I see you get several Divs and Bdes in the PI in 216 days.
What happens if you don't own those bases then ? I assume those reinforcements are 'lost' - like the Allied ones for Karachi.

I hope it doesn't happen - I'm confident his attacks will founder against your main line of defense.

I assume the divisions will appear in Tokyo instead, but I'm not sure of that. Much better to get them straight into the Philippines.
But it is as I say: you got to hold the Allies back according to the historical time line in order to receive enoug reinforcements to hold
back the storm. This is exceedingly difficult as WitP allows both sides to advance so quickly!

The Jack

Received several really nice air units today including a 72, 48, 36 Zeke unit - and of course -
this 48 ac Jack interecptor Hikotai! These 200 ac will boost my defensive capasity tremendously.
Keeping 36 Zekes in Tokyo, the rest are going to the Marianas. Another 27 Betty bombers also arrived, going
to China for advanced training. Don't want to send bombers with less than 70+ exp out against enemy warships
as they're not going to hit anything.

Background on the 'Jack'

Known to the Allies as Jack, the Mitsubishi J2M was designed by a team directed by Jiro Horikoshi, designer of the legendary A6M Zero. It was the first Japanese Navy fighter to be built specifically to operate from land bases. The project began unofficially in 1938, when the first ideas about a Navy fighter with an improved design and better speed capabilities were discussed between Mitsubushi and the Japanes Navy High Command. The project, whose requirements were issued in 1939, was delayed due to technical difficulties and also to the development of the A6M Zero fighter in that time. The first tests with the prototype (J2M1) did not begin until March 1942, and Mitsubishi still had to face further difficulties with the engine and visibility.

After these problems were solved, the Navy formally adopted the so-called J2M2 Navy Interceptor Fighter Raiden (Thunderbolt) Model 11 in October 1942. But production went slow and by mid-1943 only 17 Raidens had been delivered to the Navy. It was not until the autumn of that year that the newly formed 381st Kokutai (Air Group) at Toyohashi, southeast of Nagoya, began equipping with the plane. At about this time, the improved J2M3 Model 21 entered production. Retaining the Kasei 23a engine, the J2M3 (numerically the most important type of Raiden) had a stronger wing structure allowing a heavier armament. The two fuselage 7.7mm machine guns were deleted, and four 20mm cannon were installed in the wings. Although Mitsubishi built several improved versions (J2M3a, J2M4, J2M5 and J2M6), none of them could avoid technical problems so that the plane could be produced in growing numbers to help in the outcome of the war.

The Raiden first saw action in September 1944 over the Marianas during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. It was also used at Formosa, but it would become famous in the defense of the Japanese home islands against unescorted B-29 day raids. Its good performance, powerful armament, and armor protection made it perhaps the best bomber destroyer employed by Japan in the latter stages of the war. The pilots of 302nd Naval Air Group based on Atsugi air base showed the most brilliant record. The Raiden unit distinguished itself by shooting down a total of about 300 enemy planes in the short period from the end of 1944 to the end of the war.

That must be a bad joke: is WitP's Jack really carrier capable as said in your squadron sheet?!
And they never corrected it...?

I think all IJN fighters are carrier capable - just like all USNA are! That doesn't mean I'm going to put
anything but Zero/Zekes' on my carriers.

That's just nonsense from the OOB maker!
I mean, Catalinas are run by the Navy too, that's not a reason to put them on a "carrier capable" basis
The plane is a land-based plane, point - when you take a look at its service records, indeed it's better that they never tried to land it on a carrier

Are you supposed to receive Ki-100 in 1945 too? Super-tony will be a hell of a fighter too me thinks, at least if its perfs in WitP are not biased

hi, PzB...

What are your plans for defence of the NG/PI/Marians?

I do know your overall plan, but interested in details? do you consider using your Navy for bombardments run when Allies capture base(s) in NG? Or for intercepting enemy invasion forces? or you will keep them in the safe waters? Where is last stand for your Navy (Philipines like was historicaly, Marians?)

