Hi folks, not really SPWAW related, but maybe someone can help that might have experienced this. Trying to play a PBEM with a fellow from the UK, but stupid Netscape keeps stripping the attached zip file!! The mailbox is empty, so it's not that, and several games with others went without a hitch!! Wrote the customer support, and get a nice reply to "try the automated troubleshooting", which doesn't even come close to having a situation like mine!! Has anyone else had this occur, and if you have, did you get it resolved, and how?! TIA

This might not be so helpful, but why not try Hotmail? It works for me.

Hey Warhorse, not sure if this will help (I hope it does give you insentive though). I spent I guess 2 years or more of dedicated slagging of Internet Explorer any version simply because I hate Bill Gates so much. I used Netscape just cause it wasnt IE. Finally one day after I was frustrated with Netscape for the umpteenth time for failing to even load correctly I broke down and let a friend help me switch to IE. Since then when I click on my icon for loading IE it amazingly actually loads. Always thought the load or not load thing was just my service provider being busy. So in a nutshell, using Netscape is your problem, Bill or no Bill at least IE works. Whatever other techy zone complaints there might be out there, I at least dont have complaints about the program running. And Netscape 6 hmmmmm just isnt words in the dictionary that are civilised that describe my feelings over that piece of garbage.

I hope I will be forgiven a bit of OT evangelizing: Both Netscape mail and Outlook are miserable mail clients. Try this brilliant product: http://www.pocomail.com/ It's *far* safer vis a vis viruses than Outlook, and far better engineered than any mail client that comes with a browser (even my beloved Opera). It's USD$25, but hey, you get what you pay for (except at Matrix!), and you paid *nothing* for NS mail/Outlook. I have no relation with the company (which is essentially one programmer in Victoria, BC) other than as a satisfied customer. Jeff

I doubt that it is netscape. Most ISP's have limits on file size. yahoo limits me to 1.5 megs with no more then 3 files. Hotmail has a smaller limit, 1,064 k bytes, I think. remamber, if either ISP has a 500,000 byte limit and your file is 500,001 bytes the file is dropped not truncked. I did have this problem with hotmail doing a 99x240 map with a full 400 units per side. As long as the replay (VCR) wasn't to big it worked. For the short term try sending the replay file as a seperate attachment, for the long term try opening a crawler account. They have a 2.4 meg file size limit(or had, I havn't been on crawler since I lost my password). Some browsers have a switch that enables attachments. I think the default is enabled, but you might want to do a help search on attachments.

Mike, Hotmail sucks big time, in my experience. You can get a free box at mail.com, which will also virus-scan automatically. Outlook Express is not Outlook, which has most of the problems you hear about concerning viruses. There are various fixes published for those weak security areas in each. Outlook Express works fine for me, and has for years, BUT, I also have a very good anti-virus program and firewall on my machine.

Well, got a Hotmail box, just for instances where my e-mail client does'nt play nice and work well with others!! Seems that with mostly folks from the UK, that this happens, strange.... Other zips are coming in fine on the other netscape accounts, just not this one fellow. I didn't change my e-mail in the profile, as I said, this will only be for the instances where I can't receive on netscape. Thanks all for the ideas, much appreciated!

Mike, perhaps you should ask these UK people what mailer they use.... I've had NS account for almost 2 years and yes, it has happened a few times that attachment was not included, but I always got it when I asked the sender to resend it...so I dunno in which end the error was. Voriax

I also was protesting Microsoft and really tried hard to avoid IE. Alas, I had so many problems with Netscape, I had to knuckle under and use IE.

Hey Mike: It may be worth a try, without changing your browser or mail server that you like, see my post on Limewire: Limewire Post I haven't had an opportunity to test this yet, as noone has replied that they are using it. I put a hundred or so color LBM's and an LBM viewer in my out going as a test. If you try it, and want to try a test, let me know when you're on, and we'll see if you can retrieve my stuff. I found that I had to set parental control otherwise the ammount of porn was distracting.

I guess when it comes to sending files there is just so many options. AOL for me is for instance a term denoting something rather impolite.
But I use their Instant Messenger (which is free, sure aint paying AOL anything for their software). It handles large files fine and can handle multiple files fine as well. Not sure but I think the person you are sending to has to be online at the time though.
Been told how AOL is the Thai hooker of the internet though. And is capable of crashing your system (although I have no techy means to verify that hysteria). As for security well I guess everything in a trade off (like armour or gun size or speed eh). I dont currently have my firewall in use nor an anti virus. Do I like that, hell no. But I also was never fond of those programs screwing up the performance of all my other programs. You can be assured though I wouldnt dip my hardware into a dangerous situation without proper protection
But fortunately my computer techy friend has given me a blanket promise to repair any harm done to me by any "nasties"
Thats cool with my computer of course. But then MY life isnt at risk if the computer gets a virus eh.

Hey Les: Having been involved with computers before the first "PC", first Apple, or first Z-80 based S-100 system. I have had the opportunity to know a few hackers. Not that I do this myself mind you. There seem to be a few basic premises: Any thing coded can and will be hacked, if the challenge is there. Which means that the tighter your system is (as it approaches Ft. Knox) the more challenging it is to hackers. If you keep one machine for use online, use another for personal finances, a novel, or code you are writing, those pictures of you and your girl, etc. And don't network the two. Don't save any account info and passwords on the net machine. Don't have anything there that you be upset about anyone seeing or stealing. Hackers typically are looking for large corporate or government sites, usaually just to prove that they can bust their security. If they hit on your system, with nothing of interest, they'll leave it intact. Honor among theives if you will. If on the other hand you put a ton of security on your system, and cause a hacker six months of work trying to get in, well, he might point out that your security has been broken by letting you start fresh with a clean HD.
