjoyable. The excitment is still there and we are now at a point in the game where I am now starting to take offensive actions, which is so far proving to be somewhat more dangerous for my own troops than it is for Luskan's. This game, not just this PBEM, but this game still holds all of my attention, and I don't have any other games on my HD. (Even UV has been removed). Like Luskan I still find myself sitting in the traffic driving to work formulating a plan as to how I might take this Island, or how could I draw out his CVs? Nope I love this game, and still find it as interesting and exciting as I did on the first day.

The invasion of Attu in the Northern Pacific was a hurried operation. I loaded up 3 very green US army RCT's and one Brigade of Canada's finest and went charging in, (well almost, the place had been bombed and bombarded for nearly a week). The landings went fine but the reports of high casualties proved to be untrue, as when I looked at each unit it's disruption was low and they still had a high attack value. So the casualties were somewhat mis-leading. I was able to quickly win the Island but for the last four days have been fighting a nasty little battle to completely wipe out the remaining japs of which there are only 1700, facing some 17000 of my troops. I will admit the the single biggest mistake was not having the pre-points up before I landed, but I was also using this to assult to mask another move way down south.

A fast TF loaded with eager troops nets me the admiralty Island (which was undefended). My plan to encircle and isolate Rabal is almost complete and therefor trapping some 40,000 japs who will be left to starve till the wars's end. I have almost won the battle for the southwest pacific, and the south pacific, it was simply a question of who moved the fastest and I won the race after stalling Luskan in the DEI with false reports of how I was going to fight him there with everything I had. PNG is mine as is the soloman's chain of Islands. Next it will be into the central pacific and then onto Japan itself !

He neglected to tell you the cost in ships! Taking Admiralty island - was a nice move, but too big of a "leap". His fighters weren't on cap and so my betties smacked up his fast transport TF, torpedoeing a few dds, a cl and a CA. All heavily damaged, although none will sink I think.

Then the night after the Attu invasion my daring surface combat group of 1 ca, 1 cl and 7 dds swept in from the sea, and took part in about 10 separate battles against Raver's armada of PT boats. After beating them all back for no loss, sinking about 10 of the damned things, my ships finally closed with Raver's AP TF and torpedoed and sank 4 of them in a lovely long lance attack before running for home.

I have one DD damaged by a torpedo in the aftermath fight with PT boats - but she made it home already.

Bah ! Whats a few DDs when I now control ALL of the SLOCs to Rabal? Ha! And Luskan has some 40,000 troops there that he only get of using a sub. The place is locked down! I would say that that is well worth the loss/damage of a few DDs and a CA. As for ratbrains sweep of the Attu invasion force, well yes I did loose some PTs, but it is awfully hard to ship anything else while you have to worry about a sea full of PTs.

Luskan is still hiding from my CVs, I now have three CV TFs sweeping different areas, but not a sign. I'm thinking of a colour and it looks and smells like Yellow.

A lot has happened.

First, Raver invaded the Admiralty Islands with a little force - and was then rather shocked when I couner invaded with 4X the number of troops. Next turn they're due to sweep the infidel off the island forever.

Second, he got impatient (wait long enough and Raver will always get premature). He sent Enterprise and Hornet (alone) to hit Kwajalein. *Luskan now pauses while allied WITP players who have already done this agains him wince in pain* He smacked one of my ASW TF's to hell, but then the betties launched, with a full squadron of zeros flying escort.

These guys aren't the fruit loops doing battle over Rangoon, or the newbies learning how to use velcro in Japan. These guys are the first string and they proved their worth.

While Raver's planes were pounding my little tf my betties put 2 torps into Enterprise and 3 into hornet - and Raver has sent me some jpegs to confirm that both flight decks were put out of action. So what happened to 180 of Raver's CV aircraft? They had nowhere to land is what! The result, all aircrews gone except 1 or 2 pilots and planes on those CVs (every single one of Raver's planes launched that turn and came home to find their CV's out of action).

Was a bug here with the ole Jap player combat report not matching the allied player combat report - so Raver couldn't understand how Enterprise got damaged when his CR didn't show her ever getting hit.

Raver has also had the disappearing division loading on a transport bug - which we may solve I think.

However all that aside, here is the Combat report. Stay tuned sports fans - Raver's blood is up (and in the water around Kwajalein).

They betties found Hornet (and Enterprise) and decided to put Hornet out of her misery. 1st Allied CV sunk for the game (Hermes doesn't count).