Using them in "elastic defence" should be possible - Andy is short with ships. And in my oppinion NG would be best place to use them - Andy could count only on Lae/Rabaul AFs for support.

And there is lot's of benefits for you:

- delaying him cause he needs to repair base
- spending supply (which is more important - there is only trail trough northern NG)
- disrupting his units (malaria zone, right? - so after capturing NG he must sent those units to nearest malaria free zone for recuperate. And where is nearest temp zone base - Australia? Noumea?) ok, he have enough units so he can probably rotate them and try advance even further but don't think he should broke your main defencive line then.

PS.. be carefully where you place Jacks and Georges - it would be a really shame that allied bombardment force ruins these new groups. IMO they should be good against 4E bombers so placing them in base under threat of these monsters won't be bad soluion.

Just my thoughts...

Maintenance wasn't the problem. Landing onboard a carrier without a tailhook would be the problem. The Jack was never equipped with one and had no provisions for later installation as the tail was not stressed for it.

I thought the tailhook thing was obvious enough in my thought - talking about "landing on a carrier" i was talking about the carrier-borne adaption too, in addition to its several structural and mechanical problems. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough

Not to talk about other problems, as its relatively poor visibility when landing or the engine instability...

I agree that only the Zeke should be a carrier capable ac. It's easy to correct with a house rule though.
As long as Andy keeps his Corsairs off his carriers I'll keep my George and Jacks on dry land
The Tony '100' will arrive in early 45, hope it's as capable as it's supposed to be Fishbed!

Difficult questions Pauk! My plans are..flexible and depends on Andy's approach!
Until Wewak is captured the Palau's will be out of enemy heavy bomber range - after that I will consider moving
my main fleet anchorage from Ulithi to Saipan. If the threat of enemy carrier raids grows the main fleet base may
be moved back to Manila. Davao can also be used as a forward base - port size 5.

For now I'm trying to get the Combined Fleet back to optimal strength: several cruisers, battleships, carriers and
destroyers are undergoing repairs. I don't want wear and tear to leave me with a rusty blade, going to need a sharp
edge in 44. But the occasional hit and run attack, perhaps even a carrier strike will be used to hit the enemy's
spearheads and flanks when he advance up the coast of Guinea.

If possible I'd like to engage Andy in a decisive battle for the Marianas: the fleet would be ordered to engage if it
became possible to engage the enemy on an even basis. My carriers may play a more..diffuse role though. I'm thinking
about using it to ferry strike ac to the Marianas and act as a decoy with all its fighters put on 100% CAP. Forcing the
US carriers to strike from 5 hexes could be beneficial. I don't think the Kido Butai would fare well in a major encounter with
a US death star carrier fleet in 44. It's vital to keep the KB intact for as long as possible: just as Tirpitz its mere
presence will force the enemy to be cautious and tie up large naval formations.

If a decisive battle in the Marianas isn't possible we will wait until the Philippine islands are invaded. The combined strength
of army and navy ac - including Kamikaze's supported by a strong Combined Fleet will make life difficult for Andy

12 November
Solomon Islands - In the Treasury Islands the 8th Brigade of the New Zealand 3rd Division wipes out all enemy resistance in the
island of Mono. The Japanese loose 205 dead, the New Zealanders and Americans 52.
New Britain - The Japanese withdraw the carrier-based aircraft reinforcements from Rabaul. The Japanese base no longer represents
any serious danger to the Allies.

13 November
Pacific - The southern group for the invasion of the Gilbert Islands sails from the New Hebrides. American Flying Fortresses taking off
from Funafuti bomb Tarawa atoll. There is little resistance from fighters but a powerful anti-aircraft barrage.
Solomon Islands - On Bougainville the Americans attack Japanese positions at the crossing between the Numa Numa track and the track running
east to west. The cruiser Denver is damaged of Bougainville by a torpedo from a Japanese aircraft.

14 November
Solomon Islands - The Americans on Bougainville resume their attacks on the crossroads manned by the Japanese, this time supported by five
tanks, and succeeds in taking it. Their defensive perimeter is thus widened and the safety of the airfield that they are to build is guaranteed.

