i suspect some of the pictures are from model box art.

i took a b/w photo of arizona (early 40), grabbed the logo from the arizona memorial museum association (which i am a member), took a steel texture from one of my 3D models for the background and made everything gray scale to match the photo. added text and voila.
but then i do this for a living and for a hobby.
