That's sure is a freaking report, I am pretty sure it is Fox recorded if you look at the losses :p
Seriously did you any idea of the REAL damage your airforce took ? I was convinced that the FOW was affecting your pilots report about their kills... not your clercks accounts when they land at the bases...

Also it annoy me greatly to have combat report always displaying the "Star", make me wonder if they are not FOW-biased for USA...

You have to remember that there is only one Combat Report and it is viewed by both sides. So the FOW is applied to the claimed losses by both sides. To get the real losses you have to look at the Intelligence Screen (for totals) or check the individual units.

I think those stats show that the "Hirohito Strategy" is not so much Lawrence of Arabia as a Ulysses S. Grant war of attrition; not that I care one way or the other, just that it works differently in practice than it did as advertised. It does make for great reading though! In the long run that level of exchange can't bode well for Japan. The Pearl Harbor campaign went extremely well and that impressed me as I thought that it was not going to be the success the WiTP imagined. It was efficiently executed and the Japanese naval combat ships didn't suffer too many losses (no carriers lost at Pearl!!!).

Perhaps the naval aircraft losses was the long-run story of Pearl Harbor as the loss of all those skilled pilots in Hawaii made it difficult for the raw recruits to defend the carriers in the NZ camapign -- 2 CVs sunk, 2 CVLs and 2 CVEs. The IJN has lost 930 VPs in carriers alone in the New Zealand debacle and have about 100,000 low-on-supply troops tied down there. Even if they can win the land war, they are far from supply and the IJN has lost its ability to conduct offensive operations and provide air cover for transport runs to the far-flung bases like Mogami Harbor and (if taken) Auckland/Wellington.

The Commonwealth is still sitting tight in Malaysia, Burma and India. I suppose Zeta has been building his forts up to level 9 in that region and we've seen what trouble WiTP has with forts in China. Those carriers sunk off NZ would have been very helpful in the Indian Ocean, but now those weak RN carriers are probably most powerful units in that region. That should make India secure from seaborne invasion and make supply runs to Burma and Singapore easier.

I do think WiTP's big successes in China might lead to more successes in the land war in Asia -- I just don't have the experience with the land warfare model to say. But he seems to have pretty much gone as far as he can go with his naval power. He's shattered his fleet (4 CVs, 2 CVLs and 3 CVEs sunk) and will have to rely on LBA to do his work for him now. But he does have MH, which is better than it still being PH!

WiTP_Dude or Zeta: what do the Allied losses look like? I think 3 CVs (the fate of the Hornet was ambiguous from the AAR) and almost all of the non-British BBs, but it's been hard to keep track of.

Grant was underestimated a lot too... <g> (No, I don't want to get into a debate about US Civil War generals - thanks.)

We've all been saying that Dude has been taking some pretty hard losses, but he is now in September 42 in the game and there is still very little that Zeta can do. Dude can take those divisions out of the Phillipines now, move them into NZ and take it, First Marines or not. And he is right, once China is out of the way all of those now very experienced divisions can move (albeit slowly if they go by land) into Burma and India. And as we have seen everywhere in this game, level 9 forts don't mean anything more than a bump in the road.

I still haven't seen anyone suggest a good counter-strategy to prevent Dude or anyone else from doing this again, even with one day turns and even if there are no port attacks on the Phillipines or Singapore, as the "house rule" fans want. (Frankly, there is little of importance in Manila Harbor, and those Brit ships can be neutralized by land-base air easily enough.)

Let's face it - Dude has done the same sort of thing against a human opponent that most of us have done against the AI, but he has done it a lot faster. And I would expect that the next time that Dude tries this approach he won't throw away as many ships unnecessarily as he did this time.

I have noted a few key "lessons learned" from this AAR:

  • You need to be able to stop invasions before they happen, otherwise you won't stop them once they are on land
  • Fortifications are essentially worthless if you are outnumbered - you are better off not spending the time and supplies on them
  • Sinking transports does nothing unless there are troops on board at the time, because so many transport get built later
  • If Allied bombers can't get to bases that can reach Japanese forces, it really doesn't matter how many Allied bombers are around

  • This is basically true.

