Very enjoyable read, and two day turns no less! (the only way to go for me in PBEM due to time contraints)

If you want another Allied guini pig Dude....i'll take a stab.

Maybe after I'm done playing with Zeta. One match is enough for me.

Well after spending the morning reading this thread, I must say I am very dismayed. Ever since the games release I’ve thought ground combat was too easy in this game, and this thread overwhelmingly confirms it.

China had been a stalemated slugfest for the Japanese for almost 5 years by the time this game starts, but dude has managed to capture almost the entire country in just a few months. If this doesn’t set off alarm bells in our community, I don’t know what else will.

Pearl Harbor fell after only a few weeks of fighting. Come on! There are multiple well entrenched divisions defending that island along with lots of smaller forces. No way it would only take a couple of weeks to clear, even if the US troops were green recruits, their sheer numbers would have required well over a month or more to clear. Given their preparedness and troop experience levels, that fight should have lasted for months.

Guadalcanal lasted 6 months! Okinawa lasted over 2 full months after the landings, and the allies had MASSIVE air and naval superiority. In this game the Japanese were getting mauled at PH, so no one can claim they had massive superiority. Iwo Jima lasted 6 weeks. Time and again I can point to historical invasions (on much smaller scales) that lasted twice to three times the length of engagements in this AAR.

Dude even stated his ground troops were almost as good as new and ready to be used elsewhere on the same turn the battle ended. If this doesn’t cry out for a redress by Matrix regarding the broken land combat engine, I don’t know what does.

I have no problem with the Japanese being able to achieve these kinds of successes, only it should take them months to see these campaigns come to a conclusion, not merely a few weeks. Additionally units should require 6-8 months or more for refits after such heavy engagements.

Personally I would like to see base capture ratios pushed from 2-1 up to 8-1. Additionally I think all Chinese ground units should start at full strength (just like the Japanese) and have their experience bumped up to the 50-60 range. They should also be redeployed along the entire front right up against all Japanese holdings. Japan found it almost impossible to move anywhere in China without getting surrounded, the deployments should reflect this threat.

Finally I think forts should take almost as long to reduce as they do to build!

Jim

"You would think a landing aganist good CD's in PH and Aukland would kill more troops than they have in the game."

Against an atoll that ought to be fairly true, but against large islands like Hawaii or NZ, the model is a compromise. Typically, large fixed CD forts were placed to protect the entrances to important harbors. So a bombardment force going in to bombard a base should have to withstand the full force of the CDs. However, an invasion 30 miles down the coast would be out of the range of the fixed CDs and only the mobile artillary would be able to shoot.

Now, if the game was modelling an invasion more accurately, a landing at some distance from a major base should take some time to organize and move against the base. Unfortunately, the land system in WitP doesn't model this - the model assumption is that the troops are immediately in place to assault the base.

So, with the current model, you get a bonus as the defender because your big guns can blast the incoming transports. However, the damage model for transports is such that they are actually fairly hard to sink - I suspect that the model is based upon how bulk transports tended to be fairly durable if there was nothing terribly flammable on board. (I remember reading about an iron ore freighter going to Russia via the northern route that got repeatedly bombed by the Luftwaffe, almost as target practice, but wouldn't sink because the Germans didn't have any air launched torpedoes that they could use at that distance, and the bombs couldn't do enough damage against what was effectively a cargo of rocks.)

Essentially, the only sure way to stop and invasion is to have some surface forces there to intercept the incoming fleet, and you haven't been in a position to do that very often. And unlike in Pacwar and UV, incoming invasion fleets in WitP don't get totally scared off and unwilling to try again when they run into a little surface fire from a PT boat - you need to have something that can shoot hard and take punishment.

The lesson here is that in WitP you need to be prepared to expend your surface forces against invasion TFs if you want to stop invasions.

Well that is hard to do since most got sunk on the first today's of the war. During beta and such everyone keep pointing out that is why there were almost no landings aganist places with fixed guns. I guess my beef is that CD guns are usless aganidst landings because they don't stop them at all. Yes they sink ships, but do not kill many troops. The Americans had a lot of problems aganist places like tawara and did face this much later than this attack. But I bet they would have taken a lot of death's if the Japanese contested more landings. The Allies I lot fire power in the moble art and machine guns. They have air search and are going to know where the landing is coming to move troops to be there when it lands. I think these places with would have been blood for the Japanese, they still may have taken them but I think there would have been a lot more deaths were ever they land by these major allied bases.

China is mostly an OOB and map issue. Plus they should probably increase the garrison requirement. This has been discussed before.

No, Pearl Harbor fell after a month. Plus they were pounded for two months with air attacks. The garrison was starved out more than fought out.

quote:

Guadalcanal lasted 6 months! Okinawa lasted over 2 full months after the landings, and the allies had MASSIVE air and naval superiority. In this game the Japanese were getting mauled at PH, so no one can claim they had massive superiority. Iwo Jima lasted 6 weeks. How long has New Zealand lasted? Chungking? Burma?

Personally I would like to see base capture ratios pushed from 2-1 up to 8-1.

That's ridiculus. Even increasing it to 3-1 will cause a lot of problems. 8-1 and the Japanese will never even take the PI or the DEI.

quote:

Finally I think forts should take almost as long to reduce as they do to build!

