I thought in sharing this with my favourite window to the world. As far as I know we are living historical times, boys and girls: first time so many countries (how many are we, lost count..? ), all independent, all with different cultures and many different languages, all free willingly; all decided to go for a common currency. Forget about the motive, I'm interested in the experience. As in Portugal it have been a success so far in terms of acceptance. In terms of being used to it, well that is another matter. We have to convert things in our head all the time. It will really take us a long time before we really can accept a price without making a conversion in our head. And that is the problem: some people just don't want to look ignorant (or maybe they are too lazy) and they accept whatever value. We had a case here with a multinational Spanish store that was using converting calculators bought in Spain. Funny as it may seem it took a while before it was noticed that the conversion rates were wrong.... [ February 03, 2002: Message edited by: RichardTheFirst ]

The "independence" of the countries of Europe is now a thing of the past. THAT is the historical lesson to be learned for Americans as our President pushes us towards a similar "Free Trade" union of the western hemisphere. Take note of the Austrians, who changed their minds about being in the European Union, with it's heavy-handed centralized control. Even though a referendum vote was in favor of pulling out, their "leaders" said they weren't going to implement the will of the people. So much for freedom. More and more control of the United States internal affairs has been illegally given to supra-national organizations like the World Trade Organization. So instead of Congress making policy based on what's good for our country, decisions are made by unelected outsiders, the vast majority of whom come from bankrupt socialist regimes. Does anyone suppose they have our best interests at heart?

Warrior: this thread is about Europe and the Euro. Do you think all the world gravitates around America? Think again. And your opinion about the independence and the heavy-handed centralized control is just that: your opinion.

1) The entire world does revolve around America and what we do or don't do. 2) I never claimed it wasn't my opinion. Also, I'd love to visit Sweden, but can't imagine living anywhere it snows.

You're probably right, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to get on my soapbox.
