I watched a two hour documentary about the Korean War last night, and I thought that it would make a great conflct to do as a computer game.

The only game for this that I am aware of is the scenario for TOAW.

A new game should have a map covering parts of China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

And I think a game of this type would be very timely considering the real world events taking place in Asia at this time (Chinese sabre rattling over Taiwan; possible North Korean nuclear weapons; and the United States withdrawing 12,500 of its 37,000 troops stationed in South Korea by 2006, etc)


The Ground War:

1) It would resemble many of the WWII battles. There were many intense "do or die" battles that took place.

2) Hundreds of thousands of troops were involved.

3) Large amphibious operations took place involving hundreds of ships and thousands of soldiers.

4) Potential for a wide variety of strategies, etc. .

5) It lasted more than three years.


But most importantly:

The Political Events

The game engine would need a very robust event engine to simulate the political minefield of what was involved here. A few possible issues:

1) North Korea wanted to invade South Korea, but Mao wanted to invade Taiwan instead.

2) USSR wanted China to do its dirty work, while it supplied jets and tanks.

3) As the UN forces, do you rush to the Yalu? Do you bomb Chinese bases inside China? Do you bomb the bridges over the Yalu?

4) As China, do you invade North Korea?

5) As the USSR, how far do you go to support the effort?

6) What happens IF the UN bombs China?

7) How far will the escalation go? Do you threaten to use the BOMB? What would be the consequences for such a move?

8) Does Chang Kai-Sheck get involved?

I think there are numerous possibilities with a wargame set in this theatre. But it should most definitely have to have a very good event engine to throw in the possible political/military outcomes that might be possible based on a player's actions and based on random percentages. . .

Thus every game could be different. . .

I think SPMBT has some exposure here, and Squad Battles has a Korean game.

But I agree, it is not an over done event.

Yes, you're right Les. With SPMBT though, it centers more around just the battles. I was thinking more in terms of a large strategic game, with a very healthy event engine.

I completely agree. I've been saying someone needs to make a Korean War strat game. I don't know if I can say it any "harder".

Under Matrix's development house, they have all the talent here (2by3, SSG, Panther Games, etc) to do a great job. . .

The Korean War would make a great wargame, both against the AI and for PBEM.

Plus, when you look at events back in the 1950s in Asia, and then look at events today in Asia, you can see that some things never really change