Overview: the Philippines

Been a while since we looked at the Philippines! As you can see I'm busy reinforcing the bases there.
I'm bringing construction units to all bases with AF size 3 and above. These will receive base units and supplies
and a garrison. Within a few months the entire region will be turned into a large military camp. In 6-7 months 7 divisions
and brigades will arrive and complete these preparations. 2 armoured divisions are already in place and 3 aviation regiments
and 3 base forces are only weeks away. Minelayers are also operating out of Manila.

Similar preparations are taking place on a smaller scale on Borneo. In a few days 2 brigades will arrive in Bangkok and Camrahn Bay.
These will be allowed to stay as there are woefully few combat units in this area.

Most disturbing news in China - Andy has scrounged enough supplies to upgrade an British bomber
formation in China to B-24 Liberators. At first I thought he had managed to move them in from Australia.
Such a development worried the High Command and saber rattlers in the Army talked about resuming offensive
operations. For now we will step up the bomber offensive and try to keep the airfields closed.

A squadron of Chinese Warhawks managed to operate from damaged airfields and shot down a handful of Zekes
on training missions. Really difficult to chop the heads of this troll!

November 16
Pacific - Since 13 November, US heavy bombers have been attacking the Gilbert and Marshall Islands every
day, dropping 173 tons of bombs on military installations.
New Guinea - The Australian 9th Division, with support from the air, heavy artillery and tanks, begins operations
to eliminate the Sattelberg strongpoint, north of Finschafen, where the nature of the terrain favors the defenders.

What do you think of the following plan; If Andy attempts an amphibious landing in the Marianas/Palaus/Philippines the following plan will be executed:

Stage 1 The enemy fleets arrive and start bombarding their target while carrier fighters fight it out with the local CAP
Stage 2 The KB is loaded up with 1000 good fighters and set to 90% CAP and sails within range of the enemy carriers. LBA should already
have reduced the number of enemy fighters and fatigue should be on the raise.
Stage 3 Large number of reserve LBA (fighters and bombers) are sent to the threatened sector while the remaining KB carriers take aboard dive and torpedo bombers.
Surplus carrier units will supplement the land based ac.
Stage 4 The surface fleet moves in to intercept the landings as the air battles reaches a climax.
Stage 5 The enemy is defeated and forced to withdraw

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/17/43

Chinese Warhawks withdrew into the interior...will direct a few heavy bomber strikes
there as soon as I can bring some long range A6M2 Zero's in. Still got a trained group in China.

I hope he will not rather try out a hit and run strategy against you, that would be somewhat painful - something that happened in Japan or in Taiwan for instance in 1944, just about coming, wiping out planes and going away in two little days. At least it would be my way of dealing with it, in order to weaken you enough before the true invasion...
The other problem are the AI priorities: if he comes in force, how to be sure that not half your strikes will be directed against transports or support TF instead of the carriers? Maybe as long as you are sinking ships and killing US troops it doesnt matter that much, but still...

Probably an Essex Class - Lexingtons have their bow totally closed, and Yorktown/Wasp bows don't look like that neither...

Checked some Essex, but the ones with launching photos I saw had no anchors set yet.

Good work Hawker You get the honor of voluenteering for the Empire's first Kaiten torpedoes!

It will indeed be difficult to carry out such a plan; circumstances will decide how it all goes down.
I'm still going to try to preserve my best fighters and bombers for the 'second round' if you get me.

Soon I've replaced the 300 Oscar IIs we lost: they will man the front lines together with a part of our good
fighter and bomber formations. If Andy wants to conduct a hit and run he will have to risk his best ships
for very little gain. The Philippines will become the armory from were reserves will be drawn. Capturing
one of the bases in the main defensive zone will take weeks at best - so there should be more than enough time.

Today I 'found' 3 Sally bombers and crews in Phnom Penn - they've been sitting there for almost
2 years as the base force moved out. Explains why one of my Sally Daitai's never would fill out
Imagine being awol for almost 2 years, must be a record....

