I got a sub that should have arrived at Hiroshima/Kure several days ago..it still got '1 days remaining'!?
Anyone know the reason for this? All my other ship constructions are proceeding according to schedule and there
are 5 spare naval construction points left.

If you only have 5 points remaining, it is almost certainly because you are spending more naval construction points per turn than your naval construction yards are creating. When you try to spend more than you have available, the construction AI will pick one or more projects to put on hold. The status does not change, it just does not advance. It is usually one of the most expensive ships under construction.

Don't forget that when you have a ship accelerated, it is costing you 3X (not just 2X) its durability per day.

I hope there's no enemy SigInt in this thread, or else this operation would be FUBAR'd.

This will be a classic example of diversion, distraction, destruction tactic. Seeing that David has quite a number of heavy bombers in Gilberts region, I suppose those bases are quite developed and well supplied. In other words, ripe for picking, while you still can.
I think that you shouldn't be satisfied with holding India and liberating Java again, as this doesn't give you much of a defensive perimeter. So go ahead and undertake another major, decisive operation before he gets too strong in half a year or so.
Gilberts are logical choice. Close to your well developed bases, yet far from his. Additionaly, his forces are tied up in Java and Solomons, also I guess he has considerable forces in Northern Oz, just to be sure.

So what I would suggest is this:
Divide your carriers in two groups - in one, smaller, put some carriers that were originally in KB - Akagi, Kaga or Shokaku for example, plus a few others, just to be safe from his carriers. Send this one in Java area. Put all others in second TF and send them to Marshalls.
Simultaneosly with commencing land operations on Java, go for a walk with your Java carriers just off North-western Oz. Assign some Vals & Kates to naval search, so he knows what's there. Let him think you'll hit his Oz bases or support Java operations. This will gain you 2 advantages - he will be reluctant to send reinforcements to Java, and also make him anxious about your carriers' moves as he'd probably think KB has come to play.
Wait a few days for him to react, than swing the katana full force on Gilberts - send in your second, larger carrier TF at flank speed from Marshalls area, moving at 10-12 hexes per turn, so he'll never knew what hit him. Unleash all your force on largest airfield, probably Tarawa. Put it out of action, then move on to another. Support them with LBA from Marshalls. If you spot his carriers, and there's a good probability you will, make them priority targets. After you give his local airforce some justice, move in with bombardment TFs. You just got Yamato, so put those 18" in action. Stay a while and reduce his LCUs combat power, and then, after a week or so from operation's start, go in with invasion TF. You should capture quite a pile of supplies/fuel, and destroy a sizeable chunk of his heavies. I presume he would also base some P38s there, so sending them to Sto'vo'Kor wouldn't hurt, too. Being exposed bases that they are, he almost certanly has some surface forces there, maybe a BB or two, so giving your Kates some torpedo practice would be nice.

In terms of LCUs, this shouldn't be costly, so your main force can still concentrate on Java and beyond. And with some veteran divisions from India, US troops on Java should become mosquito-food fairly quickly.

Also, if you don't achieve an autovictory by 01/43, or you agree to continue playing, dealing a blow in CenPac will give you big advantage in coming months.

So...whatcha think? I see this as a perfectly devious plan, spot-on with Japanse tactics and general doctrine.

it's late '42. Very late '42. This means Allies now have (or can have in a turn) massive airpower in the gilberts.
I don't know how accurate his Intel is about those bases, but i would expect by any decent player that if he developes a base and send there supplies/aircrafts that he moved also lot of engineers and also some land units. This means:
1) you can't hope to close down airfields for more than 1 or 2 days
2) if he has developed to lvl 4 all islands near tarawa, it means you have no chance to close down all gilberts
3) that if he brought 1 div or more in tarawa and with forts lvl 9 you need lot of stuff to win (they are atolls so shock attack rule applies here).

So it could be done. but a proper plan would require the whole navy/air and most of land units to not run any risk (and this assumed you do know how much land units he got there).
Obviously, if Pzb has a better intel then he can try both operations. Personally i think advancing in central pacific in october '42 is a little too risky for little gains.