Enterprise seems to have escaped her sister ship's fate and will escape - she's made good distance on her way back to johnson or pearl - next turn she'll be too far for me to catch her.

At Admiralty some disappointment where Raver's b17s and bombardments suppressed my troops entirely. Sooner or later those b17s will drop their bombs on the wrong side of the island and blow Raver's own troops up.

Bugger! The Kwajalein attack went all wrong. It was simply meant to be a combat training cruise against what I thought was a lightly defended Island. I must admitt to not being too worried when I saw *only* 30 bettys coming in. Little did I know that these guys were Luskan's first string and they did their job well. Hornet is now sitting in Davy Jone's locker, and I have lost all of my air groups from Enterprise. A simple training mission that went bad. Butb on the bright side I have six new carriers being delivered at the rate od one every ten days over the next seventy days, plus Hornet will be re-born as an Essex Class CV in the next year or so.

The battle for the Admiralty Islands is by no means over, as I have overwhelming control of the air with at least 400+ bombers raining hell down upon Luskan's foolish gamble to retake the Admiralty Islands. This turn I will have dive bombers in range to also cover the Admiralty Islands which will further add to Luskan's pain.

Meanwhile the wounded Enterprise limps home to PH, I think that she will be in dry dock for at least the next 3 to 4 months.

Vice Admiral Yamamoto aboard the Hiei swept into Lae last night and smacked an enemy minesweeper and large transport to hell (the transport had a few of Raver's troops aboard).

Unfortunately he missed the main prize - the big enemy transport TF wiht lots of escorts. On the other hand, the beauforts that launched at him couldn't find him sitting in their own harbour - most of Raver's green pilots got horribly lost and confused and went back to base. Hiei still copped two torpedoes, but she can still make steam quite fast and the fires will be out by next turn.

Raver will have moved the juicy transport TF I was going for however, so I'm happy to call it a day for the damaged BB and her escorts and retire her for another foray later.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Luskan

Well in one of the few lucky breaks I've had, the TF that Luskan was talking about was empty, mainly due to a cock-up on my part. I'm still pissed at the loss of Hornet, to the point that I want to hit something. Loosing a carrier in a carrier fight I can deal with, but to loose to a few clapped-out betties really bites

OTOH such bold advances this early in the game still means that Luskan is dire straits, problem is he does not know or act like it and from time to time this is going to cause me pain.

Another event filled turn. First off, my ships which attacked Lae alst turn didn't exactly relax for a turn - they went for a cruise over to Admiralty and found Raver's surface combat/bombardment/fast combat group there. Mostly British ships, and lets face it, they just don't cut it against battle hardened japs!

First off I put a long lance through the leander, and then 3 8 inch shell hits into Achilles and that was the pretty much the end of the fighting. Admiral Yamamoto capitolised on surprising the poms and he lost 1 dd, and had one CA damaged for sinking 2 CL, 5 dd, and damaging 1CL and a few DD bad enough they should sink.

I'm thrilled at the result, and then Raver does the obvious, he goes for Rangoon like a cane toad on a golf tee. Unfortunately, I was SO expecting it. I lost 90 planes on the ground. Oh well, he lost 120 in the air - and the best part is since I've dispersed my planes across several nearby airfields, and have massive supply and engineer groups ready to go Rangoon will be operational again next turn. If Raver sends them again next turn I'll repeat the slaughter.

My best squadron is the F2/3rd - which has 170 kills now. However most pilots there have 7-9 kills. The AVG has fought as long as the F2/3rd, and although I've culled their ranks over and over and over, their leader has about 22 kills I think. Raver should post it.

Enjoy.

The AVG now has 174 kills on their tally board. I'll have to have a look at who is the higest scorer but I an sure it is in the region of 20 +

I am now hitting Rangoon at night with nothing going up against me, intel says that the airfield is closed, but I am not going to press that issue till after a few more days of night attacks.

You'll never close Rangoon with night attacks.

This turn saw a surprise CV on CV battle. I got overconfident, and there is lots of blood in the water now. Fortunately the battle wasn't a complete loss - although I would have liked to have hit first. The bonus I got by sinking hornet just got negated.

I wanted to sink Enterprise. I knew she was slowed down by her damage, and I knew her flight decks were out of operation. I also knew that Raver was conducting ops down at Admiralty - and I was certain that he would have CVs down in the solomons.

