Status: offline 		As the Allies, you can have a Air Unit select (I-16) the Upgrade you want to upgrade selected (P-40N) (but don't click on the "upgrade now" option) and then withdraw that unit. When it comes back, it does so as the unit you selected. If there are those units available.
More game mechanics to deal with.

ok - if it only comes back if those units are available (and by this i assume you mean they are present in the aircraft pool) i don't see what the problem is. If they came back and the planes were NOT in the pool, that would be a problem!

Status: offline 		The problem is that it requires a base with 20k supplies to upgrade an ac type. Andy says that the 4 remaining bases in China
have some 30k supplies between them! Supplies are used to simulate a lot of processes in WitP: including acquiring, fueling,
operating and maintaining ac.

China is also isolated as India and Burma are captured and it would be impossible to get these new ac into China.
I've put in a lot of effort to destroy China's resource depots to prevent them from upgrading their ac models. The 'glitch' nullifies
all these efforts.

Status: offline 		Yes but still, PzB, you know how unrealistical it sounds to have India and Pakistan fearing only invasion from Autralia while at this time Iran is completly under allied rule, not talking about your "pilot farms" in China that do not look that realistic neither - in my opinion, that's still a little game glitch traded for much larger ones on your side
Find them, kill them, that will be real training for your boys!

Status: offline 		That's also true - but using one wrong to justify another isn't exactly perfect either

The use of 'pilot farms' for Japan is a must since air combat is so exceedingly bloody and the US got an in-exhaustable pilot pool.
Aircraft type is also much more important than pilot skills, so the latter is a must to achieve even the historical 1-10 loss ratio in 1944.
Not talking about getting a bomber through a large Allied CAP: the number of leakers is close to nill compared to 50 or so in the real 'Marianas Turkey Shoot'.

So unfortunately it takes a glitch to fix a glitch..and the disruption of my training camps in China would upset this fragile 'terror balance' if you get
my meaning. WitP is much about improvising and keeping things running - one way or another. That is a great and intriguing challenge alone, most enjoyable - most of the time

21 November
Gilbert Islands- At dawn, with new waves of Marines approaching the Betio beaches in Tarawa, all hell breaks
loose again. Vice-Admiral Spruance, commander of the operation, has heard reports from several unit commanders during the night.
Some of them have suggested that the operation be called off and the forces re-embarked, but in view of the great strategic importance
of the objective Spruance is determined to proceed. American carrier-borne aircraft give effective support to the troops on the island,
who are able to deploy field guns and shell the Japanese positions all day and to make a little progress. During the day small American
units land on other islets in the Tarawa atoll. On Makin atoll, again with support from aircraft, artillery and naval guns, the 165th Infantry
launch an assault on Butaritari Island and seize several Japanese fortified positions. Small units land on the islet of Kuma, carry out reconnaissance
and withdraw.

Status: offline 		I don't know...is it gamey...yeah...but I kinda laugh at anyone he yells about wanting a realistic game (no I'm not refering to you PZB) and then the first thing they do is insist that we turn off Japanse sub ops.

It is what it is...a close simulation of the Pacific War. If more people could take a step back enjoy it for what it is...there would be a lot less complaints.

Andy said the awaited Allied offensive started today. Didn't notice anything special...
Will let him push and exhaust his supplies, wear down his ships and men before taking much
action this time.

Been using the 'lull' to move supplies into New Guinea and several island in the Marshalls
as well as to Wake and Marcus Islands. Several stockpiles are being built up all around the Pacific
to support the movement of heavy fleet units.

Two brigades could be released from Java as reinforcements arrived - moving them to New Guinea.
Camrahn Bay, Saigon and Bangkok have also received garrison units.

22 November
Gilbert Islands - Another day of furious fighting on Betio Island, in Tarawa atoll. Aircraft, naval
guns and artillery hammer the Japanese pillboxes, and they fall one after another, but not until all the men
in them are dead, after blowing themselves up with hand-grenades held against their chests rather than be taken
prisoner. (The word 'surrender' does not exist in the army of the Rising Sun; and Japanese propaganda has often told
of the torture inflicted by the Americans on their prisoners.) The only fortified strongpoint on the islet of Bairiki
is destroyed by aircraft action. In the evening the attacking forces are reinforced, and there appears to be a slight
diminution in the strength of the Japanese fire. In fact, the defenders are running out of ammunition, and Rear Admiral
Shibasaki is cut off in a heavily fortified redoubt of reinforced concrete and unable to communicate with the rest of
his garrison. A desperate counter-attack by the Japanese during the night is driven off.
New Guinea - The australian 9th Division is still engaged in the operation for the capture of the Japanese
strongpoint of Sattelberg, north of Finschafen.