Think about it: if the engineers can build forts as fast as it takes to reduce them, you'll never get down to 0. As it is, I have to keep coming back over and over to keep Chungking at 0.

The "realism" of CD works both ways. At PH there is no reason to think the coastal guns will actually sink any transports. You can land several miles away from Pearl Harbor on an opposite shore where the guns don't reach. Plus once the invaders have a beachhead, they should be able to clear the area of coastal guns to allow resupply to occur without bother.

Would you guys like to provide a summary of ships sunk? Japan has lost a lot of carriers and the US looks like its lost a bundle as well.

I do like WiTP_Dude's theory of operations -- "The US will sink my carriers at will by 1943, so I may as well lose them now getting bases". Use them to stand toe-to-toe with the USA now when because a Japanese carrier won't be worth much later.

I do count myself with those who think the 1942 successes bode *VERY* ill for Japan in late '42 and 1943 though. The VP cost of conquest makes an auto-victory for Japan impossible and once the US takes back Mogami Harbor and a few more high VP bases, the Japanese VP numbers collapse (not to mention the land force losses that will be incurred as 70,000 out of supply Japanese soldiers are captured in New Pearl Harbour).

I disagree.

Japanese Carriers surely won't be able to win in '43 against Allies main CV TF. But none said Japan has to fight enemy crriers.

By the simple fact Japan keeps his carriers, it obliges the allies to commit their cv TF for any major landing and so limitng the numbers of operations allies can do in '43. and you pblige allied player to plan carefully. Japan CV TF + Tons of aircrafts at attacked base can be deadly if allied player makes mistakes.

In one PBEM (mariannas scenario) despite the huge advantage of CV allies have, i managed to sink 2 CV and 4 CVL with no loss so far. It means you can always exploit the mistakes of the opponent.

Oh, I agree with your interpretation. I just like the fact that WiTP has made a strategy based on an alternative belief about the utility of IJN carriers post-43. It makes for entertaining reading, but come 1943 and with no Japanese carriers in sight, the allies will isolate and take places in just the same way WiTP has been doing. However, when the Allies do it, they won't run out of carriers and the Japanese will be the ones losing lots of VPs.

The ability to damage the loaded cargo (including troops) when hit is on the wish list item. This would make CD defended areas even more dangerous to conduct amphib ops at, requiring more close escort (medium/heavy ship within the invasion TF) to counter the guns.

It will be interesting to see what happens if New Zealand falls and the japanese are able to bag another 100K+ allied troops. It seems like every free allied LCU is in New Zealand and if the allies lose all of them, then they will have a pretty serious shortage of LCUs, and will probably find it difficult to mount a counterattack in late '42 early '43. They might have all the planes & ships they need, but they may have relatively little infantry. When I play the allies, it's always infantry that is in the shortest supply by 1943.

I find this quite unusual - I never see artillary do so well, and not only that, the attacker is outnumbered. Usually that means that the attacker will have no effect at all. Did Zeta sneak a Russian artillary unit into there?

They have plenty of LCUs in Australia and the United States. What they lack are boats to ship them in and a navy to protect them.

The ability to damage the loaded cargo (including troops) when hit is on the wish list item. This would make CD defended areas even more dangerous to conduct amphib ops at, requiring more close escort (medium/heavy ship within the invasion TF) to counter the guns.

I predict that that change will not have as much of an effect as most people think, because the troops probably unload before the CD guns fire in the program. Even more so since troops already get "damaged" when their ship is hit. Perhaps if CD guns had two firing phases, one before the troops unload aimed at the ships and one after aimed at the troops (effectively an automatic Bombardment Attack).

You may be correct in that assumption as i was thinking the same thing myself. Testing will be needed for sure.

Yep, I really don't have many outside troops in NZ. Why, because I can get them there. I like how my dutch airfarce is doing. They are seeming to hold there own now aganist the Zero's. Maybe that is because of the low skill level of his pilots. I know he has some goods ones some where so do I, we both have lost some pilots. He has lost more, but I still can't take advantage of this because of lack of shipping to take to the offense. The day will come, but how much will I have to over come.

Yes, I think it should end around then. The key is to take New Zealand earlier before any reinforcements can be sent. If you can do that, you'll shut down the Allies for a good long while. They will be unable to send any reinforcements or supply anywhere because you'll sink them with land-based aircraft from Alaska to New Zealand.

Hi ,

Great AAR so far WITP and I really appreciate the red comment you put now in the combat report, make the reading far more enjoyable and easy.

Just one question: you make a second landing in NZ second port but you never actually fight there... even wen you have numerical advantage ... why ? Same at Soerabaya and other place: are you waiting for disruption to be gone each time ?

Also I noticed you quite never put even a CL in invasion transport TF, perhaps you could, they tend to suck up nicely the CD hits...

I need more reinforcements first. Many invasion TF have escorts. Doesn't show that in the reports.

And what did the Yorktown do down there? Did you forget that carrier??

Without control of New Zealand the Allies are able to sneak ships in. This is why you must control NZ early on. If you are going to try Hirohito style, I suggest sending a division immediately to take either Wellington or Auckland.
