Well, as a seasoned wargamer with over 20 years experience, I typically play only one scenario 'right out of the box' - the BIG one.

Well, I am PO'ed to say the least - I am playing the Japs - Historical start, etc.

When I finally get to turn 2 of the War, I get CTDs, and they happen doing just about anything.

-----------------------------------

Can anyone post here any other CTDs and their suspected causes?

I have applied the 1.10c patch and the reg patch after it.

I am on a P4C-800 E Deluxe MB with a 3.2 GHZ HT Pentium 4 with 1 GB Kingston Ram, dual Channel.

It IS overclocked by 10 % (Jumperless Config - Nice), and NO other application or game crashes.

This puts the CPU at 3.52 gHz and the Ram at 220, dual channel at 440.

The Video Card is an eVGA GeForce 5900 FX.

The Video Card is NOT overclocked, only the MB, CPU, and Memory at 10%.

I will try it without OC later today, and let you all know if that works.

Audigy Sound Card.

All drivers are as up to date to release as possible.

Norton or any other AV software is disabled.

AMOF, I use End It All 2 to stop just about everything before I play.

----------------------------------

Right now, the game is unplayable - shame, that.

Thanks,

Bill

Hi,

Sorry to hear about the problems. Have you tried re-naming the sound directory to "nosound"? Based on your setup, it seems likely that you are being bitten by the sound bug.

Regards,

- Erik

After reading about the crashes and looking at our system specs, including the few of us with Alienware PC's, the good news is that it's not our PC's that are the problem. The better news (Quick Prayer) is that it is a "bug" and a "bug" can be squashed. IMHO, the "no sound" option is like playing golf without clubs, real pretty to look at but no score. One small solution i have found, being the stubborn grognard that i am, is don't do anything on turn 1...just start the game and end your first turn. That "seems" to work more often than not and once i get past the first turn i don't have any crashes. A game of this "extraordinary magnitude" must be crash free and i have faith they will resolve it soon, in the next 30 minutes would be ideal.

Be assured the sound glitch that's affecting a few systems does not appear to be a hardware issue, though in many cases other problems have been resolved by driver and DirectX updates. For those that have fully updated systems and are still experiencing issues related to sound, we are working on a patch as quickly as we can. Some of your fellow customers have been contacted and are helping us to debug and fix this problem.

Please note that none of our testing and development systems could duplicate this, including the Alienware PCs we were using to run our demos at Origins, it seems to be restricted to showing up only on some combinations of hardware, even though it is not specifically a hardware issue.

Regards,

- Erik

I bolded here what I think MIGHT be important. I've noted a pattern of Audigy 1 cards with a lot of the sound problems. What I'd do is check your direct X version and ensure it's up to 9.0b AND take another quick look at the sound driver. If it is in fact updated as late as you can get it, then do a DXDIAG. See if any DX conflicts exist.

Don't know for sure, but I know when I built the system I'm on I was told to stay clear of Audigy 1 cards with my board due to hardware troubles, etc... That's another possibility, but as Erik pointed out, it's probably remote. Suffice to say though I bought an OEM Audigy 2 card and have been VERY happy.

I'd say check those out Wilhammer and see what's what in addition to the sound directory change. That'd be your last resort to be honest. That'll at least tide you over till the support guys can patch this nefarious sound bug.

Hi, Audigy 1 user here. Im running XP Professional on a AMD XP 2000+ with 512MB RAM and a RADEON 8500. Ive got DirextX 9.0b. My Audigy 1 drivers are dated 2/23/2004, version 5.12.1.443. Im not having any sound problems, just problems playing the intro videos (no biggie) after the patches. Everything else with the game works superbly, no CTD's, no slowdowns, no stutters.

Regards,

Still maintains at least SOME question about the motherboard and an audigy 1 card. I have an MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R board with an 800mhtz FSB which is ideal for my Athlon 64 bit chip. I was told adamantly when I bought it to steer clear of Audigy 1 boards due to conflict issues... Tis why I suggest it as a possible cause... Driver issues, etc may not show much, but if there's a hardware conflict of some kind, the board may not work properly and cause problems...

You most likely have a board that rocks with Audigy 1. Frankly I'm a little envious cause it would have saved me 80 bucks on the OEM Audigy 2. LOL!

I cant even remember what motherboard I put in this machine I have been thinking about an Audigy 2 tho, especially one of those super-whamadyne ZS types. When reinstalling Windows and the various drivers, I NEVER use the original CD that came with the Audigy; it wants to load too much c**p onto the system. Anyway, Im glad its working... Good Hunting!

That it does, which is why I went with an OEM version of Audigy 2. Just the card and drivers... Works like a champ minus the rubbish. LOL!

