Hm, didn't know there were restrictions on PM box, one AAR post contains more bytes than all the messages put together there
Should be ok now.

Andy continues his move into Indo China area - I'm not putting up a lot of resistance.
Our defences are concentrated around major bases, let's stretch the enemy thin before
the next fight.

In general I'm hoarding men and material. It's easier to keep the main defensive line supplied.
It includes Philippines, Formosa, Okinawas, Marianas, Palaus, Bonins and Home Islands. China and Manchuko
are self supported.

Quiet turn, enemy troops enters Ubon. Size 1(2) AF.

Enemy carrier TF approaching the Bonins again. Tempting to send in air units,
but air strength indicators will give us up immediately and trigger huge 4E raids
from Wake and Marcus.

Kinda mission impossible, so just as well to preserve our strength.
Finally most of our Zeke units have been filled. There are more kamikazes around than
ever. Training them the convential way.

Got a feeling that it is quiet before the storm again!

Thinking about loading the Taiho with 50 kamikaze Zekes and 27 escorts.
That could work.

Almost filled out all Betty units, still got plenty depleted Frances squadrons.
Replacement rate is lower for this ac. Will take another month or 6 weeks to fill
out the remaining Oscar Sentais. Got A LOT of them

Our 3 Kamikaze attacks from Saigon, Bien Ho and Camranh Bay were disasters:
All bombers from Saigon failed to find their targets and some 43 Zekes from the other bases
took of and crashed into the woods of Kratie. This kamikaze bug is really, really annoying.

In real life one out of 5 kamis hit their targets. In this game it's like one in 25. Good thing
we got a lot of ac than in real life...maybe it evens out.

The enemy fleet is moving past Saigon and towards Camranh Bay!
Not without casualties this time.

'Weapons exhausted, our blood will bathe the earth, but the spirit will survive.
Our spirits will return to protect the motherland.' Poem by Chujo Mitsuru Ushijima (d. by suicide, 1945)

Nimitz and Halsey reckoned that one in four kamikaze were making strikes, and one in thirty-three were sinking a vessel.
The USSBS Report Nr.6 for the Philippines campaign officially reported to Washington tht 26.8% of the kamikaze were hitting
a ship and 2.9% were achieving a sinking.

The Japanese prefered to attack in small groups at dusk or dawn to evade enemy CAP. By going in very low they would
evade enemy radar detection until they were only 10 miles away from the ships. This would make it impossible to intercept
the kamikazes before they made their dive.

The escort carrier Ommaney Bay riddled by explosions as the Tai-i Iwamoto dives on her!

From the book "Kamikaze" by Raymond Lamont-Brown:

During the afternoon of 4 January (1945) the kamikaze appeared again as the fleet rounded Panay Island west of Palawan.
A few were shot down before they could make their dives. Again only one pilot was able to penetrate the barrage (AA) to crash-dive on the deck of Captain H.L. Young's esocr carrier Ommaney Bay (CVE-79); this time the damage was such that Young ordered Abandon Ship and Ommaney Bay was blown up by the destroyer Burns. One hundred and fifty-eight men had been killed or wounded.

Strange how close to her real life fate the Ommaney Bay came!

A truly action filled day! Enemy fleets are moving slowly east in the South China Sea.
The return of Imperial Air Units caused many casualties - on both sides today.

We lost some 250 ac in return for 155 enemy. Andy's carrier fleet is being drained of ac.
I can't understand were he's going No matter what target he selects he will have to face a lot
of troops and air attacks, carrier support is limited. He's mostly using Cv'e, the Wasp and cvl's me thinks.

If it's a feint to draw resources West before an attack in the East it will be of limited value.
Japan is stocked with air units.

Let's see what happends!

Mostly conventional air attacks on the enemy fleets outside Camranh Bay were destroyed with
crippling losses today. Only un-CAP'ed enemy ships were hit. 77 enemy ac were destroyed, but some
400 Jap ac were shot down, some 300 by the enemy carrier CAP that numbered ca 120 fighters.

The ongoing debate in Imperial HQ that has been going on whether to concentrate on conventional
or special attacks has now settled in favor of the latter. The conventional air attack groups will
be withdrawn and replaced by Kamikaze units. 2 days ago a strike force of only 20 Kamikazes achieved
more than 300 conventional bombers couldn't.

The Imperial Navy managed to intercept the enemy outside Kiska today.

I've been sneaking around Kiska Island with a small surface combat TF.

The game is becoming increasingly frustrating for both sides I'm afraid.
Andy is facing huge numbers of Japa ac and lvl 9 forts everywhere he turns.
High altitude kamikazes can't be intercepted and there's little chance of successfully invading Japan by the end of the game.

On the other side I'm faced with repeatedly having to re-organize and train thousands of aircraft only to see them shot down
in enormous droves by enemy Uber CAP. This isn't very funny when it goes on for years.
Enemy convoys can also move with impunity despite a very strong Japanese Air Force, only by using high altitude kamikazes that
can't be intercepted is it possible to hit the enemy fleets, again causing more frustration in the other camp.

It would have been nice to restart the game with the latest patches and perhaps a mod. Unfortunately this isn't an option after
playing for 3 years... Guess we owe all those who have been following this game - and Matrix for supporting us - to play the game to
the end.

I hope neither me nor Andy get so frustrated that it all goes out the window before 03/46....

Already starts to feeling the frustration you've mentioned. I'm only in early 1944, but i do know what are talking! It is a common situation that i spent more than our to reorganise my depleted groups... and i can imagine how frustrating can be invading an atoll and than faced with lvl 9 forts (Milipoli)...