So I ordered Admiral Yamada (previously of Bay of Bengal fame) to take command of the Reserve Carrier Division at Tokyo. These 3 CVs, Hiryu, Soryu and Shokaku were my fastest CVs. All my CV squadrons were at full capacity - so the pilots are all first calibre elite - but these CVs had the benefit of 0 sys damage, making them very fast indeed.

The reserve CV division steamed from Tokyo as fast as they could, refuelling at my base at Marcus Island on the way to try and intercept damaged Enterprise (who's speed and course I estimated in the two turns after her damage due to good sightings and intel from my search aircraft).

Yamada had planned to make his intercept just shy of Johnson Island. What I didn't expect was for him to Intercept the entire freaking Allied CV fleet sitting just off the island.

Both sides launched and the yanks launched first from Lexington and Saratoga - and they missed Hiryu completely, but made sure that Soryu and Shokaku were both going to sink. My planes found the allied CVs blew Lexington out of the water, and then bruised Saratoga. The damage to her flight decks put her out of action - and might just be enough to sink her.

All my planes then landed aboard the Hiryu, overcrowding her to the point that she could no longer launch. The second wave of enemy planes that afternoon (from johnson island airbase, or another CV at johnson I am unsure of) finished her and she went down with over 70 planes and pilots aboard. Hiryu and I had to scuttle Shokaku rather than let the yanks finish her.

So in the last week of play I have sunk Hornet and Lexington, crippled Saratoga and damaged Enterprise, for the loss of Hiryu, Soryu and Shokaku. A fairly even trade I guess - since it will put Raver's invasion timetables back a fair way now that my flight deck space outnumbers his (for at least 6 months). On the other hand, allied fanboys will be the first to point out that when Raver's damaged CVs are operational again, and he gets his replacements, he'll outnumber me so far as so it won't even matter.

If I'd won a crushing victory here instead of a draw (or a slight loss not counting Hornet) this game would have taken a helluva turn.

Enjoy.

Well no one could have been more surprised by what happened last turn than I !

After the loss of the Hornet I decided to gather my strength of CVs and rather than loose a couple of Day's steaming time back to Pearl, I choose to use Johnston Island as the rallypoint more on whim than for any strategic reason. It was there that I was going to gather my thoughts as well as my strength to hit back.
After bunkering the four fleet CVs and the newer CVE Nassu were sent speeding north west when it was discovered that a jap CV TFad been sighted. To say that I was surprised is an understatement. Now remeber at this point I didn't know how many jap CVs there were, it could have been 2, 4 or even 6, I just didn't know, as so held my breath as the first strike was launched. HITS! Multi hits on wo of his carriers! Now I had to brace for the exchange, and whe it can it was heavy. First the poor Lex was targeted, and then he Sara. The lex fought hard but was too deeply wounded to survive and with a number of holes in her side soon sank. But the Sara's crew put in a mamoth effort, and she is limping towards Pearl. Her fate is still in the balance, but she is steaming at six knots and the flooding and fires seem to be under control. With some 76% damage I think that she will be in port for many many months and there is a vaild call to simply scuttle her and wait for a newer essex class to take her place, but pride will not allow me to do that.

An interesting fight but with the loss of the hornet, the Lex and with the Sara out of the fight for many months, this round will go to Luskan, but at a great cost to him. I now have only 3 fleet CVs plus one CVE, so my offensive capabilities have been blunted, but so has Luskan's.

Raver is going to add to his poiunts score - this turn his cvs mopped up my escorts. Last turn he spotted my support tanker fleet steaming from Wake - they refueleld this turn so didn't run far - and even if I outfox him - he has the speed, fuel and extra range (from planes) to mean in 3 turns he'll add them to his tally bag.

Let this be a lesson - NEVER send your tankers so far from Japan/friendly airbase that they can't run home if the CVs they were supporting get sunk.

I'm hoping Raver has to retrn to Pearl to refuel - will be give me 4 turns which I can move my tankers from where they are to between Wake and Marcus. Much safer.

A few days have now passed since the CV battle and I let Luskan's tankers off the hook, mainly because I coudn't see what was further east. It would not be unlike Luskan to have a trap waiting for me and so in the end I was content with my haul of three jap CVs. There will be plenty of time in the years to come to sink a few clapped-out tankers. Besides which I have more pressing concerns such as two gravely wounded CVs to worry about.

This turn Luskan launched a shock attack with his pathetic troops that he has on the Admiralty Islands, which was repulsed. I have just managed to hang on to the Admiralty Islands....just. It was a close thing getting the troops and supplies there to hold Luskan off, but with total command of the air Luskan was doomed.

