The game drops to desktop periodically (during the action phase).

I have WinXP Home with SP2. The game doesn't do it with my Win ME laptop so I am not sure what is going on. I am assuming it is a Windows related problem. I don't remember it doing it before the SP2 upgrade as well.

I've noticed this problem since installing SP2 on XP Pro. Disabling sound stops it for me.

Which version are you running? Have you tried either of the interim sound patches (check the Interim Sound Patch thread on this forum)? Are you getting any kind of crash message - are you hearing or seeing anything before it dumps you to the desktop?

Please post a dxdiag.txt file here - just do Start -> Run -> DxDiag and tell it to save its output to a file and post that in this thread. Thanks.

Regards,

- Erik

Here's my DxDiag. I'm running version 1.21 with the "interim sound patch". For me, the problem occurs when I press the "back" button from the ship availability list, but not repeatably. I get a black screen with the Windows dialog that says "WITP has encountered a serious problem" and asks me whether or not to send an error report. Other than that, I don't hear or see anything when this happens.

Hi,

Thanks for the additional info. Your DxDiag looks fine, so my next question is which scenario are you playing and what version did you start it in? Also, are you using the 22khz or 44khz Interim Sound Patch?

Regards,

- Erik

I'm running scenario 16, the December 8 campaign scenario. I believe that I started this game in version 1.20. I also think that I'm using the 22khz version of the interim sound patch. (Is there a way to check?)

Ok, if you started in 1.20 then that might be the problem. The 1.20 data files had problems that were only caught after release. We posted 1.21 one day after 1.20 to correct this as soon as we realized it. Could you please try starting a new game in 1.21 and seeing if it still happens for troubleshooting purposes?

Regards,

- Erik

Regarding the sound patch, if the file you downloaded and installed was about 10Mb, you have the 22khz version, which is the most compatible even with unusual cards and drivers but has some sound quality reduction. If you downloaded a sound patch that was about 50Mb, you have the 44khz version, which is still very compatible but has essentially no sound quality loss.

Regards,

- Erik

OK, I reinstalled the 22khz interim sound patch just to make sure, started a new game of scenario 16, played through a few turns and got the same error. I'll take another shot at finding a save that lets me reproduce it regularly, although I tried the same thing yesterday and wasn't able to do it.

It just drops to desktop, no warning, no error messages.

Here is my dxdiag file.

It doesn't do it all the time. In fact I played 3 hours (game goes great with football btw) with no problems.

Sometimes it does it, repeatedly, other times it doesn't.

Tom,

This is increasingly bizarre, so the problem continues with games started in 1.21 and with the interim sound patch? Can you send me one of your save files from a game that does eventually crash please? Just e-mail it to erikr@matrixgames.com.

Try using an application like EndItAll to shutdown all background processes, then start the game up and see if that helps. Another option is to try running it in a window by adding -w to the command line. I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here now though...

Regards,

- Erik

If it happens again I will.

I thought about some kind of problem with system RAM although I have over 1 gig of RAM on this box. My laptop runs with 256 megs and runs it fine, although it is slower than snot with it. Well, it isn't that bad but it is slower.

Erik,

This is akin to what Frag and I were discussing CTDs appearing first time for me AFTER 1.21 was installed. Happens when I click the back button but not repeatable as far as I can tell. Occurs frequently with Scenario 15 with not historical playing allies versus Jap AI when I try to give orders or change settings at a base or TF or airgroup. I did not have any problems witrh sound or CTDs before 1.21 so mine is not a sound related issue IMHO. There seems to be some tie in to whether the "clouds" toggle is off as well but this is pure speculation on my part. I am unable to even get to a save as it is first turn highjinx here but if I get through the first turn I may get a random CTD but not as frequent as during me giving orders before executing the first turn. Guess it doesn't like to take orders on Turn 1! LOL

Good luck on this one. I am unable to add anything substantive to trying to fix this one, just giving you more tidbits of information and seeing if there is something you can piece together from it all.

Similar. I am assuming scenerio 15 is the full blown WITP. I of course tried it with the US knowing about Pearl so I could try jumping the Japanese fleet (boy do those BBs have some lousy night capabilities-didn't hit squat).

As I said, it doesn't happen all the time, it generally will do it out of the blue during the action phase. Like Tally said, I don't get a chance to save because it does it for no apparent reason, just dumps to desktop. It only happens very rarely so I don't know if I will get a repeat of it. It doesn't seem to happen in WinMe with my laptop.

This really is the only major bug I have found with gameplay. I still occasionally get an intital 'my ship getting bombed' graphic during the action phase (one bombing phase of a ship will be done, switches to another air attack and the same ship intially will be a 'target' although it is never hit). This is a problem I had in UV as well so I suppose it is a crossover problem.

As I said, other than this I haven't had any problems. I am writing up the review for SimHq and I have to say I have never been more pleased with a game. I have owned Gary Grisby games from his Talonsoft days and I have always found them well worth the money.
