Hi everybody,

now i have problems with surface forces.
how can i send them to intercept an enemy taskforce?
the only use i have right now of them is to send them to bombard bases or to escort invasion forces.

but how can i tell them to intercept an enemy convoy when i now that he will be there?
i had let computer take dobadura and so he hast to resupply his forces there and i now the route the convoys has to take.
but i sink his ships only when i order to bombard the base.
and what is when i approximate know where his CVs will move during the night and i send 3 forces to intercept but nothing happens even if my surface force is in the same hex like the enemy cv.

thanx in advance

If you want your surface fleet to intercept enemy TF's, your surface combat TF has to be within one hex at least to engage them and you have to order your TF to react to enemy. You can also manage your surface combat fleet to arrive at the same time as the enemy TF once you know the base they are heading to, so you will be able to completely destroy those TF's.
Regarding the CV's TF's interception by a surface fleet, I have never been able to do that as when I have tried just to see that happens, my surface TF was not able to engage enemy CV's TF whereas it was located in the same hex. My surface TF was including BB's which were slower than enemy CV's: it could be one explanation for the unsuccessful engagement.
Unfortunately on the next turn their squadrons have heavily damaged my surface fleet; it is too risky to try to intercept enemy CV's for an unconsistent result. Maybe you can only try this option when you know that the enemy CV is badly damaged and you try to finish it off.

it happend often that my TF was next to an enemy TF and my TF didn't engaged.
i also never seen an enemy TF attaking one of my TF.

i'm now playing just for fun scen.17 as japanese and i'm trying some things just to see what will happen.
that's why i tried to catch an enemy CV-TF with my surface groups.
i put 3 TF in a row and 1 was in the same hex like the enemy TF but nothing happened.
"react to enemy" was enabled.
if this was true what you said at least 1 TF should had attaked because the enemy TF was surrounded and 1 TF was in the same hex as the enemy CV.
in none of my TF was a slow BB, only CA,CL and some DD

Only enemy Surface Combat TF will try to engage a combat against your surface TF. If you are trying to intercept enemy Transport TF's they will certainly attempt to avoid combat;that's probably why they did not engage your TF.
A surface TF with an aggressive or very aggressive commander could help.

In regards of the CV interception, don't forget that 1 hex is 50 or 60 miles lenght; so even if you are in the same hex your TF has to detect the enemy CV TF in order to engage the combat whereas the CV will absolutely try to flee avoiding such surface combat. Moreover it is very rare that your TF succeeds in this purpose even if both TF's are located in the same hex; it is quite historical.

Hi B,

Just to add to P's notes: it's VERY HARD in UV to get a surface force to engage while at sea. Mostly, just dumb luck. You'll find almost all engagements will happen in bases because both happen to be there doing something at the same time.