Now where shall I hit next?

Total control of the air - the uber B17s have flown 5 times in 5 days - hopefully this has used so much war supply that the US economy won't recover and the war is won.

Of course, the fact that 200+b17s could fly that often in that many days concerns me. Then again there has to be something for the allied player to do while he lacks the ability to project firepower through other means.

The last few turns I have devoted to mines. Mines and more mines. There are a few islands that I had mined early on - but hadn't topped up in a long time. I have very very large tfs of MLs sorting that out now.

Still haven't seen a sub hit one though (was it Frag or Nik that was having kittens about that? Or someone else?)

In other news 3 previously damaged Jap BBs were released from the yards ready for more action. I know exactly where I'm gonna send them too.

Step 1 for ALL jap players: expand several of the home island repair port facilities repeatedly - and manually ferry supply in to make sure the expansions are quick. I have actually been able to repair faster than things have been getting damaged this game. Even bigger ships etc.

Keeping such a high level of operations with my LRB is killing me, over half the aircraft are now down with maintenance problems. I'm going to have to rest them for awhile to recover. Not to mention the drain on supplies.

Raver has started parking his subs in harbour hexes again. I've detailed a few TFs to dissuade them properly.

I have also completed my 2nd phase of engineering projects within my empire. While the area is classified I sent 150+engineers to every base to build the forts to maximum size before replacnig them with a garrison. Great work by my engineer corps, who are now eager to move onto the third designated defence improvement area.

Does Raver try to leapfrog Rabaul (he still hasn't got full control of Admiralty yet!)? I think he might just to give his bombers a target for 12 months. Admittedly as the allies I would be attacking on a different front, but Raver being an inbred Melbournian (even we Aussies call that the deep south - basically Tasmania let's face it) probably wants to attack north from Oz.

Well as to where my thrust are coming from, one does not have to be a mental giant to figure out that I will only be advancing under the protection of an air-umbrella, hence the current thrust up through PNG and also via Timor. But then again I also have plans well advanced for a strike agaist the empire in other areas, but I'm NOT going to even hint as to where this is going to be.
At this stage I have no interest in landing troops at Rabal...why would you when it is now a huge prison camp and I don't even have to worry about guarding or feeding the scum that are trapped there. Much better to leave it to rot on the vine and move onto other places.

I've to trying to use my subs as intel gathering platforms, with i might add little success. All the seems to happen is that Luskan sends a huge ASW TF and sinks them. However the subs are good for spotting when a TF arrives in port. Not sure if I will continue with the form of intel gathering, as it is rather expensive at the cost of a sub per port hex.

The Sara is still in a very bad way and I am still fighting to save her. She has 90% system damage (up from 75%) and I just can't seem to get the flooding under control which remains at a subborn 35%. It would be a real blow to the fleet if I have to scuttle her.

Raver starts his bombing at Rabaul. Not a good sign - I plan to switch in and out some vital troops very soon.

I was only using the Swordfish at Rangoon to attack the shipping.....damn....I was hoping that they would have attacked using torps. I am shocked by the large losses that the AVG has taken, but I'm only reading what has been posted as i am still downloading the turn from Luskan. The AVG has really lost their edge.

Raver is getting sloppy. First no air cover to speak of over the Admiralty islands where he's parked yet more of his surface fleet. I think in the last 8 weeks I've crippled 5 enemy CAs - this time I'm hoping I sank at least 1 of the two I just slapped.

In other news Raver is trying to sneak base forces, engineers and supply into the DEI I never got around to taking. Of course, I may have left htose bases between me and Oz for a reason - yet MORE target practise. Tanaka had a field day.

Smackdown my arse ! First off the ships that got hit at Lautem were all empty, Luskan should have hit them two days ago, but he is so dim-whitted that it took him awhile to figure out how to launch an attack.
Second point, the fact that some bombers managed to find and hit my ships at the Admiralty Islands is due to the CAP failing not at appear, and it is NOT because Luskan has such a brillant tactical mind. It was a screw-up plain and simple.
Note how he glossed over the fact thart he has still got 40,000 troops trapped at Rabal, note how he glossed over the fact that Rabal has no port or airfield to speak off. Note how Luskan is UNABLE to send a relief force to Rabal. Note how I now have FULL control of Timor and will soon be kicking in the door on the rest of the DEI. This will expose just how weak his defences really are.