My advice: take Java and then set for pro-active defence trying to be ready to react to his first attacks with massive force.

Nice plan Calidor
There is a lot of sense in the plan, but there are some problems! First of all I do not have enough ground troops
as most of my divisions are slated for Java, Ceylon and Timor. As Kaiser points out, David has developed the bases
in the Gilberts and it would be impossible for me to close them. (Take a look at the map I attached today!)
Yamato still got 40 sys damage and I only got a few fully operational battleships. I think 8 got more than 20 sys damage...

I do have a few plans of my own, but they do not involve any overly aggressive moves this late in the war.

Irrelevant: I thought that as long as there is a spare naval production capacity no ships will be delayed?
I accelerated the cl Agano and the available production points fell from 10 to 3 as far as I can remember.

Judging from this image, most of his strike A/C are probably on Tarawa and Apamama, so an early and unexpected strike could catch most of them on ground. I doubt he would base bombers on Nauru or Makin, as that would incure them penalties, and even if he tries in subsequent turns, he'd have to pack them full of strike A/C to make a dent in your CAP - and that means they can be more easly destroyed on the ground.
If you don't have enough troops for invasion, I would still go ahead with air/bombardment strikes in hopes of catching his BBs/CVs, and destroying a piece of his airforce. Also, once you seriously damage those airfields, you could easily keep them damaged with Betties flying from Marshalls. If you don't react, you're facing a possible early Allied dash to Marshalls, and from there, it's open sea to Marianas.

Any plan should be evaluated in gain and risk. Here the risk is high: he can lose some very valuable asset (a CV, a BB, many top notch pilots?) and the gain is low. yes, in the best scenario you can catch some aircrafts in the ground. so what? Allies at that date have already no problems refilling the squadrons.

If really tarawa is so important (but can't see why, he doesn't really need tarawa to invade north of tarawa, he can come from east), then delay Java and bring the full firepower of Japan Land and Navy. that is problably something David is not expecting (David is prolly expecting attack at Java).
I still think that's too risky though. if David is keeping Navy and air at tarawa, it means he feels confident there. this means you need to bring the whole thing to have some good chances to win.

It's a really interesting discussion - thanx guys!

The Yanks really got so many pilots and ac that it is not worth attacking them unless the situation
is ideal! I already got 40400 points to 10400 and the fall of 30+k troops at Colombo will provide me with a 4-1 odds in early 43.
I don't give this much thought though - I'm certain that David wants to continue the game and bring the war to Japan.

What I want to do is to maintain my superiority in carriers as long as possible. If I am skilled and lucky it could be possible to
knock out so many US birdfarms that it will be 1944 before David finally achieves supremacy of the seas.

Over the next 8 months I will receive 4 cvs and 1 cvl - add my existing 6 cvs and 3 cvls to this force and you really got a force
to be reckoned with. I plan to hunt down enemy surface groups between PH and the Coral Sea when the opportunity shows itself.
Superior force will be a must in order to sustain as few casualties as possible.

I did something similar in an UV game and managed to destroy all of the Allied carriers by the end of 1943 without loosing a single
KB carrier. My amph ground troops will mostly be used in a defensive or counter attack role.

PzB,

Great AAR (both you and David BTW), I am learning a lot. Please keep it up.

One question: I see you have 2 SS in Nauru. Granted, it's level 2 port and yank ships are not protected, but isn't it dangerous to stay in shallow waters? Also, won't you be spotted/attacked by any escorts that enter? Last (phew!) do you usually operate SS in pairs, I thought it gave you a disadvantage in being spotted.

TIA

OK, if it comes down to choosing between CenPac & Java, you should probably go for Java. I haven't played any PBEMs yet, so I can't really determine what a human player can bring on at the moment. Maybe my expirience vs AI has clouded my judgement.

But seeing how David is very careful player, decisive action against a single point of interest should be succesfull. And in case of Tarawa, holding it would grant you a 1.800 mile circle of no-shipping zone, amidst a fairly busy lanes. Anything that goes beyond, towards Marianas, NG or PI, must either take a large swing or face a walk down a Betty alley.

