Good turn, but I can´t understand very well why didn´t you send the vals and kates at the same time you strike with your SC TF. COmbination of both could be deadly and the KB will surely distract some air attacks (at long range)
Losses could be severe but it seems that it is easy to recover high-skilled pilots with a brief China tour of duty.

On the other hand, PzB, you must admit that you´ve been mauled in the Timor sea. You´ve lost several DDs in that waters!. How many lost so far?. Knowing your strategy, I can´t undersand why you took that unnecesary risk and those high losses.
Any loss in the Karachi or Java battles could be undestandable but losses in the Timor sea (although it is also important) are more difficult to justify. FT missions in "hot areas" are a rol of dice and should be avoided unless life or dead situation. A veteran player like you should know this.

If you know my history with unescorted carrier attacks you'll understand! And those 60 fighters on CAP would have cost me 30 Zeros and perhaps even more crack bomber crews. In addition I could have come within range of 100+ bombers and escorts, the KB would have been threatened. I can risk surface ships but not
carriers and their crack crews.

The plan is therefore to move the KB 1 hex closer to Karachi and slowly maul the Allied af there - the remaining Allied warships will be picked off by my fleet.
I'd like to preserve my KB fliers to fight enemy carriers.

Yes, David got me in the Timor Sea - I hoped that 10 destroyers would be able to take care of themselves but I've been surprised twice now.
Not lost more than 2 + another possible 2 dd's even though several have been damaged. At least I have to delay David from bringing in more troops, can't
have B-17's on Timor, I'd have to evacuate southern Borneo

So since I can't place bombers or search planes anywere near the place, the navy got the dirty job. Yes, I knew it was a risk but was willing to take it.
Everything can't go according to plan and I just have to live and learn!

I'll be back

Yes, possibly you´re right. And what about put the KB at the range of LB but out of range of escorts...this could harm his air power over Karachi.

About Timor...maybe you can wait until your invasion of Java. It is curious, but big ship losses in a game are caused when players stubbornly want to "risk" or to "try" a FT / bombardment missions. Most of the times these operations are not needed at all or just bad planned. (not knowing where is the enemy or something like that)

People like to risk (in games). That´s why sometimes losses (in ships) are higher than historically

That's the plan - move 1 hex closer each day and gradually engage his AF! Yesterday bad weather grounded them, so I expect them to be out in
force tomorrow. 140 fighters should be a reasonable assurance. (70% CAP with max range 4 and all bombers set to range 2) Also had to reduce searhc plane settings, lost a lot of em over Karachi.

Also hoping that 2 Kongo battleships and 4 ca's will break through the reduced enemy surface ship screen and bombard Karachi tomorrow. That would
hurt him with a lot of troops and ac stashed there.

I think it's the threat of the somewhat over efficient B-17's that made me reluctant to leave Timor alone. It must also be mentioned that several of the destroyers were detached escorts without the best weapons. I will unload what I can now and go home... The problem is that the army and navy are busy: India, Java, Colombo, Mandalay AND Timor!

David also took a risk with his 2 bb's - the Idaho obviously didn't take too much damage from that torpedo hit. Guess Allied radar put me at an disadvantage.
In hindsight I should have moved 5 dd's as escort for a 5 ship FT TF. I wanted to move as many troops as possible, and this was probably the wrong choice!

PzB, I probably wouldn't worry too much about Timor... in my campaign game against Desert Fox, he is a damn good player, and I have not been able to remove him from Timor However, althought his B17's can hit me, it's more of a nuisance than a real threat... There are no supplies at Timor, so everything that fly's there or is built there needs to be supplied, so I watch for convoys!
I decided in my game that risking the KB and a lot of surface vessels is not worth it in that jungle rot!
oh yeah, I should have mentioned we are at about 17 Oct 42... waiting for the 1.5 patch because we have had some strangeness with land movement in china.
I think from reading both AAR's, you are gonna get a good fight.

My question is: now that your surface TFs ran out of ammo, where are you going to reload them? Will they be back in time to play their role again in the Karachi massacre?
Why not night bombing his AF at Karachi with your Army Bombers?

Nah, I'm not turning Timor into another Iron Bottom sound. I've managed to land 1000 troops there, that's
twice as many as the enemy. David sent out his carrier(s) and hit my dying dd's today. They sank outright, no
big surprise.