  • This is a not exactly true. Fortifications are very helpful. However they are not the end all and be all. Basically fortifications buy the defender time to bring in additional reinforcements. They do allow a smaller force to hold of an attacker for awhile. Though don't expect the fortifications to last for months once the enemy begins seriously attacking.

    quote:

  • Sinking transports does nothing unless there are troops on board at the time, because so many transport get built later

  • Yes, there are lots of transports. You can afford to lose many if it gets you more objectives.

    quote:

  • If Allied bombers can't get to bases that can reach Japanese forces, it really doesn't matter how many Allied bombers are around

  • Keeping the allies bottled up in North America is a big reason for taking PH and all the other Pacific islands. This is why New Zealand needs to be taken as well. Once you have the Alaska to NZ chain constructed, you have a good defensive line that can hold for awhile.

House rules or not, if the allied navy is substantially destroyed early on in the game the JP player can go anywhere he wants.

Playing with a house rule that says that the allied player cannot issue orders on turn one without some similar restriction on the JP player easily results in the destruction on the bulk of allied naval power on turn one leaving the allied player nearly powerless. Different house rules would require the JP player to outplay thier opponent in order to exceed historical results.

I've only just got the game, am playing against the AI - its not even 1942 yet - but playing the historical first turn with the Pearl Harbour sneak attack, if the AI stuck around, I dont think I'd be able to do anything.

After the sneak attack Pearl Harbour was almost a crater, morale in the 30s or lower, massive runway damage. Assuming WitP is like UV, a couple of battleships arent going to do much other than be targets if the IJN carriers stick around, and there sure isnt going to be a credible counterattack from Pearl. The LBA seemed very much neutralised at least in my game.

I've been bombing Jap ships out of Singapore for weeks incidentally with almost nil response, the RAF sucks!

In the new version, attacking Manila won't be as useful because the subs will already be at sea. So it's probably best to hit Pearl Harbor with everything you've got. The Repulse and POW will be sunk by Betties if they try to leave Singapore to move into the DEI.

I don't really think having the Allies totally stuck on round 1 is fair, given the Japs know the disposition of the Allied forces at the start of the game. I don't see it being particularly historical either, Pearl Harbour was a surprise attack, so I can understand having Pearl units stuck for the first turn to duplicate that, but I dont see why the Prince of Wales, for example, should be sunk in a surprise attack. The POW was sunk not due to a surprise but due to ignorance.

Isn't this also unfair? It's true the Japanese don't know the Allied disposition. However, the Allies don't know about the Betties. So not having the POW come out to be sunk by Betties is ahistorical as well.

Well, the Betties might not be there. I ran the POW/Repulse down Palembang way in my game, I suppose that could get it nabbed by Betties potentially, but its better than sending it on a suicide run to stop landings in Malaya, and its better than having them rot in Singapore.

Pearl Harbour was surprise. The US didnt make any tactical decisions there. Seems only fair the Japs can duplicate that.

The POW/Repulse was based on bad tactics. I'm not duplicating Churchill here, -I- choose the tactics, not Churchill. He had a go already.

Well, not having CAP or naval search flights could be considered a bad tactical decision. The British were also surprised by the effectiveness of the Betty. I doubt they would have sent their two best ships out if they knew they would be sunk so easily.

Well, whenever you make an atteck in WITP or move warships around you are never sure if they are going to arrive in one piece or not.

Point is, its your decision if you move them or not, though. I think Pearl Harbour and Pearl alone is a special case. No Pearl -> No USA in the war, after all. But everything else, is in the lap of the players.

You hanging around after Pearl is craterised isnt historical either, but you arent trying to duplicate Nagumo's every action. Same argument for Churchill.

Course, if you want to deliberately set up some alternative scenario than thats a bit different, if you are looking for what/ifs. But I think in general I can see the reasons for freezing the US BBs at Pearl for a turn, but not much else in the way of house rules. Unless its to stop potentially broken rules, like 15 DD ASW groups.
