Give me a WW II Sub Sim, There was one, I think Microprose put out that I played to death with my C-64, the name in my aged brain escapes me, you went hunting from allied bases in australia and other areas and hunted convoys with the occasional warships..

I KNOW the Name I just can't get past the memory block..

Modern sub sims never have grabbed me like WW-II based sub sims..

Silent Service is the name you are looking for.

IMO, the best games ever designed came out on the C64/128. They defined computer wargaming. I can not remember how many hours I wasted playing Silent Service, Gettysburg, Battles of Napoleon.

God, those were the days.

Silent Service I
Silent Hunter I
Silent Hunter II [played it once couldn't get into it, uninstalled it. [2 yrs ago]
Red Storm Rising
688I Hunter/Killer [Janes]
Fleet Command [Janes]
Sea Wolf
Pacific Air War
Task force 1942

Destroyer Command isn't that bad.

I have a 486/66 running Win 3.11, still play SS, SH, Red Storm etc.
Play 688 Atack Sub on a 586 with an Intel ODP 200 mhz processor.
Play Starflight, Starflight II, Sentinel World, Strike Fleet, Overlord etc on a 386 I think it's a 17 mhz machine.

Does anyone remember or liked Age Of Rifles

age of rifles, played it some... I must have hade 300+ titles dating back to the early 80's
silent service got lots of attention
I didn't see aces on your list.. aces of the deep was an excellent game, too bad they cannot upddate that one and re release it.. AI would pay for
A>>> a good interface,B>>> clean graphics.. doesn't have to be perfect, would like ati fog though!
C>>>> A really hard level and temperature gradients so hide and seek is a reality, silent runnint , super slow but with pumps .. below test etc...
D. and this is a must have.. a dynamic campaiegn as aopposed to a static campaign..
E>>>ability to start in any war year
Cool add on would be head to head convoy commander vs wolf pack
F>>> radio and wolf or group tactics
G allied air power ever increasing including cvl sub hunter groups as they where used historically
H>>> If you use you radio you get allies radio tracking interest and enemy asw assets start plotting and attacking you
I>> replenishment

I know many of these are slated for ss3 lets hope they work well!

"ships on the port quarter Captain, cannot make out type at this range, nor directions.. your orders sir?"
"stear 190 ahead flank"

Now that you mention it I really don't know why I never puchased Aces of the deep. I do remember looking at it way back in EB's or Babbages [dating myself]. I'll have to see if I can pick it some where. Al though I wasn't that crazy about Silent Hunter II.

Thats a good one, makes you want to change your name to Smith.

I got one for you, My mothers father was an Irish Catholic and my father's father was an Irish Protestant, made for some strange family get togethers.

Better get back to topic.

I hope they make Silent Hunter III a lot more diverse and cover both theaters of war.

I am a true american Heinz 57, mom's parents adopted her 80 years ago, and they where from the Rhinland... she was born here in the states... Dad's side is English, Irish and assorted other northern Euro.... I was never raised with racial predujuice, others but not racial.. so I was totally pidssed when I lived in Boston at the attitude I encountered especially by Irish americans directed at Cambodian refugees.. give me a break, 100 years ago our ancesters faced tough times and even in the US had to scratch their way up!
This is not to say all poeple of Irish ancestry are bigets... my favorate one was the girl at the office wearing ORANGE on St. Patties Day! Amazing...

Same for me in High school in NY, Long Island... My friends folks taught them all that master race ****.. what as@holes! Never really appreciated how bad it is in the states for blacks untill my mid twenties buddy, nice good looking Black guy told me about getting arrested coming home from the late shift at ups or fedex or wherever he was working!
I am not one of these liberal, money and social programs.. fixers either.. a true conservative .. just one with a heart, at least I hope so!

Lately, The last 5 years or so I reverted back to the old standards.

Wasn't to much out their for us old folks. Doom upset my stomach, screen moved too much

One of my machines has a dual floppy drive a 3 1/2 & 5 1/4.

I completly clean my older machines twice a year, trying to keep them around as long as I can

Age of Rifles!!!!!!!!! Did I hear the magic name?

If SSI published it, I either have it or had it. I still have most of them, but my computer will not run them no matter what I try.

I like Age Of Rifles a lot.

Did you try Dosbox, works fine on the old games I tried to run under XP only problem I found is game speed vs computer speed. Old games suck if played to fast.

Should have kept an old 386 or 486.

Find a local private computer repair guy on the corner get the parts and build one [They all have a junk room]. It's not junk though.

I still have my Dos 6.21 & 6.22 upgrade and Windows 3.11 disks.
Also, Win95 & Win95B
A few old Hard drives, Win 3.11 would format up to 1.2 gig if the boards Bios would accept the drive, if I remember right.
Two old 540 hard drives are just right.
I also have a box with extra computer power sources.

Dosbox is still available version 0.62-32win-installer.
Work pretty good on WinXP
The only game I couldn't get to work was Jane's Longbow, it needs smartdrv. Not in WinXp.

RickWhite, I must add that the Subsim community has modded SHII to the point that it is actually enjoyable. If you still have the game, visit http://207.44.164.159/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=1c426055c80b33c73adad331826a19b9 and try out some of the fantastic SHII mods before SHIII becomes available.

Just been over to Subsim, I didnt know there were that many others with SH2 & DC.

I'm going to register & log in.

Alot of threads and information, probly take half a day or more to digest all the information.

Maybe than I'll look at SH2 & DC in A different light.

I'll let you know.