I'm reloading my 'cannons' at Karachi Hoepner, and I've brought an AD (torpedo transport with the fleet)

Today was another blood soaked day around Karachi - only lost another destroyer here and sank or disabled half
the remaining Allied warships and most of the transports. No bombardment attacks, but we got a lot more coming!
Guess there are 7-8 transports and 7-8 operational enemy warships left. Tanaka will soon have em all for breakfast

David has evacuated his heavy and level bombers to Java and China. A bunch of them hit the Norway Maru today, what
an insult!!!

A few Stringbags tried to hit the fleet today, but they were all shot down - and that's good cause I hate their lousy existence.
David is keeping his other bombers in place though, can't wait to hit em with 14" shells!

The army has now arrived in Karachi, another 2 divisions will follow suit tomorrow while 1 is left in Malir. We're going to start
out with bombardment attacks and first start reducing the forts when the battleships starts pounding the defenders.

Da plan is working! A torrent of Allied ac hit the fleet today, ran head on into the might
of the KB. For the price of 16 Zeros we brought down 120 enemy ac in a2a combat. Guess that
blunted the sword a bit.

No surface combat, but I've refuelled and rearmed my ships and they're going back in tomorrow!
Should see some pretty nice fireworks soon. The army conducted its first bombardment attack, there
are ca 100k enemy troops in Karachi. With 9 forts this is a hard nut, but we'll get there.

100 Army bombers and 100 Zeros have been brought to Ahmadabad, we'll hit Karachi as soon as the
Spits have been torched on the ground...

Also witnessed a rarity: Blenheims attacked my ships at night, didn't hit anything - of course - but
an Allied sub took part Sooo many rarities in this game!

The Blehiem 1Fs are radar equipped night fighters. I suspect ADavidB is just trying to use them historically though I have no proof of this.

Ok, we've reached another goal! The RN has been vanquished as a force in being in the East.
In a series of bloody battles the last ships were sunk and the Valiant left as a blazing wreck.
Losses were heavier today than earlier, mostly because my ships didn't have that many torpedoes left.
The AD that I brought didn't work..surprise, surprise. The heavy cruiser Chikuma, 2 cl's and one destroyer
were lost. Mostly the work of the Valiant and Devonshire. In return we sank 1 cl and 5 destroyers - and of course
disabled the Valiant. (Hit by several torpedoes and more than a 100 shells, it was left dead in the water)

The first 2 bombardments of Karachi went in, didn't cause that much damage. Another 2 bb's will add their weight
tomorrow before the army is ordered to attack.

In the air the KB fended of another few futile anti shipping strikes. Time to move one hex closer....Upping the ant
all the time!

Parts of the lighter elements of the fleet will now be sent home and only 2 BB bombardment tf's will be left.
The KB will stay until the Army AF can take over. There are still a lot of enemy fighters left.

The Tone class ca's are really not suited for surface combat, and I've lost em both. So keep on using em
as carrier escorts guys!

In Timor David sent in a surface group that hit a replenishment convoy and sank a transport and a few barges.
I'm trying to get in a little supply now and then. Another heavy strike on Tjilitjap destroyed more than 30 enemy
ac on the ground. A strike every 3rd day is good for morale and prevents the place from thriving <G>

Another intense turn!

My 2 Kongo battleships blew the Valiant into tiny bits that rained down all over the continent.
Another enemy destroyer and a handful of transports were also sunk. I had ordered one Val and
one Kate Daitai from the KB to perform a naval attack - mostly in order to draw out enemy fighters.
In bloody a2a combat the KB Zeros shot down 60 enemy ac and lost 16 of their own numbers. There
must have been some crack pilots among the enemy, cause even Mohawks managed to claim a few
kills. A strike from Karachi itself was cut to pieces and the only hit was scored on a PG.

Bombardment runs now became a lot more efficient and 2000 enemy troops were reported as
casualties and quite a few ac were destroyed and damaged. Tomorrow the Army will attack in strength
and a full scale air attack has been ordered.

It would have been impossible for the Army AF to achieve air superiority over Karachi alone, the fleet
was really needed. We have now sunk more than 50 enemy ships and rendered the capital undefendable.
It came at a cost, but I don't believe in luck and always use a heavy hammer if I can.

A very intensive turn! Those of you who doesn't like blood shouldn't keep on reading

I sent the Army Air Force in today escorted by half a hundred semi experienced Zero
pilots (there were 6-8 top aces among them though). More than 70 fighters rose to defend
Karachi and a bloody air to air battle took place! ca 50 friendly and enemy fighters were shot
down together with 17 Sallys. The bombers did get trhough and destroyed another 15 ac there.

