Hi, just wondering. My advance forces arrived at at the southern tip of the Malay penisula with two weeks ago in (game time) and intended on bombing Singapore daily while the rest of the troops made their way forward. However, during the entire time, the whole penisula, ex-Singapore has been under thunderstorms. Singapore itself has been "partly cloudy" every day. I typically don't fly bombers during thunderstorms because of the high op losses, so there has been no softening.

Is this a bug in the game, an advantage given to the AI, or just the monsoon season?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but I know the feeling.

Back in my BTR days I had a slang term that I called the "Poofy-cloud defense." It never failed there would only be one of those poofy round clouds over Europe and it always seemed to be right over my primary target. Just luck of the draw really, but frustrating nonetheless.

Look at it psycologically - whenever the storms just happen to appear over several target areas, it will stick in your mind, because it's such a bummer. However, other turns that run smooth won't really give you a second thought. End result is, when the storms thwart your next planned assault, you're going to naturally remember the last time it did the same thing, but will probably not recall when it didn't.

That's the way I chose to look at the "Poofy-cloud Defense", anyway.

Actually it is the AI controlling it and what you're seeing is the representation of Monsoon season on the penninsula. Being a meteorologist myself by trade, I can tell you it'd be pretty tough to model the climate of the pacific accurately without creating a monster... However, when I discussed how it works with someone from Matrix, what they have is pretty good.

Just for giggles, try early year flying missions (aka Jan-Mar/April). Thats the time that the monsoon is less. See how it runs during those times.

Thunderstorms are generated when either side tries to accomplish anything.

They are also generated if a hex gets hammered by attacks too much.

The troops arrived outside Singapore on the 16th of December and the weather pattern did not change in Jahore Bhura (thunderstorms) and Singapore (partly cloudy) until January 11. On the 11th, the thunderstorms extended over the rest of the Pacific, except for areas east of PH.

The storms also cover China, Manchuria and the Home Islands. Does the game model typhoon? Should I expect convoys to be sunk?

At least Singapore is getting wet too, now.

If January is part of the "less" season, I'm not looking forward to July.
