Nishimura surprised a vastly superior enemy surface group consisting of a super battleship, an Alaska class battle cruiser, two large light cruisers and 10 destroyers. A crushing superior force, but we took them by surprise!

Admiral Yamguchi then continues the fight and his men all have a burning desire not to go cheaply!!
Besieged from all directions our last fleet slugs it out

The last destroyer is sunk and slowly the Yamato and Fuso takes 16" hits - 3 torpedo hits see them lie low
in the sea. Still, the guns roar and numerous 14" and 18" shells slams into the enemy. Especially the Wisconsin
got it hard from the Fuso while 2 heavy cruisers are disabled by 18" shells. 3 enemy destroyers are also put on fire,
2 hit by 14" shells.

The end is in sight!

In a blaze of glory the mighty Yamato goes down, guns still firing!
straddled by 16" rounds we fight back and reduce the enemy battle line to burning wrecks!
Enemy destroyers are just bugs in the way and I've never seen such accuracy - despite enemy radar superiority
we leash out damage in all directions.

After 'finishing' the enemy main battle line we run into the rear van of older and damaged ships.
Our last battleships are pummeled into the deep but not before our last 2 14" shells rips into the old battleship Idaho,
putting her on fire!

Damn, Yamato and her compatriots really did an excellent job. That's an awful lot of USN FlAK removed from the Allied battleline AND quite a few cripples who are going to have to make the long, slow, dangerous journey back to the Phillipines. The surface component of the battle has gone as well as could have been expected.

Indeed, it went much better than we could dare hope for.
The grouping of only battleships and only fast cruisers was a good one.

Enemy destroyers landed some torpedo hits, but were mostly in the way of our guns
as the big guys fought it out.

Of course we got surprise visitors - in _the big battle_ I had to look after cakes instead
of ships

Weather isn't really favorable - Amami and hex to the west shrouded in, so is Luzon bases.
Most of our Okinawa and Home Island bases are not shrouded in so I expect some sweeps over Amami that
will be expensive.

Also spotted some uncovered TFs that will get it (I hope).
Carriers have been reacting as well, but not sure they moved out of the rain squalls....

That was one intense turn!!!

After the initial surface battles the air battles were dictated by weather.
Only Ishieaki and a major enemy carrier TF was open for 'business in the AM air phase.
Of course 300 B-29s managed to pummel Amami again...nothing stopping those ba$tards.

T-bolts as Ishieaki caused a lot of casualties but we also found a vast array of enemy captial ships
there virtually without cover

The Taiho moved perfectly and positioned herself 2 hexes north of Amami.
Numerous reactions dispersed enemy CAG all over the place
We also succeeded in drawing the enemy carriers close enough for our Shindens to escort our strike ac.
Andy had cunningly enough put his CAG on naval attack 1 hex - so Taihos sacrifice was not in vain.

We achieved some great successes today!

The enemy CAP over Amami was weakened by almost a dozen sweeps, reaction moves and strikes.
This and all the damaged ships in the area enabled us to strike hard - even though 95% of our LBA stayed home

I've broken the combat report up into many smaller segments.
Failed strikes are left out and I will show the Taiho battles in the next post.

It is possible that we actually drove most enemy TFs out of Amami and stopped them from unloading supplies!
Only a few of our transports in the air were shot down, and this is very important.

I'm afraid it can be almost impossible to save Amami, but we will do our best.

Here is the Taiho story: The incredible durable ship received a lot of attention today taking 9x1000 lb bombs
and 2 torpedo after being attacked by 100 bombers. She's now at 39 sys and 49 fires. She will move home but hopefully
continue to disrupt enemy TFs!!

This was indeed an expensive first round - for both sides!
Who is most fit for the next?

How did you get all those Shindens to enage his CAG? Were they escorting kamis?

Also, why do you say this is a "first round?" Do you think he is going to stick around for more? Are you going to try to hit him again from your Okinawa bases as he withdraws to Luzon? Clarification requested.

I hope PzB won't mind me answering some of these for you cap....