When I asked Andy how he managed to upgrade his Chinese air unit he said:
"Yup but my Chinese Airgropups when withdrawn are returnng upgraded albeit with 0 aircraft.
So free upgrade of I 16's to P40N's and SB2's to B25J's. The Libs were always there just had zero aircraft.
"

Is it only me or does this sound fishy to you as well?

Andy is moving back into Tenimbar, the small island just north of Darwin. Not going to

Sounds like the truth to me - at least the part about the "free" upgrades. When i've withdrawn units, they often come back with 0 aircraft, and so you can make them whatever you like (in what's available). But it's not like you pay PPs to upgrade (at least not in the standard game). You just have to have the aircraft available.

Andy also finds the 'glitch' to be unrealistic and explains it the following way:

"The way it apparently works is if you withdraw units and when they return there are no aircraft of the correct type
in the pool then the program looks 1 down the upgrade path then one up.

Given that i16's and SB2's havent got a downgrade option they go to next upgrade which is B25J's and P40N's.
Its totally wrong especially when there are no outside LOC's.
"

I've promised to stay away from Chengtu - the northernmost Chinese base - if he doesn't use his new ac in an offensive role.
I'm only interested in pacifying China. 200 bombers and 60 fighters are standing ready to crush this last bastion if necessary.

Hundreds of ac have now finished their training in China and will be redeployed to the Philippines and Marianas.
The crack division that is heading for Palau from India will be used as a tactical reserve, I expect something nasty is going to
happen anytime soon. Still rebuilding my transport fleet, takes time to replace 200 Topsy's when only 70 units arrive each month.

19 November
Pacific - Carrier-borne aircraft pound the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands and Nauru in preparation for the coming invasion.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/19/43

Air Combat

More interesting to show the Jap air strikes. Allied air activity concentrates
on the Marshalls: Kwajalein in particular.

Day Air attack on 7th Naval Construction Battalion, at 39,80

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 10
Ki-21 Sally x 24

Vehicles lost 2

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 10000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This little Val unit got an average exp of 55...doesn't hit anything. So never bother to
send naval bombers into action against enemy capital ships unless they got 70+ exp.

Day Air attack on TF, near Mussau Island at 60,83

Japanese aircraft

Allied Ships
AK Cape Henry, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:

Again, too quiet...don't like it! Very few ships around and even the heavies seems to be roaming around
half hearted. Sending more Glen equipped subs around the Pacific.

Receiving a lot of new ac and production is peaking - it's really difficult to increase ac engine output to
meet demands. The need for new aviation regiments is especially hight: another couple of months before new ones
arrive. Have to withdraw base force units from besieged bases - can't afford to loose them all.

20 November
Pacific - Start of Operation Galvanic. More than 100 warships, transports and landing craft of all kinds approach
the atolls of Tarawa and Makin, in the Gilbert Islands, during the night. For some time the Japanese have been building
up the fortifications of these two islets, especially Tarawa, where Rear Admiral Keichi Shibasaki has 5000 men, as well as
400 specialists, on the airfield and a certain number of Korean labourers turned into auxilliary riflemen. Guns of all calibres,
from 37mm to 203mm, light tanks dug in, well-camouflaged pillboxes, beach obstacles and huge bunkers covered in earth and sand
many feet deep make the atoll an extremely difficult objective, and its capture costs the Americans dear.
Solomon Islands - On Bougainville the 3rd Marine Division extends its position near the river Piva after
overcoming the last enemy resistance. The 37th Division broadens the defensive perimeter of the beachhead without
coming in contact with the enemy.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/20/43

Air Combat

Truk can really withstand a heavy pounding - the last couple of raids didn't do much damage.
Time to move 250 fighters in and blow Andy out of the skies!?

Day Air attack on Truk , at 63,78

This is mightily annoying: 7 crack Jill torpedo bombers can't hit a derelict freighter
Day Air attack on TF, near Mussau Island at 60,83

B6N Jill x 7

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
AK Cape Henry, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x B6N Jill launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x B6N Jill launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Are you saying his stuff upgraded even though no aircraft of that type were in the pool??

When that happened to me - i just got no a/c, although i didn't try it with the Chinese...