Regarding naval construction, my own experience is that the game engine will build the ships in the database order, like in the following example:

You have 350 points and are building in database order a BB (250 points), two CL (accelerated, 30 points x 2 each), a DD (12 points) and two submarines (25 points each).

First the game checks the BB. It has 350 points available and the BB needs 250. So it's built (one day less in the list) and date of release remains the same. 350-250 = 100 naval points remaining.

Then it checks the first CL. It has 100 points available and the ship needs 60. So it's built (two day less in the list, as it is accelerated) and date of release is advanced one day. 100 - 60 = 40 naval points remaining.

Then it checks the second CL. It has 40 points available and the ship needs 60. This ship won't be built this turn, not even at normal rate, and date of release is "repulsed" one day. Still 40 naval points remaining.

Then it checks the DD. It has 40points available and the DD needs 12. So it's built (one day less in the list) and date of release remains the same. 40-12 = 28 naval points remaining.

Then it checks the first SS. It has 28 points available and the ship needs 25. So it's built (one day less in the list) and date of release remains the same. 28 - 25 = 3 naval points remaining.

Then it checks the second SS. It has 3 points available and the ship needs 25. This ship won't be built this turn and date of release "repulsed" one day. 3 naval points remaining at the end of the turn, that may be used the next turn.

So you may see some naval points remaining while not all ships were built this turn. If the remaining points are above 50and growing, that means probably that all your ships were built this turn and you have an extra output of shipyard points and can accelerate or restart some ships.

AFAIK, CV are first in the DB, BB next and SS last. AUX and CVE ships use merchant ships points.

Now that I think about it more, I'm sure you are right (everything else in this game seems to happen in DB order!). I never had any of my own ships not advance; if I don't have enough points I halt something myself instead.

BTW, I use those excellent IJN ship spreadsheets you made all the time. They are what I based my shipbuilding management tools on.

You're welcome. My own method is first letting both pools grow up to 500 points and then increase/decrease production of ships to stay around this number. I use my Excel sheets only for checking wich ships are currently building.

Thx for the updates Laurent and Irrelevant! I must have misunderstood the concept of naval construction points.
I do get more points every day so it still doesn't make sence. Not easy to know which ships that will be delayed with
this far from intuitive arrangement

Hi Coralsaw - thx for the praise I had 2 subs in the vicinity of Nauru, then I spotted an enemy tf and ordered both of my subs
to intercept. This led them both to the island proper but they were moved out again yesterday. It is dangerous to move your boats
into shallow water but if you spot a weakly escorted convoy or valuable targets, it may be worth the risk.

Usually I only got one sub in one hex, but I have started an experiment were I have based 6 subs around a sub that is equipped with a
floatplane. When an enemy tf is spotted all of the subs will attempt to intercept.

My Betties are very effective according to David This turned reported that 2 msw and 1 ak sank.

We have installed the new V1.5 patch and things are looking good
David has finally managed to turn the Allied sub doctrine OFF! Guess I better prepare for unrestricted sub warfare....

A lot of air units with the wrong type of leaders (e.g. fighter unit with bomber leader) have to be changed. This will be done
a little by little.

I've started to ship troops out of Karachi: 75 transports have formed into 4 TF's. Will take a while to get most of my men back
to Singapore, but in 3-4 weeks we should be ready to move against Timor and Java.

In our last game Blackwatch chewed up a couple of my B17 raids with Tony's as well. So I think this was possible in 1.4 too.

Either way this is the second game where I have seen Tonys do some damage to the 4 engine bombers.

Been busy lately, not had time to upgrade the AAR - so here you got 4 days in one!
Only 3 more weeks and school's out forever

Situation Report

Tomorrow my battleships will start hitting Colombo! 2 full divisions will reach Trimcomalee within
a week. I have sent more AP's to Karachi as there are still 2 divisions and several supportive units awaiting transportation.

My search plane equipped sub spotted an enemy Cv tf heading east below PH yesterday, my wolf pack failed to intercept.
David will be going for vacation tomorrow, so there will only be one more update for a time to come....