1. Shindens were escorting kamis. You can see a succesful kami strike occuring as part of the Shinden-escorted strike.

2. As to why this is only the first round...
a) Andy has just landed 20 division-equivalents ( half of the total force he can have available for the landing at mainland Japan ) on Amami. He can't abandon them. He needs to either withdraw them or reinforce them. Either way he needs those forces for his main landing in Japan.

b) I was puzzled as to why his troops Shock Attacked immediately on landing and then realised that Amami is an atoll. This is a HUGE error on Andy's part. What this means is that he cannot just slowly reinforce the place and wear it down--- which he surely has the troops to do --- but, instead, he must land en masse as any landings trigger another Shock Attack.

Today there was no Shock Attack so no troops were landed. What you'll find is that only supplies were landed so that Andy's Day 1 troops can recover disruption etc ASAP. If Andy is playing well we shouldn't see any further landings until such time as the troops ashore have fully recovered their disruption and fatigue ( 3 to 4 days ).

Landing at an atoll is really an odd, odd choice. It minimises Andy's ability to slowly build up his forces and make an attack when he has everything ready. Instead when he lands troops he MUST Shock Attack. Since he doesn't want to Shock Attack every day he must leave long gaps in between each troop landing day ( so, Day 1 = troop landing, Days 2 to 4 = supply landing, Day 5 = troop landing ) and that means he needs to hang around Amami for quite a long time --- giving your kamis a lot of time to hit him and hit him hard and repeatedly.

PzB, he's landed on an atoll again and very fortunately has missed a 1:1 on the first day. He can probably almost double his AV BUT over the next 5 days I'm quite sure you can fly a lot of troops in if you really commit to this... If you could hold him to another 1 or two 0:1s his forces will be significantly weakened for the invasion of Japan. Unless Andy really messes up you can't hold but so long as you only fly in fragments you can hurt him badly and delay his invasion ( which must be your twin goals ) whilst making your own losses good.

Landing at an atoll REALLY is a strange choice. He must have thought he could guarantee a 1:1 on Day 1 and he was actually pretty close.

Thx guys - I also enjoyed this show!
The less you have to fight with the more every round counts.
Fighting with the back to the wall has its own charm.

Unfortunately the Combined Fleet is no more
If the war drags on for another 5 months I may manage to patch up 2 old battleships.
Also got 5 destroyers, 1 light cruiser and the shot up Taiho remaining.

Indeed Nemo, this was just round 1 and we barely avoided a bad knock.
Andy missed some 47 assault points to achieve a 1-1 odds.

And yes, thought I had mentioned this, Amami is an atoll - max AF size = 4.
Its port size = 1, so even if Andy captures it he has to sail he damaged ships all the way back to Luzon!!!
We're going to make him pay for accelerating his landings of the inner defense perimeter.

If he had enough time he would systematically clean up in the PIs, Formosa and Okinawas before attempting
another jump. Still, no time in the game for this so here we are.

I only hope Andy was as surprised to find Amami an atoll as you guys.
This may explain why his troop ships moved away. He most certainly has more men and material at see, doubt he has
landed more than 1/3 of his available troops yet. So it will be almost impossible for us to resist when he persists - as
he has to do.

Our goal is to sink and damage as many ships as possible and shoot down as many CAG fighters as we can.
If we also can attrit his LCU on Amami it will be difficult for him to muster sufficient force for another landing
in the Home Islands proper. This battle must be prolonged as long as possible!!

The sun sets over the Imperial Fleet.....

Are you sure about this? In my game, Andy landed another 4000 AV at Tinian (his forces there are digged there for three months, after he tried with assault on Tinian). Suprisingly, no another shock attack when his second invasion occurs...

PZB, great show indeed!

Thx, but I'm afraid there will be a lot of suffering to come now

Andy moved almost all his operational carriers into one hex and despite bad weather this was one of the only
hexes open for 'business' in the AM phase. 500 enemy CAP fighters saw our fighters and bombers arrive in small
packets and dispatched of them one by one.

