Say does anyone have ideas where a good place to hold a tournament would be.

I'd vote for a Ladder site since there would already be a core nucleus of knowledgeable players.

Phoenix. In August.

It is so hot here the hotels and airlines offer super discounts! You can be in a great hotel, with all of the amenities, for less than $100 night.

Since we would spend most of our time indoors, who cares that its 123 degrees outside!

Just don't go outside... Besides, all of the tournaments are inside anyway!

Yeah.

Being on the West Coast emans most of the time the heat level is bearable.

But just a wee bit north of you there is winter 8-months of the year almost. In frozen cities like Chicago, Minneapolis, Toronto, Montreal, ...
In such climates who needs a refrigerator?

Hello DoubleDeuce. Great to see you. Actually no, no elimination what so ever. I was thinking along two lines.
One
-unassociated sequence of battles. featuring both at start forces and points in excess of startup forces in pick your own troops
-a tank leader competition. significant battles of WW2 for tank commanders. with ranks/ elan & cowardice points;

-->while others who choose to come and go or continue, also fighting for remaining spots. These spots benefit the aliases who take part in the follow-up competitions; they would allow those who achieved the varing ranks and privledges levels to start at that level in the follow-up competition. Hence a Sgt could progress through the ranks to kamfgruppe/task force command or be KIA'd - resulting in a restart to Sgt [as well there would be demotions back to member of the platoon; or if really bad down to a supply dump; then followed quickly by pferdewagon driver; and finally all the way down from tanker to Terrain Type Icon;] You might ask how can a terrain type icon get elan points to end up progressing back up thru the ranks to officer level: well there could be points for immob tanks; or tank kills on that terrain type etc.

-Now in keeping with traditions you would only get points from the current rank you have. As such a platoon member has only his own tank kills. The platoon tank commander has only his platoon's results and so on right up to the company level or higher; where-in only the units directly under your command get you elan points ..

-But as you know there is nothing more engrossing than playing battles that are tied-in to the results of other aliases and that require force conservation; where the battle's forces are theater of operations oriented ,,, say World War 3 Brigade Commands in SPMBT or Brigade Commands in WW2 .. plus others.

-Once the bat-gen becomes staid and the solitaire difficulty levels are overcome there is online/pbem but that too gradually weakens.

-Hence DoubleDeuces campaigns come to mind. As experience builds there are operational levels of play etc ..

other mini-battles or 2/3 day campaigns .. culminating in a very large battle where 20 or more players command battalions.

In the end I decided to satisfy once more the desire for theatre/war battles oriented play with minimal elimination:
A mini-campaign in MBT. if it works we can run a WAW race to Messina alongside; as well there is the Battle for the Falklands: Port Stanley that I am interested in playing out with experienced W-HQ aliases and neophytes.
that could be attempted in late 2005. It is more likely to be W-HQ suited as it has only infantry/air as major unit types [plus some shipping and amphibious]. But it is not tank rich; which is a tough battle force to make even for opposing sides as tank and crewmen vary quite considerably..

So although tanks are my preference it is clearly not the gaming industries favourite as it is largely unbalanced and tied to doctrine greatly. [stay out of PF range; do not move without spotters etc ..]; likewise for role-playing games.

In the end, it is a big step for newbies to become more than pbem bat-gen proficient. In essence some intermediate level of campaigning that builds on the solitaire skills of the New SP player is needed before the upper levels of say DoubleDeuce's campaigns can really be felt or experienced in a heads up sort of way. Single elimination competitions and competitions that don't reward aliases of varied preferences and abilites as well seem to attract too easily the less co-operative type of players.
Which makes sense, as there is very little co-operative play required in such elimination tournery's; which results in gamey play; and usually hostility. [to win I must get you..so I get you every turn right to the end..not exactly an instructive or interactive enviroment eh?!]

hopefully, the more experienced players will adjust to the dilute rules and freedom of battle-force selections so that both newbie and experienced can play together. in the end converting more SP players into playing the more restricted rules dependent types of campaigns that model real-life forces and their tactics/doctrine would be a boon to the more detail oriented games such as Double Deuce type campaigns..

In closing the mini-campaigns are in a sense a pawn-off of DD WHQ campaigns but also quite similar to SP campaigns. you need to select your force. Your force must last you to completion. The offense is enjoyed by one side unless conditions change. The better you do the more aggressively you can play. If you do really bad in one or two consecutive battles it is possible to be moved to a less demanding section of the front lines and to reduce your zone-of-control..

I'll wote for a hotell in Joutsa, Finnland, 61 degr. 40' N / 25 degr. 35' E. And in November. There is grey and dark outside probably snowing. With 100 dollars you get a small apartment, so you can take somebody with you at the same price.

The name of the Hotell is Joutsenlampi (The Swan Lake) although I did not see any swans there when I visited it recently.
