RUPD, the book for Starship troopers is far different from the movie. I was almost disgusted enough to walk out of the movie. The Book is not nearly the Authoritarian model the movie puts forth.

I have thought of being a History teacher since I was 8 or 9 years old. I went to college to major in History and environmental sciences (Geology and Oceanography) but ran out of money. I joined the USN and then got out in 1996. I haven't been back to school yet but I keep meaning to. I would love to teach, and I do tell good stories. I do not think I could handle to pay cut, nor the nearly work for free issue for an intern. The politics and such also drive me nuts. But, I keep coming back to it, and many of my Teacher friends think I would be good at it.

Also take a look at my Sig line as for my feelings on Heinlien eh tovarich?

TANSTAAFL!

Now I get the quote! Was just on the Netflix website and saw that they made a Starship Troopers 2. I guess the review will read "Hit rock bottom and just kept on digging"

There is also an animated series based on the book entitled "Roughnecks". It got better reviews so I may add it to my list.

Every good teacher needs some videos to keep the class occupied on the days you want to kick back. In the police academy I show Dirty Harry movies during use of force training and clips from the Blues Brothers during pursiut/emergency response training.

The one thing I will make all of my students do is read 1984 and Starship Troopers. 1984 shows how history can be rewritten and Starship Troopers is a great explaination of why we fight.

You will make a very interesting teacher - 1984 (a socialist diatribe against the sort of goverment the USA has today) & starhip Troopers ( a Nazi/Faschist goverment in action)

Can I be in your class?

I will likely get fired for expousing a form of Darwinism. Stupid people need to be removed from the gene pool before they are able to water it down to the point that we all think like the AI. If you don't know that the hot coffee will burn you or that packing peanuts can not be used as a flotaion device you should not be allowed to breed. You need a license for everything else today but not to have kids. Not a popular position in our politically correct world.

I am sure my students will say it was a great class until the teacher got fired or sent off to the reeducation camp.

Did you REALLY get that idea from READING Starship Troopers? The society it describes is pretty far away from National Socialism, much less faschism.

Eric Blair would have a lot of trouble with your characterization of his book, which was written long before "the sort of government the USA has today" evolved. I take particular exception to Heinlein's silly little tome being characterized as depicting a "Nazi/Faschist [sic] goverment [sic] in action."

Well of course he would. It was written well before current situations. I bet he would have a great deal to say about most so called 'democracies' that puport that status also. I don'n know where 'Heinlein's silly little tome ' came from as they are not my words. I have always regarded the book and his work dearly, although I do think Starship troopers has faschist overtones. (Blitzkrieg and extermination of an alien threat?)

Certainly agree about the theme of the extermination of an alien threat. However, I always considered that part to be straight American rather then fascist; consider the methods and results of the westward expansion beginning NLT 1680 (just one example, although Ben Franklin did not impllement his biological warfare proposal, he did carry it to the Pennsyhlvania Assembly as a serious proposal).

I spent $40K on a college education in the 80's and want to get my money's worth. I figure that "Espousing " cost me a few hundred $ to learn and I want to get my use out of it. I will also use "Paradigm" and "archetype" as much as possible. As you can see spelling was an extra cost so I never learned it well.

Some of my favorite teachers were my history teachers.

Had one in high school that was retired military. One tough cookie on tests, but was one of the more interesting and demanding teachers out there. Will always remember his WW2 test.

The other history teacher that I remember, was meticulous in his attention to details. He told us that he read the paper in the morning and underlined as he took notes so he would remember it better. He was also known for marrying a couple of his ex-students. HA!