Because of some defensive successes the day wasn't a complete write of, but in total we lost 1000 ac to the enemy's
250 today. 5-600 of our ac were hacked to pieces by the Uber CAP

I thought we had some stacking limits for how many carriers there could be in one hex, asked Andy about this.
As it is he only needs to place them all in one hex and I have to shut down all my naval attack missions.

Hm, I would expect more shock attacks when the follow up landings occur!
We managed to move in some troops today and our AV is slowly rising again, but it will not be enough if Andy
unloads another 3-4000 AV.

I'm re-organizing our defenses - we're down to 600 LBA bombers and 300 dive and torpedo bombers.
Can't afford another Uber CAP massacre!!

Just pasting in the nasty AAR for today...we did hit some transports and destroyers, guess they were expendables.
Weather for tomorrow is cloudy, so I'm expecting a lot of action!

Todays losses:

Especially Betty and Grace losses hurt!

Andy confirmed that he only had 5 fleet CVs in the hex, but we have no rules
for number of CVEs so the total number of CAP fighters was devastating anyway.

The real problem isn't the number of CAP fighters - that's probably realistic enough.
Today most strikes went after the multiple TFs in the same hex. Each TF is considered an individual
target and therefore small strikes are dispatched.

The CAP for all these TFs is gathered in one, so the small strikes will be massacred.
No fault of mine or Andy's - just by design.

So while Andy got maybe 500+ ships in one hex we didn't manage to attack a single one.
Since the Navy is no more we can't force the enemy's hand anymore, so I guess there is fine little else
to do than try and hope for better weather

Why did you place so many bombers on naval attack? What were you hoping to hit other than his uber cap?

Also, I don't see much hope of wearing down his CAP if he is not going to stick around for a few days. He will just sail back to port, reload his fighter groups, and then come back at you. The only hope in a strategy aimed at wearing down the CAP is if the CVs have to stick around for a few days before being able to refit so you can hit them once the CAP is eroded.

It's always easy to ask why you try at all, but that's what we have to do.
Put a lot of bombers on naval attack and hope that weather is not too unfriendly.
Too often it is - like today.

I did not know if Andy would move more troops into Amami today - if he did the TFs would be
more vulnerable since CAP is reduced in a base hex.

Also, yesterday we damaged a lot of enemy ships and shot down a lot of CAP fighters.
Enemy defenses would be more vulnerable and I _hoped_ we would see a major strike from multiple bases.
If all attacking ac had concentrated their attacks we really could have achieved something.

As it was Andy moved back all his TFs into one hex while his damaged TFs steamed south to Ishieak.
Since only his Uber CAP TFs were in the clear we were doomed.

Of course you could say that I chose the wrong strategy, but I've never found one that worked anyway.
Only the Shinden is a threat to enemy CAG but has to short legs.

I know I shouldn't be annoyed, but it's impossible not to be after spending so much time re-building and re-training
all those ac just to see them shot down piecemeal over a 50 mile hex were each target receives 100% CAP protection
from every fighter in the hex. Guess this is how it'll always be in stock - but I really hope they get it right in AE!

Let's see what happens tomorrow - Andy has to return in force pretty soon but he will be even weaker tomorrow if he moves
into the Amami hex as he suffered even more lost and damaged ac. We still have some pretty good cards up our sleeve!

The UBER CAP is the exact reason that I won't play stock games in a PBEM anymore.

I like NIK mod games much better, there you have to be carefull to get within land based air range, even with the KB in the SRA in december 41....

Ok round 2 is over and another 1000 Jap ac lies shattered together with 314 Allied ones.
Ca 15 vessels are hit by mines, bombs and torpedoes.

We observe enemy carriers rushing in from Marcus Island area.
Andy is calling in reinforcements.

I have decided that we have to finish what we started.
This may not be for the faint of heart

We have plenty of fighters in the pools so given enough respite we will rebuild.
Andy on the other hand is short on CAG fighters and pilots, so why not let him have it all?
If we have to fight his LBA from Amami it will become a lot more difficult.

The good news: A 100 squads from the Imp Guards division have been brought back to Amami.
Our strength is higher than before Andy invaded - but I am expecting more landings soon - most
likely tomorrow.

I have another surprise ready then