Status: offline 		Again a quiet turn, way too quiet. No sign of enemy invasion armadas and relatively few bombing runs.
Perhaps Andy is up to something really ambitious with his new carriers? Let's hope so, easiest way to get back at him...

23 November
Gilbert Islands - Tarawa and Makin atolls finally fall to the Americans, the defenders' ammunition is exhausted, their
forces almost exterminated. During the battle Japanese aircraft based on Nauru have attacked the American invasion fleet with
great courage, suffering heavy losses and achieving very small results, except for torpedo damage to the carrier Independence.
During the capture of Makin the Americans have lost only 64 dead and 154 wounded, the Japanese about 450 dead and 105 prisoners.
On Tarawa the the American losses are much greater, about 3500 killed and wounded; the Japanese have lost about 5000 killed, while
17 wounded have been captured and 129 Koreans have surrendered.
Bougainville - The 3rd Marine Division still faces determined resistance by the Japanese in the river Piva area.
The 1st Parachute Battalion of the Marines reaches the island.

Some 600 trained fighters in the Palaus' and Marianas' by now, half as many bombers and
400 KB ac. Got 96 trained fighter bombers ready as well, 48 Zekes and 48 Nicks. Should come in handy.

24 November
Gilbert Islands - A Japanese submarine torpedoes and sinks the American escort carrier Liscome Bay off Makin atoll. The
700 dead must be added to the price paid for the capture of Tarawa and Makin.
New Britain - Dring the night near Cape St George (New Britain), five Japanese destroyers en route for Buka Island
with reinforcements and materials are intercepted by five Allied destroyers. In the course of the battle the Japanese loose three
destroyers; the Allies suffer no damage. This is the last of the night battles that have characterized the Solomons Campaign.
Bougainville - In the river Piva sector the Marines drive off a Japanese attack. Work on the construction of
a runway is almost finished, and an aircraft manages to make an emergency landing there.

Status: offline 		I got a new plan for future anti shipping missions: Each trained naval attack group will be escorted by two green Oscar
formations (72 ac) and if possible - followed to the target by an army bomber unit. Larger strikes by 54 trained naval attack ac
will be escorted by 72 Oscars and 54 Zekes. The plan is to include one trained Zeke Daitai for these larget strikes.

These new formations will be refered to as 'Combat boxes' and are intended to drive at least a handful torpedo bombers
through a heavy enemy CAP;

Single Combat box - 27 trained naval bombers, 27 army bombers escorted by 72 untrained Oscar fighters.
Double Combat box - 54 trained naval bombers, 54 army bombers escorted by 72 untrained Oscar fighters and 54 Zekes (27 trained).

The challenge is to get the strikes to materialize! Going to put my fighters (land and carrier based) to 0 CAP and 100% escort or 90% CAP and range 0.
Has been very difficult to get enough fighters to follow the bombers to their targets and the results have been disastrous (loss of Hiryo and Soryo).

25 November
New Guinea - The Australian 9th Division finally concludes its long series of attacks by taking the Japanese strongpoing of Sattelberg, north of
Finschafen.
Formosa - The American 14th Air Force carries out a raid on the airport at Shinchiku, destroying 42 Japanese aircraft in combat or on the ground.

Status: offline 		I've created two double combat boxes in Palau and Guam. Another one will be kept in reserve behind the lines.
This will keep Ulithi screened from fast US carrier TFs. Got 300 crack fighters + KB there. Want to try out the
new tactics in practice soon. Has to be somewhere out of enemy heavy bomber range of course...and that means Andy has to come to be!

Rallying ships from Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and the Home Islands: want to gather a strike fleet
at Ulithi. Need more fast battleships and heavy cruisers.

