Maybe I've messed this all up and don't understand the computer's thinking, but I'm having trouble getting my men to retreat in the right direction.

The most damaging situation I've encountered is in Burma. The Japanese 55th Division is pushing me back...out of Moulmein,...and one hex further up the railroad toward Rangoon. I've decided to evacuate Rangoon. I have the CD unit still there, three infantry units at the rail intersection and thee rest of my guys across the river one hex towards Mandalay. The Japanese move forward and attack my three infantry units at the intersection and push them back. Where do they retreat to? Rangoon...where I just evacuated (and previously sucked all the supply out of). I want them to go the other way, towards Mandalay.

So the question is... is this my problem in failing to understand game rules/mechanics or is it a failing in the game? (a marvelous game, by the way)

It's a mechanics issue.

Troops will retreat towards a supply source.

As long as that darn CD sits in Rangoon, you'll be going that way.

If you plan on fleeing, you have to get 1 hex further to break that supply link and have your guys go the other way.

Thanks so much for the help (on this and everything else in the other threads). I was wondering if that CD was going to be a problem. I looked a turn too late and found that he was moveable. Hopefully, I won't get too beat up by the Japs here. Lesson learned.

Yes, the only way is to pull everything out of Rangoon, early. Even then, I generally lose some. But my strategy is to get everything moving out from Karachi in the direction of Burma as quickly as possible, then build up a defensive line around Kohima/Imphal. The Japs generally seem to run out of supply just past Mandalay, and I then (1942) keep them occupied by attacks towards Akyab and in the NE of Burma to try to open or keep open the route to China. So far the need to keep switching units to block my attacks seems to have stopped them making any new advance on India.

Wait till you see the Rangoon Goons retreat into the swamps and across the rivers to the west instead of up the road. Hell, mine retreated all the way to the end of the 'penninsula' and tried to live off frogs. In fact, I've seen my guys retreat in the stupidest directions. I think we should get a choice when a retreat is called for and as long as it's legal....