Certainly Hornblower, couldn't fit all of India into one screenshot, but there's nothing to see but Jap bases

David wondered why his coastal arty didn't fire on my bombardment group today.
I've never had coastal guns fire back on battleships before, the same happened in Karachi!

So now you have 2 weeks for plotting & scheming devious plans.
Care to share some ideas? R U gonna listen to my suggestion, or have another juicy operation in mind? Or maybe just settle with what you have and start digging in?

Still very busy days around here so I'll just provide a quick update for the last 3-4 turns!

In India more transports have arrived at Karachi and continues to move troops back to Singapore. A few Allied straggler units have tried to
infiltrate my bases, but I got a regiment in most of them and has been able to dispatch of them.

My troops are now marching towards Colombo while my battleships and bombers continues to reduce the defenders.
This got a double purpose since several large troop convoys are sailing past the island now. In only a few weeks we will be ready to land
troops in Java and secure the left flank by the end of the year.

Most of my air units have been rebuilt and trained and I'm now building up the pools. I was down to 0 Zero's ..and that's only zero I don't want!

In the central Pacific I'm building bases and moving in fresh troops and supplies on a daily basis. I've lost 3 subs in the last few days, two were destroyed
by a lightly escorted convoy..so I can't use my subs to hunt enemy convoys, even not those that are not in range of ac. Another sub was lost as it mined Perth,
it took an msw with it though. Seems like the patch switched Allied sub doctrine off and put the Japanese one on.... So now I will use my remaining boats for mining,
recon and screening duties. It's mostly after big battles that they come in handy.

I've moved most of my fleet carriers to Truk, a few even sortied down towards Lunga but were spotted and ordered to return. I don't want to slug it out with LBA...
The plan is to repair and upgrade the Kagas and Shokakus, the rest are in fine shape and will support the operations in the DEI.

Otherwise I'm happy to build my strength and prepare for the battles to come - I want as many highly experienced pilots and ships as possible for 1943 - which I think
will be an interesting year

My life is almost back to normal...hurrah!
Here's the last couple of days from the front!

2 divisions and an engineer regiment have moved into Colombo, the rest of
the army will join them in a few days. The battleship bombardment force has
been sent back to Singapore. In less than a week I will start moving troops to
Java and destroy the Allied presence there.

Operations against Timor will also be carried out, I should be able to bring
overwhelming force to bear. We're into November now and I would like to
conclude business by New Years Eve...

The first Irving recon planes have arrived at the front and upgraded a unit equipped
with obsolete Babs.

Not a lot of enemy capital ships around, so I don't think the operations against Java
will be contested. My lba, navy and carriers will handle any potential threat.

Another large transport convoy arrived in Karachi today and started loading another
2 divisions and 4 tank regiments. In all 5 divisions will remain in India.

I'm trying to build fuel and supply in as many different bases as possible. This will make
it easier to defend them against future assaults and provide staging bases for counter-offensives.

The large fleet carriers in Truk are getting much needed repairs and the first two will soon
move back to Japan for upgrades.

Another double update!

In todays situation map you can see the different bases in the south DEI.
I'm building Macasar, a size 3 af just above Kendari. Should provide me with a chain
of mutually supporting bases - the only way to counter the Allied medium/heavy bomber
threat.

Troops are now being moved to Java and Balikpapan and within 10 days or so major
offensive operations in the area will take place against enemy troops in Java and Timor.
This will be the final Japanese invasion of 1942 and will conclude a series of successful
operations.

For Timor I got one brigade, the South Seas Detachment, an engineer regiment and 2 para
regiments ready for action. The 3rd Car Div (Junyo and Hiyo) supported by 3 cvl's and 2 cs will
provide air support for the operation. A force of battleships, cruisers and destroyers will also
be made available.

The plan is for a join ops against Java and Timor - the fleet will stay north of Timor and thus
be in a good position to intercpet any enemy attempts to intervene.

Another regiment has been released from the Kwantung Army and is loading for Tinian.
A large engineer regiment has been unloaded at Hansa in New Guinea together with vast amounts
of supplies. This is another step in the process of building a linked chain of bases along the east coast
of the island.