I imagine you will spend a lot of time re-organizing after your own Mother of all battles 2

Enemy fleet in South China Sea is dispersed, carrier fleet moves north of Hue while transports
are left south with little protection?

I send in kamikazes today and score hits on a number of ships including a cve.
I have no idea were Andy is going, he's getting too close to China and the Army
the will not accept an Allied presence in Hue (this is not a sea port by the way).

I'm using the resources on hand, mostly busy re-building the Navy and preparing for
a defense closer to the Home Islands.

I'm a few months behind you, early 1945, but have many of the same frustrations. I tried to have a major effort to take down a CV TF using 4-5 bases fully stocked with high XP bombers and fighters (OK, mostly A6M2/3a and Oscars for the range). I watch strike after strike go in, and take horrendous losses while fatiguing and attriting the enemy CAP. Second to last strike goes in, his CAP is down to minimal levels.... And Tokyo decides not to launch. Exactly 500 planes (I try not to overstack) sit on the tarmac instead of delivering the coup de grace. Can't remember how many planes I lost, but enough that you can't try that very often - and not sure you want to, because the same thing might happen again.

And that's one of the better cases, at least a fair amount of CAP went down too. More often, I watch as groups of 20 Bettys or 5 Grace or whatever launch solo against TFs with hundreds of F6F flying CAP.

It's getting to the point where there's less and less I can do to actually influence events.

Say - would you mind posting a victory point screen? I'd be interested in seeing how things compare.

Will get a victory screen later Erstad, forgot to take one now. It's a bit misleading as it seems
like Japan got -30k points in ac losses. Points I guess Andy should have?

As it is Andy got 83k to 81k points.

It is almost impossible to coordinate proper attacks against enemy fleets from several major bases.
Even strikes from a single base usually ends up divided and un-balanced. Since the Uber CAP doesn't allow
leakers to get through, there is little left but throw in everything you got and hope the enemy runs out of
bullets before you do.

The Kamikaze bug were kamis attack land targets is getting very serious in Indo China.

It seems like Andy is using huge transport TFs without escorts as decoys? Can't tell, they're just steaming
around for themselves!? Right now I find everything extremely surrealistic.

I think the kamikaze bug has been adressed in some patch(es) a while ago but seems like old pbem games still suffer from it

I think it's games started against Wobbly.

I'm in '44 against him, and my Kamikazes have done the same thing.

Game was started w/ some variant of 1.8 (I believe), so it's not an old patch issue...

LOL! Wobbly's revenge....he's bugged my kamis

I'm starting to think that Andy has sent another invasion fleet towards Luzon, Batan Island or Formosa?
A bit to fantastic to be true Let's see what happends tomorrow.

We loose scores of bombers to the enemy Uber CAP and only manage to damage a cvl and a handful of transports.
Will try to do better tomorrow

Good news! The Reppu - Japanese Thunderbolt - has been succesfully researched and is now scheduled for production
next month, may 45 Can anyone tell me whether the A6M5 has to upgrade to the A6M8 before upgrading to the A6M7 Reppu?
Upgrade path goes A6M5 - A6M8 - Reppu. Was hoping it would skip the A6M8 if the Reppu went into productin first.

The Reppu will be a match for most enemy fighters except the Corsair and P-47, so it will be a most welcome addition to the
AF!

Can anyone tell me whether the A6M5 has to upgrade to the A6M8 before upgrading to the A6M7 Reppu?
Upgrade path goes A6M5 - A6M8 - Reppu. Was hoping it would skip the A6M8 if the Reppu went into productin first.

Unfortunatly the A6M5 airgroups require to be upgraded to the A6M8 first before they can be upgraded to the A7M2. I am afraid that if you can not produce some A6M8 first you will not be able to use the Reppu, ever.

The worry is that all my A6M8 factories will auto upgrade to the A7M2 before I can produce any Reppus.
This is a well known issue in the game... Since it takes some days before production of A6M8 is switched to A7M2 I'm hoping to produce a small pool
that I can use to run all my A6M5 through the A6M8 upgrade path.

I imagine this would be a very unpleasant surprise for Andy to face the A7M2 this early. They should be able to deal with F6F. So the next seaborn invasion can become a desaster...

Yes, the Reppus is a match for the Hellcat!
Better speed, manouverability and range

I thought if you turn the "allow upgrade" on that missing intermediates would be skipped.

Good news about the Reppu. All I know is it takes apart the Wildcat and isn't quite as good as the Hellcat. It must be due to the accuracy of the guns and duribility. But anyway its a heck of a lot better than the Zeke.

Once you start flying it in large numbers, Andy will have no chance. It is almost worth saving KB until you get it, too late for you I suppose

The Reppu still gets betten by the Corsair and the Thunderbolt.

It would almost be worth getting a hundred of them before you use them and scarring Andy half to death.

IIRC the field lengths can only handle numbers up to 32Kb (32768). Develops didn't count on ultra bloody air combat. After this point it seems to start counting backwards. My simple math gives your a/c losses as 32768+(32768-10910)=54626. Add in points for bases, IJA army losses and IJN Ship losses and its just a few shy of the total.

And those two 250kg bombs will help your kamikaze konverted airgroups too.

I'm not sure at all...

The A2A figure is strange: - 33 051, figures are supposed to be between 32 768 and - 32 768.

The total number of AC lost displayed on screen is equal to the sum of the 4 categories of losses.

If you substract from Andy score points for troops, ships and bases, it leaves 54615 points for AC, so close to the mark, but wether this is the real number of your losses or not, you can only check by pointing losses of each AC type (I suppose you don't lose more than 32k of any single type...)