Most of the bases in the Philippine Islands have now been assigned a construction unit and supplies. Give me 6 more months and the
place will be turned into one huge fortress. Preparing to release another combat formation from China, probably a brigade that will be split
and placed in Northern New Guinea.

Status: offline 		I disagree with your combat box tactic. You are trying to ensure leakers when your experience has already shown this to be futile against a full strength CAP. Plus you admit that you have had problems with escorts.

I think the way to go is to use a small number of expendable bombers (Sallys for instance) on day one and two of a US invasion with large numbers of fighters set to 50% CAP. For instance, at a base that could house 250 AC, have 200 of them as fighters, 27 bombers, and some search and ASW AC. The idea is to attack his fighters, not his ships. The bombers are only included in the mix to induce your fighters to fly escort missions which will attack his CAP. Meanwhile, your own 50% CAP setting is used to attack his escorts trying to bomb your bases. The idea is to atrit his carrier based fighters, whether over his ships or your own bases.

Once this attrition has taken its toll, THEN you move in your high experience naval bombers (Kates, Judy's, Vals, etc.) to the bases under attack or nearby bases. By weakening his CAP you will increase your chances of getting leakers.

Also, I would not engage the KB right away but save it to either pick off cripples or for the late stages of the battle when his CAP has been worn thin.

Status: offline 		I agree with Cap. The box thingie is very nice in theory but I don't see it working in game. You should try and engage his fighters that are flying escort missions. They will be just a tad bit more fatigued than those on CAP. As for Oscars on escort and the whole box idea, maybe you should just tone it down to include a single daitai and a 9 ac attack chutai. Your best results in getting hits came when flying small unescorted raids. So sacrifice some planes to get Hellcats fatigued and then hit them with crack fighters and only then go for the ships seriously.

Status: offline 		Think you misunderstood my intentions guys; the plan with the combat boxes is to prevent Andy from conducting hit and run missions with
his fast carriers. I will only get one chance to break through his CAP and I've never managed to send out enough fighters and bombers before.
The problem is to coordinate strikes from more than one base. With 2 or even 3 size 6 bases (Palau, Guam, Saipan) it is possible to assemble enough ac for several large strikes. If only one of the bases launch a strike it should be possible to penetrate the CAP..and if several coordinated strikes take off

All my 'valuable stuff' will be kept in Ulithi and guarded by 400 crack fighters.

When Andy decides to invade the Marianas or Philippines, he will have to stick around for quite some time and I will adhere to the tactics outlined by Cap & Gown.

Status: offline 		One thing to consider: I've never managed to send more than one large strike against
Allied carriers. What would happen if 3 arrived in a row? I would think that the CAP would
run out of ammo and slowly become less and less effective. Hm...could work!

Need creative problem solving at this stage of the war

Been all over the map looking for more construction units - ended up releasing 3 from front line
duties. Their slogan goes: Dig - dug - dug

Status: offline 		Today Andy landed squads in 8! Indian ports by subs....very funny! Now he know all my
defensive dispositions there and I have to rotate several garrisons. We agreed to allow a
very limited use of sub for scouting missions. Can't see this qualifying.

Doubt there is an invasion of India in progress, not enough Allied troops available yet.
Moving more search planes in but we should have spotted something if a large force moved from
Australia and towards India.

If I'm wrong I'll be happy to bog the Allies down, got large forces and solid fortifications in
place and 2000 ac can be moved in from China within a few days.

According to Andy he didn't get much out of yesterdays recon missions:

"My little recon backfired on me because I dont see the ground combat screen...
It was a little cheeky anyway so I guess I get what I deserve !!!!"

Even though he doesn't know which units are in the different bases he do have the exact numbers.
My guess is that the Allies will continue into the Marshalls and New Guinea: the question is whether
they're strong enough to launch another offensive from Australia!? Lots of ground units at Darwin.

Moved another 150 fighters and 50 bombers from Chian to the Philippines - starting to build reserves
for the DEI now. Found a big juicy aviation regiment in Kwantung that will be moved to Mindanao. This
will free 4 base force units and strenghten our offensive capabilities in the area.

More and more repaired fleet units are arriving at Ulithi: only one strong group left in the Home Islands
now.