There is a Drivers Only options with the Creative CD. Use it or reload your machine

Frankly, in all my years of building machines, the majority of all problem machines had Sound Blaster type cards in them.

I've got a Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro in my Area-51 PC and i have the crash as well, although not ALL the time ( <insert prayer here> ). There are more than a "few" of us i suspect as not everyone has had a crash...YET. Some crash more, some less and some infrequently but i'm sure it's the same culprit and i hope they find it. This is a common side effect of PC gaming/developing mixed with PC merchandising...SO many configurations. Either way for the price we payed, high... but worth it, we expect a little more at the start. Thank God it's Matrix behind it (support) is all i can say. Is the patch done yet, come on, it's almost dinner time.

Heard that MANY times Frag... Though in some fairness I think they might have FINALLY got it right with the Audigy 2, but it's taken em HOW LONG? LOL! At any rate, I'm sure this whole sound issue will get sorted...

Funny, in the old days none of my old pc wargames would work without a real Soundblaster card...no 100% soundblaster compatible's would work. Now that's irony.

I experienced the sound bug. On my end it seems it only happened during the combat animations. Has anyone with this bug tried to keep the sound directory intact and only turned off animations?

I'd like to add that I too have a CTD during the tutorial at the exact moment my bombers are about to begind dropping bombs. I renamed the Sound directory to Nosound, and it plays...of course, without sound, it's nowhere near as much fun.

My Sound Card is an Audigy 2.

-------------------

I undid my overclocking, to no avail.

The error always occurs when clicking on something - but not every time. I might click around about 20 or so times, and then all of a sudden, a CTD click happens.

I'll check on disabling sound.

Right now, I am at work.

Willhammer, I have the same board, processor (including overclocking ) and sound card as you and I dont get the crash....just so you can rule those out of the equation.

I am going to reapply the sound card drivers and Dirext X9 this evening, and see what happens.

I am considering the old wipe and reinstall option of the OS and all.

It is about time for it - I have been with my new PC for about 4 months now.

Thank God for my Plextor DVD writer - backing up 60 GB of data is a daunting task without DVD-Rs at 4.5 GB each.

Willhammer, I have the sound bug too, and I'm just playing with my sound directory renamed as NOSOUND. Yeah, it's lousy not having sound, but it beats not playing at all.

The devs are actively at work on a patch. I wouldn't reinstall your OS just because of this. I doubt it will fix it, and there should be a patch soon anyway.

Actually, Ive found XP needs reinstalling a lot less often thankfully. I used to have to reinstall ME once ever few months, but you seem to be able to get away with once a year or more with XP. I think that in part this is probably due to the NTFS file system, which seems to be much more robust.

Good luck with whatever you need to do!

Update:

Tried to update Audigy 2 ZS drivers, and found that my current version was, well, current.

Same with DX9.

Did rename SOUND directory to NOSOUND, and now I can play the game.

BTW, I remember one CTD was while trying to click on a Port Symbol in a Base Hex, and all the rest happened while going through anchored ship lists while trying to assemble task forces.

I ran it several hours last night, and no glitches.

This is unfortunate, for now I have obtained a huge and attractive time sponge, that will cause a temporary shut in status for myself, and the occurence of more events on the 'Honey ain't done it yet' list.

Thanks a lot, Matrix!

I don't think that will help. I have installed the game on my HP widebody notebook at home and it worked without a glitch at all. I installed it on my Dell at work, and got the CTD on the second turn of the 42A campaign (it has SoundBlaster, driver updated from the Dell site). I changed a few things and it only changed the point of CTD. Strangely, the sound seems to work fine. There are quite a few files in the SOUND directory. It must work OK until it tries to call one of several incompatible files, then blows up.

I changed SOUND to NOSOUND and that solved the problem. One could argue that NOSOUND is a good idea at work anyway

Now if someone can tell me how to get the HP widebody to go to a 4:3 aspect ratio, I'll be good to go.

Yeah, well I'm a sound junky. I simply can't bring myself to play if I can't hear the sound of my bombs hitting Jap ships....sorry. Guess I'll wait for the patch.

Glad you hear you're up and running, we're working to fix the sound issue, which while it is not strictly a hardware/driver issue does seem to rear its head on the Audigy series of cards which appear most vulnerable to it. It took several days of hard work for Keith and some other affected customers to get to the bottom of it and we hope to have a patch up by the end of the week to resolve it.

Regards,

- Erik

I was having the CTD with my HP Pavilion 7955 with a SoundMax Digital Audio. Renamed sound file and is working now but would really like to have sound on.

I do get the same problem like Wilhammer: CTD's after assembling a Task Force or after clicks on symbols and ports.
