I think the first thing that almost all of us did is pick a side and hit WITP and stareted it. So How did the PH strike go for you? This was mine as the allies. I only sufered 1 dd sunk and 3-bb's at 65+damaged one BB was not touched!

Using historical first turn as allied I had all BBs but Oklahoma (just 14 system damage) with severe system damage (65+%) and 25-45% float damage. The BB California and a DD were sunk.
259 Planes were destroyed in all theatre, only 10 in AA combat. two P-40s from Honolulu scored the first two air victories of the war against zeros.

Playing as Japan with historical first turn the AI scored 4x BBs and 2x DDs sunk, a great victory.

I am guilty of the "NeedtoJumpInTheDeepEndFirst-itis" as well. I was rewarded by the Gods of war by only having a single(!) DD sunk. Only 1 BB over 65% sys damage and only 1 other above 50%. All Hail the Gods of War! I am thinking that I will be able to commence severe retalliation sooner than I anticipated.

As for the rest of them I don't have a Combat report for it, but here is a screenie taken on Dec. 14 of the ships in port at pearl:

I am one who simply needed to get started in the campaign. I figure that the mistakes I make in the first few turns are the typical problems of getting a huge war machine going. I'll pick them up in time. (I did play through the tutorial to get the mechanics of the game -- then it was Load Scenario 15 and watch the fun.)

Pearl Harbor:

1 ship sunk. A PT boat hit with a 800kb AP bomb. I figure the bomb went through the boat, buried itself in the muck at the bottom of the harbor, blew up, and sent PT splinters all over Ford Island.

Also, the California is on the fringe. The Arizona also took some serious damage. Three BBs have moderate damage and 3 BBs were badly dented but serviceable.

I'm worried about the Ogalala. Every system on board has been knocked out, and there are 8 fires still burning. I should just bring one of those PT Boats around and put her out of her misery -- sink her before something explosive happens. The fire crews have more important things to worry about.

I played w/ historical first turn off and surprise attack off and evacuated all the BB's and some escorting light ships from PH.

I've always wanted to see what would'a happened if the USN had its BB's intact. However, I had a TF of CL's and DD's leave and come back to PH, and they got chewed up pretty badly. I guess it's better to lose a couple DM's and PT boats than battleship row, eh?

I've tried the historical full war start three times as the Allies versus the Japanese AI. In all three cases the KB launched only 1 strike and only sank 1 CA and one or two other small fry. The damage to my BBs wasn't bad either, usually with one or two with less than 10 system damage. (Hey, they might have gotten that from an auto-upgrade. )

In general, air attacks agains ships from both sides aren't doing a lot of damage. But land bombat between armies is brutal, particularly on the part of the Japanese forces. There seems to be no way that the Allies can hold the Japanese land forces to the historical time frame.

One BB (Oklahoma) sunk, six others knocked about to some extent, but all eventually repairable. One CL and one DD also sunk. Got off quite lightly.

I used the vary start option, historical turn, surprise.

Game dumped both my carriers in PH... yay...

Lost a whole 3 ships (1 CA, 1 PT and one Aux type craft), couple of smashed up BB's over 50 sys damage. Jap bombing strategy appeared to be dump all the bombs onto carriers and torps into everything else.

One almost sank but will be ok if nothing else touches it, and the other only has 30 sys damage.

And for that I think the carrier got a whole 10 extra F4F-3's in the air, one flimsy counterattack by 6 TBD's and some abortive efforts by SBD's.

A fun start to the game :)

I used historical first turn, surprise on. The Japanese AI sunk the BB Tennessee and damaged every other BB, but no other BB has FLT damage over 60 or so, so I may survive. Depending on what KB does next. Hehe, I'm still working on inputting my December 8 turn. :)

Yeah the AI needs some advantages, and the random starts are neat.
Do you think losing the carriers now (and therefore getting Essex class replacements faster) is better than just having the carriers smashed up in port repairing for several months (I left both of mine in PH and get everything else that was scratched out. Now end of Jan and ~12-15 sys has been fixed on each)?

One way you are down two carriers for a couple of years, the other they are out for about one year or (if not heavily damaged), just a couple of months.

Hm, what happen if YOU sink the carriers ?
i mean, you get 2 or 3 96 damaged carriers, sitting in a far far away harbor... you need around the same time to repair em or to get 2 essex !?
Well i would scuttle em, cause i get the planes AND the ships !
Or do you recive em only if you do not scuttle ?