Status: offline 		Last day of November...getting closer to 1944! That will be a decisive year no doubt.
Taking all the R&R I can get! Lots of reinforcements on their way including 3 fleet and 3 escort
carriers within 6 months. More importantly; I need new divisions and aviation regiments.

On Ulithi 48 Jacks have joined the 54 Georges. Avg exp is 62, not great but I don't want to train the
group since it's the only one I got. Let's see how good the Raiden is at shooting down enemy bombers.

It's time to move move naval bombers to the Home Islands as the enemy now got a large and powerful fast
carrier fleet. Going to need at least 300 fighters and 200 bombers in Tokyo.

Today heavy bombers hit Hollandia - had some fighters there to protect a couple of transport
groups. The Zekes didn't make much of an impression on the P-38s. Lost 18 ac in the air and
another 10 on the ground.

As you can see my carriers are in good shape, only the Hiyo needs another month or two in dock.
Most of the battleships are also combat ready but the last 7-8 points of system damage is really difficult to fix as usual.
Important to achive a max speed of 25 or more (max speed of 5 hexes). Half of my heavy cruisers are ready for action, all of the
Aoba's still need another month or two of dock time. The Katori and Kashii are slow training cruisers, so this leaves me with only
5 operational cl's. Can use the large Akitsuki destroyers (3500 tons) as flotilla leaders.

There are currently 35 operational destroyers at Ulithi, another 15-20 are on escort missions or in other ports while the remaining 10-15
are carrying out repairs.

The fleet is therefore combat ready (85%) but I prefer to keep it in port for another few months if possible.

Status: offline 		The Akizukis should be reserved as carrier escorts. They have(or atleast should have) the best or one of the best AAA ratings of IJN destroyers. Their 3.9DP guns aren't that good in surface combat and they only have four long lance tubes. Also they are worth more points than other dessies and losing them in surface combat is more likely.

3.9 DP cannot penetrate armor of Fletcher class DDs except for very short distances. But also in short-range combat those guns dont inflict much damage...

Status: offline 		I like the Akitsuki's, they land a lot of hits and can take a lot of damage. AA rating is 254 - this is 100 more
than most other types. So yes, they are my prefered carrier escorts, but the carriers stay in port most of the
year so occasionally they will receive other assignments.

Historically they fought in most of the Pacific campaigns from the Solomons and to the end of the war with distincion.
The 3.9" gun was calibre 60 - and it packs almost the same punch as a 5" in. At least it should have.

Andy needs a lot of destroyers Ken, lots of convoys, carriers and invasions to support. I only hope he shows
a little restraint in his use of PT boats when sufficient destroyers and escorts become available to him.

Otherwise I'm planning an offensive operation: will take some time to put it all together but if things stay quiet
I got a few ideas that shouldn't include too much risk....

Status: offline 		Doesn't seem like Andy got plans for a land offensive from Madang. He's very passive
all over the Pacific. Must be planning something big while receiving substantial reinforcements.

Almost 2 years since the war started...getting closer to the half way mark!

will remain behind to repair all sys damage: I NEED the four Kongo class ships in perfect running
order. 30 kt speed = 6 hex movement radius.

The Marshalls

My guess is that Andy will move into the Marshalls in force! He needs those bases to open the path into the Marianas!
I'm not going to poor more troops and ships in but air units will be moved into the ring of mutually supporting bases.
Should be quite a few opportunities to pick of stragglers and undefended ships.

The atolls themselves all have 9 forts, lots of supplies and good LCUs. My only wish is that they delay the Allies for as
long as possible. Evacuating a construction unit from Eniwetok right now. An aviation unit will follow suit since Kwajalein is
closed for business and will most likely remain so.

Status: offline 		Not much to report, nothing to do but wait for Andy's next invasion to begin.
The quezstion is how to react - but that depends on where he invades. Think patience
is important, no matter what he does we're going to let him wait!

Status: offline 		As I assumed Andy is going into the Marshalls in force! Said he's bringing a heavy hammer to
make sure to prevent another bogged down (Maloelap) operation. Probably a good idea...

I only got a single base force and LCU on most of the atolls (except for Kwajalein) but with 9
forts it's not an easy job to suppress them.

Only smaller units of Betties will attempt to hit the enemy from now on.

CAP cut down one small 5 ac strike and a slightly bigger one with 20 Oscars and 13 Bettys.
