I know that Oil and Resources can travel overland where it is drawn to thirsty HI.
Has anybody used this as a means of intermediate transport?

For example, I am thinking of having tankers short-haul oil from Sumatra and Borneo to Singapore. Assuming the rail line is clear, I plan to have tankers on the other end hauling oil from Port Arthur or, if it does not draw enough, from a coastal high HI city, doing a final short-haul to the Home Islands.

It seems to me that this would be a safer and more efficient transport system than running tankers back and forth direct from individual SRA ports to the Home Islands. Do oil/resource jump from base to base thus subjecting me to small base spoilage en route? Am I missing something here?

As plan number 2, I plan to have sea transports drop all SRA resources in Singapore (assuming its upgraded to level 10 port) and then having a well guarded "treasure fleet" run between Osaka and Singapore. Anybody tried this?

Good Luck Wooglin. In my game All of those areas you list after 1941 are listed as, Beware thar be Dragons.

I know that oil will move overland from Mandalay to Rangoon and I think there is some oil lost in transport, since I always seem to end up with an odd number of oil points in Rangoon after a transport. I think the overland movement occurs every three days. I am not sure how the rail net will know to move the oil to a terminal port, especially if there is no heavy industry. I have been playing the allied side. I have noticed that dumping oil into Darwin does not seem to result in it moving to Eastern Australia where there are HI that need it, so I think there is a limit on how far it will move as well.

From my short experience with the game so far I'd have to guess running giant convoys of TKs between SRA and Japan is the best way to go. Add several ASW destroyers to each convoy because those Allied subs are deadly. Small TF of three or four TKs each will be eaten alive by subs.

A transport limit might make sense. Like the 100 point movement value limitation for overland rebasing of airgroups. . . Any one notice, e.g. does Sidney suck oil from Perth (assuming Perth produces more Oil than it needs)?

My personnal tactic is to change convoy roads each time and have 2-3 giant convoys escorted by several ASW groups and CVE groups sialing before and with them. Each convoy will sail to a ressource base directly and empty it, then retire directly to Japan.

For example, the same convoy will sail to Palembang and the ressource center just SE of it. Nextt ime it will run to Rangoon & Singapore. Next time to Tarakan & Balikapan. Next time to Brunei & Miri. Then return to Palembang...

I haven't played since the release of the patch 1.21, but with the former patch I lost almost none of my transports in these convoys to subs and sink several of them.

Yes I think the mega-convoy is the way to go. Haven't quite worked out the details yet though ... :-)

Re Port Arthur - China & Manchuria are net consumers of oil so I would never take any oil away from this port.

According to my reckoning, ports outside the Home Islands that might benefit from occasional deposits of oil are: Singapore, Bangkok, Haiphong (for Hanoi), Hong Kong, Saigon (for South China), Tientsin (for North China), Port Arthur (for Manchuria) & Masan/Inch'on (for Korea). I'm not sure but it is possible that most of these areas are self-sufficient in resources. The Home Islands most definitely are not.

I think there is a limit on the number of hexes stuff can transferred by rail. My guess at this value (based on the supply rules) is 25 hexes, which might explain the "isolation" of Perth and Darwin. It would also put the kibosh on the "trans-Asia" oil shipments from Singapore to Port Arthur posited in the first post.

Is there any real reason for an Allied player to ship resources/oil? It seems the West Coast bases are always well supplied with oil and resources. Australian bases have a bunch of resources, but oil is scarce. The same goes for Karachi, Bombay, and Singapore. I have been hauling oil to Australia and occassionaly Indian bases from DEI with some of my surplus TK's, but I wonder if this is just a waste of time. Resources/oil are what it is all about for the Japanese, but will the Allies do just fine without any tinkering? Any/all comments appreciated.

What do people think about the Singapore hub system. Where ann oil/resources from SRA get dumped in Singapore level 10 port and then picked up and transferred via another TF to Home Islands, Formosa & etc.?

I use Manila more than Singapore. Oil/Resources from lower Borneo, DEI get placed there for collection. Larger convoys carry it to Japan or where it is needed.

I dump alot of oil/resource into Singapore, Taan. From Singapore the rail will carry alot to where it is needed. From Taan different convoys carry everything back to where it is needed.

Kind of depends on my opponent which method I use.

Only reason i use Taan also is it will not move my oil/resources. Some times my convoys are not quick enough to get to Singapore and it ships most of it out before they get there.

I think the hub system is a good idea. I would be careful to mix things up a bit though. A variety of routes to several destinations is probably a good idea. Also, a few very large convoys will be much easier to protect than many small ones. Fight the urge to run your economy "just in time". If you can manage to preserve a decent stockpile of oil, you will have more flexibility in your transportation arrangements. If you get in the position where you have to get it to Japan as fast as you possibly can, you will be that much more vulnerable to the allied submarine campaign against your economy.

Some of my opponents seem to enjoy placing subs around there. So I chose Taan instead to form up my HEAVILY escorted convoys. Of course now I will probably have to change that because of prying eyes.