Really interesting, cause this could be used strategically as an allied player....

and i think this shouldn´t be possible

But i agree, if you loose a carrier early in the war, the US WOULD produce one more essex... i would go as far - for any sunk carrier they would have produced one.. not only for the 42 lost carriers...

But i would delay em some months more AND they have to take the "original" air groups and these have to be withdrawn 6 months before the carriers are ready to fight...

but the same should be true for the japanese... if a carrier loss happen earlier as at midway, they should commission one more carrier (Unryo/Tahio-Class, for the zuikakkukis the last)

Took more losses than before and sunk even less ships.. The only thing that died was that stupid PT boat. Although, on the other hand the first attack of the war was my ships sinking a dutch Sub - the same sub that usually gets the first shot of the war... I beat him to it and sunk him

Just for fun I tried suprise and historical first turn off and made my moves based on my knowledge of the attack. I moved everything (even PT boats) out of PH and sent three equally strengthed surface combat TF's north to try to get lucky and end up in the same hex as the Japanese CV TF.

End result was no ships damaged at PH, one 3 BB, 1 CA, 11 DD taskforce went into surface contact with the Japanese CV taskforce and the Arizona put a shell into Hiryu that casued a critical hit. Some minor damage to my TF (13 SYS for Arizona) and everyone made it back to PH. Other BB's took minor SYS damage from secondary air attack heading home, but no torpedoes hit and max damage from air attacks was 9. Admittedly this was not the most sporting excercise, but fun to play around with.

I gave it a second shot (now knowing what hex the Japanese TF would be in) and sent an 8 BB surface TF to the same location. They also engaged but got no hits on carriers and were damaged pretty badly by the escorting Japanese BB's. Air attacks also mauled the surface task force quite a bit and a Japanese sub got in a good torpedo hit on the California.

A third attempt (a tie-breaker of sorts) also resulted in no carrier hits and five damaged American BB's (though none over 30 SYS). I guess luck has a lot to do with it...

Yes, I know this was not historically accurate, practical, or at all sporting. Just an excercise in "what if's." The historical 1st turn that I used to start my actual campaign resulted in one PT, one DD, and one CA sunk and a lot of stuff damaged, but no BB's even reached 50 damage in any category.

Launched a dozen of first historical turns while doing IJN production tests this week-end, with head to head (giving no orders at all to Allied is fater than let the computer giving somes). All games end with at least one BB sunk in PH, 2 or 3 with 2 and one with 3.

On a side note, one PH attack (that sink 1 BB, damaged heavily (SYS 50-75) 5 others and hit around 5 other ships badly, also destroyed 150+ planes, only costs the KB 14 planes : 4 Zeroes, 6 Vals, 4 Kates, difficulty historical). Usual losses are between 20 and 35.

I tried with historical off and surprise off. I moved VMF 211 to Johnson, and the Central Pacific PBY squadrons were spread out to Lahaina, Hilo, Johnston, and Midway. I send out one transport TF to Johnston and set up a few ASW TFs and send them out to play. I usually have one BB sunk with plenty of other damage. I try to think that with the warnings historically some dispersal occured and a slightly higher alert status was given instead of imcompetent leadership.

I tried a few times and only sunk 3 BBs so I changed the plan. The logic behind the US Plan Orange was that the war would start with a strike in PI so I tried this. I put all my CVs into a strike on Manila. The result was 15-16 subs sunk as well as a lot of AKs. Several more ships were victims during the next week as they tried to get to PI.

Many people have described this plan as "Gamey" but this was what the US thought would happen. I would rather deal with BBs in 6 months in exchange for knocking those pesky subs out of action for the first few months. When you calculate how many points worth of AK/TK the subs are going to sink it works out the same as sinking 3-4 BBs.

I am trying against the AI. Non-historical, what I think that Kimmel's most likely reaction would be to the missing warning, cap alerted to 50% at Pearl, 100% in overseas bases. I didn't think that he would sortie the fleet without knowing if the Japs would there to recive his attack. I lost a DD and a AK. All of the Battleships took substantial dame, but, none sunk. Singapore & Bataan still hold out. I plan on forming a line on the Irrawandi with the forces in India, and trying to take Hanoi with the Chinese. Transferring the Dutch to one good base. And holding on for dear life!!!