The enemy has now also been blunted in the air - a few KB sweeps and the Army Air Force can
start daily bombing runs and keep the enemy engineers busy. Soon it will be possible to send the
entire fleet back home.

The ground combat was - as predicted - very bloody! The forts went down but 8k casualties was
harsh. You can't imagine how important it is to keep those forts down in a large city with unlimited
supplies and possible reinforcements. Hopefully we can end it all within 14 days - then we will still
have time to take care of unfinished business elsewhere...

More heavy fighting - and another 30 fighters and 20 bombers were lost - but the enemy CAP
is getting tired and morale is starting to break. It should not be easy to raise it under the
current circumstances....

No bombardments today as the ships didn't get into position (read: I forgot to remove the patrol not retreat setting...)
I've moved in some air reinforcements and more are on their way, but I hope that no more sacrifices are necessary now.
The poor chinese will become targets for 150 rookie pilots soon

Army losses were 'only' half of what they were yesterday, and enemy losses trippled - and most imortantly: the forts
were reduced again. Am I preventing the Allied engineers from raising them again? If we can keep up the pressure the
city will fall in a week!

More Tony's have been upgraded and I'm wondering were to send them. I got a lot of Tojos now and it's so sad that I can't
upgrade more Nate's. Does anyone know if this will be allowed when we upgrade to V1.5?

Lost another batch of Sallys over Karachi today, will rest for a few days and send in the bombardment fleets again - and this
time they will stay. Forts were reduced to 6, casualties are still high but at this rate the Allies will be forced to capitulate soon.

I'm unsure whether the troops in Karachi will surrender or retreat...so I'm planning to land my amph div in the hex north of it. The flank
is blocked by a tank regiment already.

Placed a string of subs below Timor - Grogs revenge Torpedoed another US battleship today - the sub was sunk - but that was a given.
Perhaps we can make David pay a stiff price for involvement in that green he11....

A transport tf on its way to Java was sighted by SBDs - I think there's a carrier out there somewhere. Providing it with LRCAP today
and speeding towards Malang. Starting to get to know Davids hit and run tactics now.

The base that was captured in Kwantung yesterday by a chinese unit turned into a Russian base today "¤¤#%&¤"!! Cursed...
This game needs 5 years of beta testing in order to find even 1/3 of the possible bugs.

Strangely non of my bombardment tf's hit Karachi but reverted into surface combat tfs
Well, forts were lowered again - this is going the right way!

A full division landed north of Karachi in order to 'encourage' a quick surrender.
No air activity today...except from the Tony's fire baptism. When the bombers returned
to Hong Kong they met an experienced Daitai that had just completed conversion training.
Oh boy, I like it! The 2*20mm and 2*12.7 cannons were deadly and 16 enemy bombers were
brought down.

I was right, there was an enemy carrier not far from Java! It hit and mauled a handful of
supply transports, but my LRCAP claimed ca 10 enemy ac without suffering any losses to
themselves. If only my naval bombers would fly now!

David brought in reinforcements to Lautern today, a PT boat hit a mine and sank..

Two reports in one...and the first one was rather extraordinary. David gets really audacious
in the second one!

The bombardment attacks causes more than 7000 casualties on the first day alone + 175 destroyed
enemy ac!!!!! Another 40 were destroyed the next day, and still 30+ fighters rose to meet my Army bombers
and claimed several kills. Almost unbelievable - capturing Karachi is NO walk in the park and I'm really glad
I brought such a formidable force. My divisions have been mauled and assault strength halved in a few days.
More engineers, tanks and divisions are being brought in and I will continue attacking until all the forts are gone.
If the city doesn't surrender I will rest for a few days before ordering a combined set of deliberate/shock attacks
over the next few days. This is what worked in Malir!

I'm really looking forward to finish business in India now. It has been a rought time since April 1st - fools day 1942

Today I punished David for something he can't blame on Wobbly: I sank the USS Yorktown!
There are a 100 naval bombers at Balikpapan and moving north of the Sea of Timor is really dangerous.
47 Betties take of and the first wave alone puts 6 torpedoes into the great ship and she goes straight down with all here ac!
There were only 5 Wildcats on CAP..big mistake David! 20 fighters may have saved the ship. 16 Betties were downed by flak
and CAP.

This is why I'm not using naval bombers to bomb Karachi and other cities very often - they're ship killers, period! And there's nothing like sinking
enemy carriers

I wouldn't have operated cv's alone..they become vulnerable then - so 2 is a minimum. At least for expensive fleet carriers!
A 5 ac CAP indicates a setting of 20% (27/100*20 = 5.4) The cv strikes that were launched yesterday had only 6 Wildcat escorts, so I'm not
sure what happened, but I'll take it any day.

This means that there are only 3 US and one UK cv left in the Pacific and I got 6 cvs and 3 cvls.
It should be possible to recapture all of Java - and Timor if I play my cards right.

Told David that he probably had to invade Japan in 45-46 in order to win, I got 35k points to 9.5 now and I will bag a lot of troops in the months to come.
But this may actually make the game interesting for many years to come

Another double update!

Forts in Karachi are reduced to 2, odds are still bad and I will rest my troops for 2-3 days
and then order first a deliberate and then a shock attack to break the defenders.

The KB has been sent back towards Singapore and 25 trained Zero replacements have
been landed aboard the Kaga. In all 70 KB fighters were lost in Op. Sumo but non of the
carriers suffered damage.

A heavy cruiser, the Hawkins appeared in Karachi and was immediately blown up and sunk.
Strange ship, single 7.5" guns. Definetly not a lucky ship - teleporting into Karachi at this time
of the year just isn't healthy....

More construction engineers are being moved out of China, not much more to build there.
They've been told to prepare for several different bases in the Phillippines, New Guinea and
other inner defense perimeter bases. In a year or two we should have fortified most of them.

Another full Kwantung Army Division has been moved to Pusan and the 3 regiments ordered to
prepare for Saipan, Guam and Tinian. The first of them has already been loaded and shipped out.

In a few months I hope to put 50 Tony/Tojos on several of my main bases in order to cut down
Allied medium and heavy bombers. So my defenses are slowly getting in place.

A 1-1 odds was achieved in Karachi today and the enemy took more than 4000 casualties,
almost twice as many as we did. When I checked my units, they had not cancelled their 'deliberate attack'
orders. This is the sign I've been waiting for, this is the right time to order a shock attack that will break the enemy
once and for all... It worked in Ahmadabad and we got almost 4 times as many troops as the enemy.

The next turn will certainly be interesting

The shock attack only achieved a 1-1 odds, so I have to continue bombarding and attacking for another few days.
Tomorrow a fresh division and tank regiment will arrive, and after my battleships delivers another round of shells, we'll give
it another try.

A few Beauforts managed to take off today - and ofcourse - they scored a hit on the Hiei. This ship had 30 sys damage already,
this was brought up to 43 + 27 flood. She's now heading home to the repair yards to join her sisters.

The KB is passing by Ceylon now, looking forward to get Nagumo back to the Pacific - then we can protect our assets better.
A large transport fleet is going the other way to pick up the division in India that will return to the DEI and central Pacific soon.

In NG I've sent a 35 ac Tony Daitai to Wewak, slowly putting an air defense in place. Will still be some time before I can
return enough Zeros to the central Pacific to oppose the Allied bombers.

I spotted a surface tf heading for Shortland yesterday, cancelled a barge mission and put some Betties

now very angry Yorktown escort However, I managed to sneak in an AK and load the single damaged

The number of defenders at Karachi is dwindling away very quickly. I had estimated that all
of September would be needed to reduce it, seems like that was a good bet. Trying another deliberate
attack already tomorrow as most of the divisions have reduced their fatigue.

Heavy raids in the southern part of the DEI and Timor as well as in the Marshalls and NG.
Got 100 Tojos in the pools now, but unfortunately I can't upgrade the Nate units that are stored
around the Empire as they're all slated to receive an inferior ac in 4 months

Hm another 4.5k Allied casualties in Karachi, but still only a 1-1 odds. Strange, got 5 times more troops now.
Well, at this rate it can't POSSIBLE continue for more than another few days *tired of India now*

Going to start new training grounds in India for my mauled Zero Daitais soon....)

Some Betties in NG went after shipping in PM - a few days ago I spotted a ship at Thursday Island and tried to
get at it. Bet David read that you can launch B17's towards Rabaul from there in Hoepner's AAR

And you wonder why it is only 1 to 1? But heres the bright side: that division has plenty of support available!

Do you watch the ground combat animation? Are you getting a fat 1 to 1 (like AV 1950 vs 1000) or a skinny 1 to 1 (AV 1050 vs 1000)? If it's a skinny one, I'd say it could take some time yet. I know I'd be resting that division unless I was real close to 2 to 1.

Irrelevant, do you know what key to hit during the animation to see the AV numbers? Or do you add them up in your head as you're watching it?

Thanks, Brad
